I just have this to say, painted shells are like playing with matches. You may or may not get burned, but why would you risk it knowing the pain your going to cause? Painted shells are usually painted with paints that are non toxic to HUMANS, not crabs. If you provide the proper home for your crabs they should be beating the hell out of their shells climbing, and digging, and fooling around with one another. Paint chips will be ingested and its not healthy. Why do that to your babies?

i'm not meaning to cause trouble but i've had Sheldon ( my hermit crab ) for 3 years and he's never gotten sick and he hasn't died yet. He has no problems and loves to be played with and his 1st time changing shells i let him choose a shell in the shell store and he picked a painted shell.I think there is nothing wrong with painted shells though the fact that these men/women

are forcing these lovable animals in there shells. But all people have there opinions :)

We are fighting against the practice of purchasing painted shells because of the torture crabs go through to be placed in these shells They are pried out of their natural shells and stuffed into half dry painted shells Its what the painted shells stand for. Also just because your crab is doing alright doesn't mean this practice is safe at all. Your just getting luck while playing with fire.

If the paint takes to long to set the crab can stuck inside, and its extremely uncomfortable, but also the fumes from the paint are toxic, as well as the chips that are broken off when the crabs go about thier daily lives. (with proper home they should be climbing, and exploring extensively) Eating these paint chips can make your crab sick. No paint should be used with crabs, including decor and especially shells

I had my hermit crab for 6 years and he came in a painted shell. I gave him the option of several different shells (painted and non-painted) and he always chose the painted ones.

this is really weird i have a hermit crab and he or she was in a non painted shell. i bought all my extra 3 shells in the same size. 2 of them were non pained. 1 of them was painted green. i put all 3 shells in the cage and somehow my crab after a couple of months he move into the paunted shell.......weird

@kooldud444 Yes they are, the paint often cracks off and is toxic to them. my 1st two crabs came in painted shells (died 3 months later) and as soon as I got them home they changed into the natural shells I had purchased. None of them ever touched the painted one I bought, either. Only give them natural shells if you want your crab to live a long happy crab life.

@kooldud444 Depends on the species of hermit crab and where he came from... there are red shells that aren't painted. Purple clawed crabs will shy away from brightly colored shells... remember they are animals, and bright colored shells in the wild would be like a giant neon-lit buffet sign!

You buying crabs + all the other bleeding hearts out there who rescue them by purchasing them --> greater demand. So, the manufacturers will increase their supply-- and the abuse of crabs -- proportionally.

That was very cruel. Not only does the paint polluting their water, but it chips off and they eat it. Since the paint is toxic, they will die. Some petstores say they use non-toxic paint, but I find that hard to belive. If you have questions about hermit crabs (purple pinchers) then right me a message or comment on my page.
