this bike is amazing great mpg and its top speed is not much higher than the speed limit its just about fast enough to get the job done so no speeding tickets :)
@Skel3tor1 Cool bike. I am either thinking of this one or the Kawasaki 250SF. I really like the digital dash on the Kawasaki. I don't want a bigger cc bike. 80-85mph good enough for me! :)
80 is not fun on a Honda Rebel, because its so light and any little gust of wind blows you around... esp. not on I-20 on the South Carolina side entering Augusta... at night... that stretch of I-20 is pothole and crack city. Still, if you have experience driving a Ninja bike at much faster speeds, you won't be phased by it at all. I just don't have any Ninja or super bike experience, so 80 on a light bike is scary for me. But you don't buy a Rebel for top speed, you buy it for 60mpg, mofos!
If you stay in the right hand lane with the trucks and people entering and exiting, you might be OK, but the Rebel sounds like it is ready to fall apart. It vibrates too. It is made to go about 60 comfortably. It will not go anything close to 80 mph. It will go an indicated 70 which is really 65 mph....too slow for the interstate. With any hill, you will slow down to 55 mph. Not an interstate commuter, but one or two exits on the interstate? Sure.
I'm 6'6" and a very big guy i just got a rebel, its in the shop getting a tune up and full service, new tires etc... but driving it home I had it at almost 60 with plenty of power to spare so this engine has got some moxy thats for sure.
sure you can drive it on the interstate, but the motor wont last 100 miles at that speed. I've got a nighthawk 250 (exactly the same as the rebel) and anything over 60 feels like the motors gonna blow.
Despite what it sounds like, the nighthawk and rebel's 234cc engine is legendary in the reliability department, one guy on the rebel forum has been through a few engines, and even running it at 75 mph all the time he gets a good 80-90,000 miles before it's toast. I'd recommend keeping it at 65 or below though, and you'll easily get 150,000+ miles.
@4WDslashRC You should really start off on a 250 and get the feel of it. The Ninja 250 can actually keep up with a lot of the other 600s on the road, amazing bike.
@Touchcoma, I understand all of that, what I take issue with is that the new 250 sportbikes are being called "super bikes." Super bikes? For real? And as far as the 250 cruiser is a 250 cruiser comment, this I understand. Tell me I'm wrong, when I say, the std. 250 2 strokes from 30 years ago, were much quicker, faster, more efficient, so much easier to work on and cheaper to fix and operate and yet people scream about how advanced the new 250 4 strokes are and this isn't seen as ridiculous?
Wow, how far have we fallen? I thought technology was supposed to advance us as a motorcycle society. Case in point, a 1980 Suzuki GT 250 in stock form, would hit a hair over 100 mph, it would get 53 mpg and run the 1/4 mile in 15 seconds. It NEVER needed a filter change, valve adjustment, camchain adjustment and would go over 50k miles before it needed anything. It would smoke ANY 250 4 stroke street bike and cost less than a grand when new. Does the Rebel or any new 4 str. seem advanced now?
@Revanche2strokes there are advancements but in the sport bike world, as for cruisers the general consensus is that it doesnt need to be upgraded cuz a 250 cruiser is a 250 cruiser if you want more power than buy a bigger bike. the kawasaki 250 on the other hand would smoke a honda rebel. so i guess it comes down to preference
Great motorcycle! I have a Rebel 250cc too. Have you ever noticed that car designs change every coupla years or so like shitty ipods and mp3s but motorcycles still hold to their true form and shape since the late 1800s? I never drive tin cans and never will. For me it will always be a motorcycle, cruiser or chopper.
@XBOX360BLUE Full face helmet for sure. I remember reading some statistics from a study done about 30 years ago that ruled some number around 13% of impacts occr on the jaw/chin area.
I just bought a 2006 used rebel with 10kmiles on it. I got it up to 88mph. I dont know what you all are talking about, this bike has pleeeenty of power for the interstate...
@XBOX360BLUE Recommend you take a SMART motorcycle course. They will train you using Rebel 250's and Interceptor 125's. After that I would recommend you buy at least a 750. this video is very helpful but i just had afew questions, i am 16 years old and am looking for my first bike. i have been on bikes since i was very young (dirtbikes, etc) and have riden other peoples motorcycles such as my fathers harley davidson and uncles yamaha r1 etc. so a 250 is a pretty big step down from those things and i was wanting your thoughts, is the rebel a good first bike? it would be a daily driver and just for work, school, and of course going out... would this bike b good?
I just bought a 2009 Rebel from Conyers 2 months ago. Top speed is only 76mph then it drops to 65-70. What's up with my bike? Did I get a dud or have you added new sprockets? I just take the slower roads around Augusta
@travisalive It would've been funny if he got pulled over, and the camera caught him being put in handcuffs, and him being spread out over the hood of the police car.
I just bought me a 2000 Honda Rebel , i payed $1100 for it with only 5000 miles!! I love it, it runs great and smooth and get 65-70 MPG!! haha i got mine up to 85 but i dont really like holding it there. overall GREAT bike
i have a nighthawk 450 from 1982. 6 speed. i lose speed in sixth but 5th can get me up to 110. sixth is for cruiseing only. your engine is probably almost redline
hey skel3tor1 i just bought a rebel today what kind of windsheild is that? plus people tell me i shouldn't ride on the interstate because of semi trucks sucking me in while I'm next to them any advice?
I just bought an '04 a couple weeks ago...it's the first bike I've been on in twenty years. I am quite impressed with it...I got it for $1800.00..and it had just over 600 miles on it...still looks brand new!
At first I thought I'd ride this for a while ..til I got used to riding again,..and get a bigger bike. But now I think I'll just keep this one til it dies.
A guy in auto shop back in high school had one of these. Cool little bikes, I almost bought it off the same guy for $2000. It was an '85 Rebel if I remember.
Awesome video. I always wondered how it would look from the drivers seat since I've never rode a bike before. Looks scary as hell. So I'm getting one for myself.
That's pretty impressive. My wife has a GZ250 that I've ridden on the highway and gotten it up to about 70. At that speed, it sounds like the engine is going to explode, so I don't like it for the interstate. :-D
i was thinking about getting one of these as a first bike... but idk. I think i'll just save my money and get an 883 sportster. This doesnt look fast enough for me. I'll be commuting on an interstate to college almost daily...
@pedersonaa I would not recommend a 883 for a first bike. Don't get me wrong it's a great bike but its just a lot to handle for a beginner you want something easy to maneuver not something so bulky. 250 may be a bit slow but I would find a good used bike between 250-500cc even a 600. The reason Harley sells such big bikes is because that is where the money is for them. They really aren't the best starter bikes
Does anyone know if it's a problem with a rebel whenbi first start up the bike it's hard to turn the throttle and will jerk me forward to start, but when warmed up good it rides forward with little torque
This won't fly on the expressway where I live. The right lane goes 70mph, and the leftmost lanes are doing 85mph. You need the ability to escape stupid drivers.
I have an 04..and I'm 6' 1" and 198 lbs and it does great.a little struggling with a passenger but lift the shocks to 5 and it handles them ok...as long as they're not over 160 lbs...lol
It is a smaller bike but a lot of fun and easy to handle great gas mileage.80mpg
As far as comforI wouldn't want to ride it across the country...but it's great for short trips or around town.
I average about two hours on it a day. But if I could ..I'd spend four hours riding a day....Love this little critter.
I just happened to watch your video with the Rebel 250. I'm going to be a new rider and since I live on a mountain and there are areas on the road that are pretty steep. I was wondering if this bike could bring a person weighing 180 lbs up the hill with the speed limit is 40 mph. thank you
This bike was targeted for teenagers in 1985 ... back then us teens weighed around 150 lbs. Motorcyclist /Sept 1985: "If you watch MTV, you have seen commercials for the Honda ... A young couple rides the bike, while the catchy tune "Riding on a Rebel" plays ... Honda is not marketing this motorcycle as a woman's bike ...."
I cant even get my 03 honda rebel to get up to 80. it tips at 75, then i slip it into 5th and it loses its pull and levels at about 60-65 tops in 5th gear. but in 4th, it levels around 65-70.
What kind of sprockets did you use Skel3tor1 on the highway? Did you use the regular factory installed ones?I had to get my sprockets with o rings and chains paid for today, but will not be in til tuesday, and it seems like mine does not do good on the highway.I have a 2005 Honda Rebel, and it is a definate durable bike, but it has died on me when I reach stoplights.Do you recommend o rings with the sprockets for long distance rides? What do you get as far as gas mileage on yours before fill up?
I never liked taking my rebel on the interstate .... i mean top speed is like 75 so its kinda pushin the bikes limits ..... for me atleast i had a 250 that was my beginner bike ..
@PsychoholicMaggot You really should have a windshield if you plan to ride without safety gear. But when you have gloves, helmet, boots, pants on you really don't feel any difference with or without the shield. Got my Yamaha v-star 250 without one, does not make a difference at all! Performance wise, it will slow you down a bit if your planning on a 250 cc.
@DuBois994 Yes. If you are under 7ft; you should be good =D Weight does not really matter too much. You should not notice even the slightest performance change until 200lb payload.
@mujjuman Because it is a 250, you may not have enough power to keep up with traffic on highways with 75 mph limit; we all know people go 85 on those. In that case, it is necessary to "floor it" to keep up with traffic. The bike is very good at accelerating, so that is not really an issue.
Excellent video, it was the reason I started riding my 250 Rebel to work few times a week to save on gas - it really does 75-80mph easily. Thanks for the great post!

