@glitch777 From the 3 main ingredients it's all up to you. I only ask that you keep the total grain bill under 17lbs. Let the creativity run wild my man.
yeah ok i'm in. i started writing a recipe already. but it'll be about2 weeks before i brew it. but yeah count me in. i love recipe formulation. guess i'd have to do a protein rest because of the wheat. maybe not though since it's only one pound.
I love these ideas of brewing challenges and experiments. I can't join in right now, but I'm going to try to be ready to start brewing again by May. Hopefully this one goes well and there will be continued interest in similar 'expiriments' in coming months... Good Luck to all, can't wait to see how these turn out...
I'm going to be doing Jamison's challenge. I was going to brew that up next weekend. As soon as that is out of primary I could brew up this recipe (I'm thinking in about three to four weeks would be doable).
I'd love to join everyone for an ooVoo beer and discussion...I hope my cheat tables help out anyone trying to do the conversion so the liquid or DME base is equal the all grain recipe mentioned by sjporr
Perhaps there should be an upper limit of the grain bill...say no more than 17lbs...this will give a gravity of about 1.078 anything higher and a starter would definitely be needed and some folks might not have ability to do that.
an extra 3 lbs of grain would equal an approximate additional gravity of 1.014
@immolateus Very good point, yes lets put a cap on the grain bill. 17 lbs is alot and will make a great cap. Thanks for putting the break down conversion in here as well. That will help. This is going to be great.
@immolateus I have brew tons of beers with out a starter ( actually all my beers) If i've got a big beer i'll just pitch 2 WYEAST pacs in it. I did a Wheatwine that was 12.5% with 1 packet of wyeast high gravity american ale that was a VSS and it kicked ass.
@dorf68 i've dont that too....did it in my Chocolate Oatmeal stout vid I think....anyway...I thought in the spirit of "homebrewers everywhere", perhaps 17lbs wouldn't mess up a new brewer or someone on a budget
@dorf68 I'm using the calculator at powerbrewery dotcom...I am guessing that extracts probably have a range so it probably depends on the manufacturer....what conversions do you have...post em so folks can have a few examples to work from.
SJ...definitely interested in doing this if we can start it in the next few weeks...I'm moving in about 2 months so don't want to brew too late....let me know what the official base ingredients are so i can order them online. cheers.
@HokieHomeBrew Sure go ahead and order. I'm going to start to build mine as well. Make sure there is video of you brewing too to share with the rest of us.
Not sure if it's too late to join in, but I'm up for this. Haven't decided what I want to brew yet, but it sounds fun. Cheers!

ok now its 12lb 2 row. 1lb crystal 60l. 1lb wheat. and then does it have to be an additional 2 lbs of whatever other grain?

@immolateus A oovoo session would be fantastic. We should try to work that out.

an extra 3 lbs of grain would equal an approximate additional gravity of 1.014
this would equal
2.5lbs of liquid pale extract (1.015)
or 2lbs of light DME (1.014)

@immolateus I thought you were talking about a yeast starter, my bad

@dorf68 I was...I was saying anything over 1.8 would need one...anything under and you probably be OK

Here is a cheat sheet for the conversions based on a 5 gallon batch
12lbs of American 2-row = approximate gravity of 1.055
7.5lbs of Light DME = approximate gravity of 1.054
9lbs of Pale liquid extract = approximate gravity of 1.053
1lb of wheat malt = approximate gravity of 1.005
3/4lb of wheat dry extract = approximate gravity of 1.005
0.8lb of liquid wheat extract = approximate gravity of 1.005
Crystal 60 (same for everyone) = approximate gravity of 1.004
base OG is approximately 1.064
immolateus 1 year ago
@immolateus I gotta say your extract numbers are off. 7.5 pounds would be pushing 1.070 in my book

@immolateus I use brew calculus on the web. I didn't do that exact amount but 7 lbs of liquid came out to 1.060

So, according to the names you listed, it was the highest rent Homebrew room ever seen on ooVoo. Excellent.
