Thanks for putting this up! It's one of my all time favourite songs by Tull! I love the slideshow too, really well done! Schottish Fairies seem to be more mischievous than our Irish ones.^^ Greetings from Ireland, Lily XXX
@LilyPicta7 Thanks, you're very kind. I definitely wanted to try and bring the story of the song out in the images. And yes, those Scottish Fairies do seem to be particularly troublesome. Ah, Ireland, huh? Wow, that's wicked cool. Best wishes from the Pacific Northwest coast of America... Steve OOO
@LilyPicta7 Yes, I've always loved the instrumentation in this piece -- a fine little Fairie jig which makes our feet want to follow the rhythm. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic little song about the little people, this with "Songs from the wood" album with "Jack in the Green" in the similar vein as this song shows Ian tapped in to that pagan spirit world and captured it in music, blessed be indeed.
@permaveg I always find comments like yours to be a true delight to read. I've long harbored an appreciation for Ian's willingness to explore such subject matter in a musical/lyrical form, and he has done so quite thoughtfully. 1975's "Pan Dance" strikes me as a facsinatingly wondrous foreshadowing of later works, such as "Jack-In-The-Green", "Cup Of Wonder", "Dun Ringill", "Weathercock", "Mayhem, Maybe", and others containing elements of ancient Celtic spirituality. Thanks so much for watching!
@gothling1955 I only became aware of "Pan's Dance" in 87 or 88 when the twenty years anniv boxed set came out, reading through the booklet that came with the set it said the track in question was dedicated to the "Top of the Pops" dance group "Pans People", curious. Ian has certainly studied the "old path" i feel. First time i've seen all the lyrics too, thanks for that and the brilliant pics that accompany it, made me smile, good work. Much thanks.
Added, favorited and subscribed to.Curse no five star system for this deserveth it. Once owned the boxed set but it was the cassette version and when listened to as much as I did they are a fragile and finite thing.(curse my not having dubbed them and wore out and lost the copies) Replacement of the set has been futile to date.Bless you Gothling for your caring enough to post the lyrics and slideshow. And blessed be Jethro Tull in all their forms throughout the years and generations.
@Pynaegan You're very kind. I'm just pleased beyond measure that anybody out there might enjoy this rare gem as much as I do. Yeah, I know how you feel: I had that limited edition box set in vinyl form, and a few months later (when I grudgingly made the switch to CDs), the CD edition was nowhere to be found anywhere. Couldn't even order it through the record store, as I found out. In any case, I was more than pleased to post the lyrics, since Ian's words are always worth reading. TULL FOREVER!!!
i absolutely love this song... this might of been asked or said before, but does this song sound quite Celtic, like almost an Irish Folk song??? not sure if it is just me?
@crissi812 You needn't worry, because your ears do NOT mislead you, not in my humble estimation. For me, one of the most significant hooks in Tull's music has been an occasional Celtic musical flavor, which at times has been permitted to take center stage and really shine. In the case of this song, the flute & whistles are decidedly Celtic, as is the tale told lyrically of a mischievous band of "fairy folk" reeking havoc on a small town. So glad that you love the song, too. Thanks for watching!
@gothling1955 Gothling now that you mention this i myself can see exactly what you saying..... and I also must say the images you have used in this video to portray the story have a total corrilation
@gutgol Yes, I agree, it's a really great song. The fact is, I would love for someone to ask Ian Anderson the question you posed here. Although he tends to give pretty vague answers in response to such inquiries (he has long frowned on explaining his creative porocess in too much detail), I'm sure that it had to have been inspired by much the same general elements of Celtic mythology which also inspired "Jack-In-The-Green", "No Lullaby" & "Kelpie".
Thank you for those very encouraging comments. It realy is a great song, I've thought so since the first time I heard it. I've always had a huge appreciation for Tull's acoustic works.
I 'm out of words, i used to listen to this song from their 20th anniversary album though sadly not the box set, unfortunately i couldn't find one, when i was about 13 years old! Thank you for what you gave to me with this video, it was truly awesome! Jethro Tull are the best!
I appreciate your very thoughtful comments. I'm pleased that you like the song (and the video) so much. I'm so glad that Ian took the trouble to finish it from it's bare-bones state for the 20th anniversary release. Yeah, that premium version of the box set wasn't available for too long. I initially bought the vinyl version (5 records & a cool booklet), then later I realized that it was time to bite the bullet & make the switch from vinyl to CDs -- but by then it was gone, nowhere to be found.
Thanks so much, I appreciate your very kind encouragement. With just about every "slide show" style video I put together, I usually have a resource file filled with four times as many images than I end up using -- but I always try to utilize the absolute best of the batch, and it's loads of fun trying to characterize whatever Ian has put forth in the lyrics. Thanks for watching.
I do, too. This is a real little gem of a song. I love the instrumentation & Ian's lyrics are always worthy of closer examination. Glad you liked it so much.
My mother plays this song in the car :) I used to relate it to being car sick as a child- ha ha- as my mother would repeatedly play it on long journeys. Now, i'm out of the car, I can appreciate this song for what it is; a work of art.
Thanks so much for looking in on my little "ode to fairies" clip. :-) I think my kids could certainly relate to your childhood plight of riding in the car on a lengthy journey & having to listen to certain Tull songs over & over again. I think they'd probably use a much stronger term than "car sick", too. LOL! Well, I'm glad that you could overlook such traumatic experiences to see another side of it all. I wasn't sure what the song was about till I read the lyrics. Ah, lyric sheets are GOOD!!!
Wow Gothling, this slipped right by me! Glad I caught it, really love what you did with this, the imagery is very mystical and really ties together with the music. Really cool video and very unique as always! Glad to see your back at making these.
Thanks, Aqua! I'm glad you found my fanciful little clip, too. Yeah, along with "Aqualung", this was another one that I'd already done a lot of prep work on before the big move. It also appears that we've gotten the bugs out of our internet connection (at last), so uploading isn't the nightmare it was during our first few weeks here. Anyway, I'm pleased with the way this came out. Sometimes I wish that I could do up all of my own graphics from scratch, but geez, that would take FOR-EV-ER... LOL!
Always a pleasure to watch your work. Like I said it is good to see your back at making these, I look forward to watching them always. Well, they've done it again and went and removed my # 1 pick in "My Top 20 Guitarist" series........AGAIN! Relentless bastards!
I'm so glad that you liked it, and it's so gloriously appropriate that you're the very first to comment on it. For such a short clip, it was a little tricky to edit. Still, I think it came out okay. After compiling loads of fairy graphics, I re-tweaked a lot of the pics to appear darker, then added the trusty glow effect. And yes, I very much enjoyed being able to give dear Twig a wee guest appearance. :-)