I like the pilots view! I click the full screen mode and I'm in the drivers seat! My interest in the Honda Rebel 250 led me here. Great bike... Great Video! Thanks, Skel3tor1!
I used to have a blue '85 Rebel and rode it back and forth to work during the summer about 12 years ago. Was a joy to ride, but IMHO It's better to take on back roads. Mostly because when you max out the speed you are really working that bike hard. I rode it mostly on I59 in AL to Irondale. I hated the day I had to sell it =o(
Took awhile to find this vid I'll subscribe, just got a dragstar 250 pick it up in a few days hope its as good as the rebel, its my second bike for work.
So, I asked the question on rebel250(dot)com but I am still not sure about it.
I am looking at taking a 600-700 mile trip on my rebel. Aside from my butt going numb, can the rebel stand up to 75-80mph for an extended amount of time?
@Basstorius333 Yes. It is built by Honda. These little cruisers are BUILT for long distance. I have one (hence why I am answering so many questions on this vid) You will be okay man! =D
ive been considering a rebel 250.. or any 250cc class honda.. ive learned on a nighthawk 250. i know that this engine is pretty small and lacks real power but i cant see myself going beyond 85mph.. i never do in my car even on the interstate. i found a few rebels used in my area for $1000 to $2000. and im looking to pay cash, and they seem worth it. great video btw.
@RedirXTV And you can actually buy aftermarket sprockets for this bike that allows it to cruise at higher speeds at lower RPM. The trade off is you lose a little acceleration from take off, but if you're looking for fast, you need to consider a different bike. The loss in acceleration is very minimal though. The Rebel is great at what it was made for, short hops around town and the occasional cruise out through the country side. They're fun, very economical, and very reliable.
You're going to experience much more fatigue on a Rebel doing 80 as opposed to a larger displacement motorcycle. The high rpm's on the Rebel transfer vibration through the bars, footpegs, and seat right up through your body. It's like riding a blender. It's a fantastic beginner bike for in town commutes, but I would stay off the highway for the long haul.
@mahmahmonkey ... well, I ride a R1 in the summer on the back road and when its not rainning and I commute on the interstate with my 02 rebel everyday 30-35 one way. it does just fine for me and I think its more comfortable than the R1.

