I saw the match tousand of times and, for my point of view, Germany did deserve the victory, but Germany definitly did not deserve the gift of the referee.
Argentina won two world cups in its history and they were won without any help of the referee; without any doubt about its superiority.
The FIFA 1990 World Cup will always be remembered for the doubious penalty on its final match.
Argentina played a defensive game because, in the semifinal (vs. Italy), several players were suspended for cards, which will unbalance the game Offensive (Maradona could not alone, for his injury), and had no alternative but to defend to get to draw and use the only weapon he had left: a visionary who was stopping Goycochea many penalties.
If the referee did not invent this penalty, perhaps the story would have been another...

@ewar1983 No, Brehme took free kicks, except PK's, with his left foot always. His left leg is stronger. His right is more accurate. He takes PK's with right unless his right foot is sore or injured. Same with Mexico game. He used his left for a free kick then. It was not a PK. Note the difference.

A esa final la jugamos con 6 jugadores con lesiones y sin embargo eso no lo sabe todo el mundo. También en 5 o 6 partidos de los 7 del mundial hubo una silvatina impresionante al himno argentino, eramos completamente visitantes. En la única ciudad que no silvaron fue en Napoles gracias a Maradona.

Great diving from West Germany. Let's not forget Klinsmann, whose theatrics reduced Argentina to 10 men.
But after the "Hand of God" goal maybe Argentina had it coming. Germany would get their due in 2010, as Spain dived past them in the semifinals.

@Wilsontk Sí, yo no dije que el camino haya sido bueno para la Argentina. Fue un total sufrimiento y es por eso que lo remarco. Teníamos tiempos extra encima, por lo tanto el cansancio era mayor. A esa final la jugamos con 6 jugadores con lesiones y sin embargo eso no lo sabe todo el mundo. También en 5 o 6 partidos de los 7 del mundial hubo una silvatina impresionante al himno argentino, eramos completamente visitantes. En la única ciudad que no silvaron fue en Napoles gracias a Maradona.

You get the most important thing about that final - the thing that so many people don`t want (not that they can`t -simply don`t want) to understand: Germany was the team that totally ruled the game, while Argentina was just defending with 11 men in their half making the time go by and wait for the penalties.
Until Argentina` 1990 there was no other team that hadn`t done at least one decent attack against oponent`s goal in a world cup final - and then they blame everything on the penalty ?!?

You know very little. Coming into this game Argentina had injuries/suspensions. They knew they could not beat this German side. There only hope was pens. Whilst it may seem negative to you. The only thing that would have mattered to these players and the nation of Argentina was a victory.

even though argentina possessed less overall skill than germany...if they have had their four suspended players plus cannigia in the final they would have beaten germany....they would have used the same tactic they used to beat brazil and italy...wear the opponent down and score on a counterattack or set play

bueno,pues creo que no fue penalty y como mexicano que soy la neta es que nuestro arbitro la cago y gacho,pero ahora que si pensamos que hubiese seguido el partido ,en tiempos extras hubiera estado igual y en penalty,argentina tenia al mitico portero goycochea y alemania a illgner, y ambos equipos tenian muy buenos tiradores,pero no es por que me caigan mal los argentinos pero creo que aun asi hubiese ganado alemania.
