Hi, I have a 2 year old yorkie that was diagnosed with a liver shunt last year and went for major surgery to fix it. She was given a 50/50 chance that if they fixed and closed off the vessel that the liver would not be able to handle such blood flow and she may seizure and die. It was a big risk but we were willing to do anything for our baby. During the surgery the abnormal vessel was not found. She now is on meds for life and we have her bile acids checked twice a year and she is doing better
I am going crazy!!! My 1 and a half year old precious yorkie just went blind suddenly and when I went to the vet, I was told that his liver enzymes were out of normal range. They think he has liver shunts. Nobody knows why he suddenly went blind. Does he have to have surgery? He is only 3 lbs and is soooo precious to me. How can I help him?
is he ok now :( like does it happen often to him does he shake a lot often) may god bless ur terrior may he live happily :( these big words come from a little girl
The words liver shunt came into our lives two weeks ago. Ginger, our 3 year old Yorkie, was diagnosed with the condition after she'd experienced several bouts of pacing, circling, head pressing, drooling. A blood test confirmed a liver problem. An ultrasound confirmed the shunt. We were told she needed the liver shunt surgery right away. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at CSU in Ft. Collins took her in. The second day after surgery, she suffered a seizure and died. We are devastated.
Hello! I have greyhound with LS. He is almoust 2 years old. He is eating the Royal Canine Hepatic feed. The Hills l/d feed didn't work on his well.I have the question to owners of dogs with LS: have your dogs more often pissed through this illness? My much and at home is also spouting out.
Hi. I moderate a website for dogs with liver disease. I have a 6 year old Maltese who also has a shunt. You can get more ideas on supplements that will help Mex from our site. You can join DogLiverDisease at Yahoo groups. We have several hundred members successfully managing their dog's liver disease and would be happy to help. Is Mex on lactulose and low dose antibiotics? Zinc will also help with the thin coat. There are many other things that help too! Mex is a real cutie!

I have a 5month old yorkie who is going through the same thing.Yesterday she went into convulsions and was actually blind for a whole day!It usually happens once a month and we are considering getting the surgery, but the vet says that she is too small..if anyone has had the surgery, how big is your yorkie?Besides going to the vet several times and them giving you the run around what else have you done? Please help!!
My baby had a liver shunt- she died yesterday. She was a maltese and she was only 3 pounds. She was undiagnosable at a young age but later ( a week ago) she develpoed weakness and was unable to stand. we took her to the vet and she was supposed to have surgery today but her condition worsened and later passed away in her sleep, last night im sooo sad :(
we have a four month old yorkie puppy with liver shunts and we dont have the money for the surgery and i was wondering how long she can survive without the surgery. shes on a special low protein diet and there giving her Lactulose syrup until gone. should she be getting anything else? Thanks a lot any advice is appreciated.
My 1 year old yorkie had shunt surgery last week, I thought I was feeding him properly, with a low protein diet and it simply was not good enough , he spent 3 days in critical care 2 months ago. He eats Hills K/D with steamed sweet potatoes, carrots and green beans. Meds are 3ML Lactulose and 0.2ml Biosol (Neomycin) every 8hrs. I was told he could live 2yrs on meds that's why we decided on the surgery. Reach out to Yorkie rescues for help with the surgery it's expensive but the best option
Hi, I'm fka futuremil2008, I changed names....I put my yorkie down last June, her body had enough. I posted a blog about the disease known as Liver Shunts and wanted to share with you and your visitors...I'm still not over her, it's just as bad as losing a family member...take care, hope your baby is doing well. You can google Coco Angel Baby, good luck to anyone with a yorkie and a liver shunt, it is a heart wrenching thing to go through....
It also affects kittens. My cat was born with a liver shunt: he had seizures and was totally blind when he was diagnosed with it. He had a surgery, 25% chances to survive it. I'll never regret the choice that I made. Now he sees and gets a real kitten life. He still has seizures (so what? Phenobarbital is less than 5$ a month) and not purring. But he gave us so much over the years we'll do everything for my baby cat. Thanks for your advices! Long life to the adorable Mex!
I have a 7 month Yorkie boy who has liver shunt, I will let someone have him if they can provide life saving surgery, prefer vet. He is a beautiful 2 1/2 pound heart stealer and oh so sweet
University of Tennessee vet school has the best doctors for this surgery and it is affordable. If you can't afford it, you can apply for carecredit. Your dog needs to be on lactulose. It is very inexpensive, and makes a huge difference.
my yorkie died of unknown reasons...my mom never took him to the vets b/c she couldn't afford medical attention......most likely the cause was because he ate something bad out of the garbage :'( it was sad...his stomach looked like a balloon and he wouldn't eat...then he died :'(
well fist of all you should have a dog if you can afford it and i am really sorry that your yorkie died because they are like the most cutes things ever I have one and i can't live without her she is my WORLD!!!!
@della206 please do not let your mother have any more pets/animals as she obviously doesn't care enough to make sure she can afford them. that is sick.
@SisterSunshineTV But this is preferable to these selfish old bags who keep blind, deaf and lame pets SUFFERING beyond what is reasonable or compassionate, simply because they have an agenda to keep the animal alive. That is sick. it alse smack of extreme attachment, (to give a Buddhist term).
@SisterSunshineTV SS you are just as retarded as a Buddhist as you were as a Christer. Sold all yer Bibles yet? Just think of all the money you wasted on religious books over the years.
I have a 3yr old yorkie that was dignosed with Liver shunt after a bile acid test done on Monday. I was given antibiotic and Lactulose Solution and Hills Prescription diet food. I'm suppose to do an Ultra Sound to see exactly what is going on with the liver. I'm so broken hearted to look at my Armani and know he has this awful desease. Thankfully he hasn't been disoriented this week. I think if i keep giving him his diet and medication he should be fine for know.
I'm so happy for you and Mex. My lil girl about 2 mths ago our vet gave her 1 wk to live so we decided to rush her to get livershunt surgery about 4 wks ago and she's doing much better now, but she still does some pacing around the house. May I ask does Mex pacing after the surgery?he's on L/D diet from Prescription Hill's I'm wondering if this got anything to do with her still pacing?what kind of food does Mex on?how's his health condition? wish u nMex have a wonderful happy day ! thanks =D
If the puppies get surgery early enough will the puppy grow or will their growth forever be stunted? I along with my vet believe my puppy has a liver shunt. I'm in the process right now of saving the money for the testing.
thank you for posting a heartfelt video, our puppy has livershunt and has recently undergo surgery. We hope one day to show a video of our pebbles living life as a normal puppy. To all those loving pet owners that pets have been diagnosed with liver shunts dont despair - there is so much help out there for you,