pretty much gonna get a honda rebel now. i was thinking about a bigger motor bike. but since ive seen this video, im gonna start looking for a REBEL! very inspirational my friend!
Great vid! I'm looking for my first bike, and was considering the Rebel, but was concerned about Interstate usage. Though I-10 does have the dubious reputation as one of the most deadly highways in the country between Tucson and Phoenix, and I live in the former traveling to the latter frequently. So I think I might stick to SRs but who knows? I also have a 34" inseam, so we'll see how well I fit.
real nice man. I've always had a honda rebel in mind and wondered how it rode. So what's the safe speed that you can maintain so that the engine won't burn or something?
i just got my first bike yesterday, its a honda rebel. i was wondering, i have about a 30 minute ride to work. will i be ok going on the freeway for so long? in other words i wont be like red lining it? :P
@davidallenroth i have a honda elite scooter 250 same size engine as the honda rebel both are very good bikes and are both excelente to learn on if u want looks and a chick magnet go with the rebel any more questions id be happy to help u with :)
@neatpleats I have a dual sport, and I just put a windshield on it. It's much more efficient and maintains freeway speeds better, and also increased my gas mileage significantly.
dude i'd be so affraid of going into a death wobble with such a small bike, or getting sucked into the tandems on a tractor trailor. i cant believe it didnt blow up. nice.
I can tell you're not in Florida... going 80, you'd be one of the slower vehicles on the road. People drive insanely fast here. Stay safe, dude. Great video.
lol well on i 95 you can see them dooin 95 lol i just came back from florida and just about all the way on high ay such as, i-90, i-77, i-79 and such, we would do 80-85 and people still pass us.
this bike is amazing great mpg and its top speed is not much higher than the speed limit its just about fast enough to get the job done so no speeding tickets :)

CmoreBuhts 11 months ago
@CmoreBuhts Mine does that too, it seems to be a trait of the rebel. once it's warm, its fine, but it takes a while to get there.
KriegPherd 11 months ago
@KriegPherd oh i see, well im getting used to it now just let it run for a minute or two and then its safe to take off without looking like a momo

This won't fly on the expressway where I live. The right lane goes 70mph, and the leftmost lanes are doing 85mph. You need the ability to escape stupid drivers.

height and weight? I wanna get one because of the gas prices going up....I have a truck....please reply.

