Hi... If you buy D90 and D5100 with 18-105 VR kit, it costs almost the same, maybe a $100 difference. Which camera would you suggest, when I am all into shooting stills and no videos at all?
@robertlam18 - Sony makes excellent sensors, as demonstrated by the Nikon D7000, Pentax K-5, and Sony A580, all of which use the same sensor as the Nikon D5100 which is the BEST crop sensor on the market today.
Would you recommend this camera over the Nikon D7000? I am getting one in about 2 weeks and want to get the best cam within my budget. Knowing that the sensors on both these cameras are the same, this has better video over the Nikon D7000 so would it make it better than the other? Can't wait for a full on head to head comparison between the two.
at 4:14 you mentioned the Nikon D800. Do you have any news when it will be released? I am looking forward to buy the D700 and now I am wondering now if I shall wait for the D800. Any thoughts on that?
@amirza1981 - I'm hoping/thinking we should hear something in the summer. Of course, the thought occurred to me that perhaps the Japan disaster has set Nikon back on their release schedule for the D800. Let's hope not.
Hey I wana get a couple of these cameras for streaming purposes. Can I connect it to the computer through hdmi and stream online with it?....would the menu pop up and be in the way? and what resolutions can I do that with?...
@Tavor21Actual - Nikon has better white balance and color consistency in their video. I also prefer the smaller file sizes. The Nikon is also better for photography as it has a better sensor, better image quality, and better AF.
@Tavor21Actual thats weird as when i was in jessops store (uk). the canon 60d out performed the nikon 5100 and the 7000 as my mate is looking to get into video. He brought the 60d as we agreeded that the canon looked better in performance.
Can you post some good movies with your good lenses. The video samples ive seen have been mostly terrible. The video from my Sony NEX5 is better.
Also, the video mode still doesnt have audio gain control, shutter control, and the codec it uses is not very good (and its low bitrate). So, Canon is still much better in video.
@JogBird - I record to an external mic (Zoom H2) almost all the time, so the audio gain control is a non-issue for me. The Canon codec is a higher bitrate, but I actually prefer Nikon's for the smaller file size. Unless you're making a Blu-Ray disc, you'll never notice the quality difference. Nikon has better color and white balance for video.
Hey you didn't answer my question yet. If you strip both cameras the D7000 and the D5100 down to it's sensors only, will the image quality/noise performance/etc be the same? Thus making both camera equal image wise?
Exciting day at artoftheimage when you returned it also. :)

Funny a big camera leader company has to use sensor from Sony which is a sub par camera company in the past.

Problem is it is not as big as the 60D so if you want a balance camera then still one have to get the 60D.
robertlam18 10 months ago
@robertlam18 - The D5100 isn't aimed to be a competitor to the Canon 60D. It's aimed at the Canon T3i level which is approx the same size.

i want to shoot short films with dslrs, should i choose d5100 or canon 600d? please help me
bennybeibe 10 months ago
@bennybeibe - Canon 600D, no question. The Nikon D5100 is crippled when it comes to video.

I'm on D5100 number 4 with the first 3 having Hot Red Pixels showing up on the final images.
This 4th camera has one small purple hot pixel that is hardly noticeable.
Any hot pixels on you D5100?

how would you compare the d5100 to the canon t2i or t3i (since theyre pretty much the same thing)?
BradmanIII 10 months ago
I put hands on a D5100 and it felt really cheap. Small, plastic-y, button placement felt strange. Like the hat.

looks small for your hands

I'm thinking to get the 3100 for my youtube reviews. Should i get this or the 3100? i currently have the d70 and a few prime and zoom lenses.
akmalrosli 10 months ago
@akmalrosli Definitely get the d5100, the swivel screen is a must have for video. And, its got the mic jack.
JogBird 10 months ago
@akmalrosli - What @JobBird said... D5100 for sure.
ArtoftheImage 10 months ago
@akmalrosli Depends upon your budget.

Nice. I'm thinking of getting one to pair up with my D7000 too. Something for the wife as well.
Hope to see your take on it too.

bpmuzik808 10 months ago
@bpmuzik808 - Yes, I expect the image quality to be equal between the D7000 and the D5100. DXOMarks appears to back this up as well.

@ArtoftheImage This makes me a little sad inside :( lol. Oh well.

d5100..... the perfect prime camera?
Basicccc123456 10 months ago
@Basicccc123456 - Possibly... more so than the Nikon D3100. :-) Problem remains that you need AF-S lenses to use AF.