My Yorkie has a serious liver disease which just developed recently, but stems from the fact she too was bought in a pet shop-Sometimes the problems take time to develop, my baby is only 3 and she started showing signs of liver disease a couple of months ago. She almost died on me, i nursed her back to health like a baby! Most people are not prepared to take care of a sick animal- My Yorkie is fed with a syringe 3 times a day, is on liver supplements, gets lactulose and vitamins.

I lost my girl 1mth ago to a liver shunt- 2.5k on medical bills. At 7mths she stopped responding to her meds/diet and seizures came back. We were informed surgery causes high risk for shock once blood flow is diverted back to the liver. The surgery would cost 6k- shorter life span/ poorer quality of life. I will be more careful in choosing a pup in the future. I would also suggest breeders have the parents examined before concentrating on their own pockets. Save at least 8k before buying a pup.
Did your dog ever have to have surgery, my dog was diagnosed with the a liver shunt and they tell me he will need surgery. when your dog has these episodes of confusion and such, how long does it last. my pups lasted 6 hours

I had a toy yorkie with liver shunt.. I have spent over $5k for medical... he couldn't make it to his 1st birthday. If you have a yorkie, you must get it checked up.
Great site. I foster liver shunt dogs. One of the ones I have now has been in the hospital for over a week. His bill is over $3000. and he is yet to have surgery. Great little guy too.
my puppy is 6th months old and weighs 7.5 pounds..... he has a liver shunt. ive been looking for inspiration and help if u have any will u please let me no. and thanx for making this video it has tought my mom and i something and i wish u and mexy all the luck
Yahoo has a LS and MVD support group with lots of info. RC Hepatic is our food of choice, and apple bits and watermelon can be added to food and given as treats. Lactulose and antibioitcs like Neomycin are important in controlling neurological symptoms secondary to toxins building up in their systems. Probioitcs like Azodyl/Vetoquinol or VSL#3 are also very helpful in getting rid of ammonia that builds up in their system.