Your bike runs well. What are the things i need to watch out for when buying a used 250? Thank you for your reply
emailbryan 1 year ago
@emailbryan Bring a mechanic. Make sure the bike has been stored properly, or it may get expensive. Battery, carbs, chain, tires, levers.

I just happened to watch your video with the Rebel 250. I'm going to be a new rider and since I live on a mountain and there are areas on the road that are pretty steep. I was wondering if this bike could bring a person weighing 180 lbs up the hill with the speed limit is 40 mph. thank you
onevirgo1 1 year ago
That can't be right.I can't get my cmx 250 up past 75. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough.
TheJoeOriginal 1 year ago
@TheJoeOriginal You can change out the rear sprocket and get jardine pipes, it will give you plenty of speed.
Gratch2222 1 year ago
@TheJoeOriginal Looks like he has his windshield angled back pretty good. A sloped windshield is much more aerodynamic than a human body.

Don't go 88 mph! You don't have enough plutonium to get back to 1985!

It would probably go faster without the windshield dude...

I'm thinking of buy a Rebel, my question is does the windshield make a difference?
PsychoholicMaggot 1 year ago
@PsychoholicMaggot You really should have a windshield if you plan to ride without safety gear. But when you have gloves, helmet, boots, pants on you really don't feel any difference with or without the shield. Got my Yamaha v-star 250 without one, does not make a difference at all! Performance wise, it will slow you down a bit if your planning on a 250 cc.

larry5849 1 year ago
do you have to "floor it" ?
mujjuman 1 year ago
@mujjuman Because it is a 250, you may not have enough power to keep up with traffic on highways with 75 mph limit; we all know people go 85 on those. In that case, it is necessary to "floor it" to keep up with traffic. The bike is very good at accelerating, so that is not really an issue.

So, I asked the question on rebel250(dot)com but I am still not sure about it.
I am looking at taking a 600-700 mile trip on my rebel. Aside from my butt going numb, can the rebel stand up to 75-80mph for an extended amount of time?

I'am very young and am looking for a honda rebel. Are there any other bikes like this in its price range?
David11941 1 year ago
ive been considering a rebel 250.. or any 250cc class honda.. ive learned on a nighthawk 250. i know that this engine is pretty small and lacks real power but i cant see myself going beyond 85mph.. i never do in my car even on the interstate. i found a few rebels used in my area for $1000 to $2000. and im looking to pay cash, and they seem worth it. great video btw.

Dude, slow down. No reason to push that poor little 250 so hard.
6of6 1 year ago
@6of6 It's actually only 233cc. But I've got one of these things and they are actually a lot of fun.
RedirXTV 1 year ago
@RedirXTV And you can actually buy aftermarket sprockets for this bike that allows it to cruise at higher speeds at lower RPM. The trade off is you lose a little acceleration from take off, but if you're looking for fast, you need to consider a different bike. The loss in acceleration is very minimal though. The Rebel is great at what it was made for, short hops around town and the occasional cruise out through the country side. They're fun, very economical, and very reliable.
RedirXTV 1 year ago
@RedirXTV I do too. An '85 250 (233?) Rebel.I hate driving it on the 10 fwy. Even though it keeps up, it just doesnt sound pleased.

gona get my rebel this weekend my inspration this guy
hkisk8tr 1 year ago
You're going to experience much more fatigue on a Rebel doing 80 as opposed to a larger displacement motorcycle. The high rpm's on the Rebel transfer vibration through the bars, footpegs, and seat right up through your body. It's like riding a blender. It's a fantastic beginner bike for in town commutes, but I would stay off the highway for the long haul.
mahmahmonkey 1 year ago 2
@mahmahmonkey You'll get used to it if you do it all the time.
Anavengertg 1 year ago
@mahmahmonkey Vibration? Vibration is minimal on the honda rebel at high speeds. It pretty much disappears after 60mph.
Anavengertg 1 year ago
@mahmahmonkey ... well, I ride a R1 in the summer on the back road and when its not rainning and I commute on the interstate with my 02 rebel everyday 30-35 one way. it does just fine for me and I think its more comfortable than the R1.

TRrav27 1 year ago
I also have a 34" inseam, so we'll see how well I fit.

neatpleats 1 year ago
creates a bubble for the rider, so you don't get hit by windblasts.
sinblesser 1 year ago
@neatpleats I have a dual sport, and I just put a windshield on it. It's much more efficient and maintains freeway speeds better, and also increased my gas mileage significantly.
