Is there some reason Americans cannot say "second"? It always comes out as "seccut". It's the same with "didn't" (ditten) "wouldn't (wootten), "couldn't" (cootten) etc. Disgusting abuse of the Queen's English.
great video! I already have the 3100, and I'm really wanting the V1 so this was a great way to compare the two. I work at a camera store and I actually brought home a V1 tonight to play with ;-). I agree that the limited menu controls of the V1 are kind of a bummer, but I think I would get over that pretty quick considering the fabulous photo quality I seem the be getting out of the V1... I'm pretty sure one will become mine in the near future ;-)
Fantastic video snapchick! Recently decided to finally make the jump to DSLR, had my heart set on the D3100 only to learn of the current NIKON stock situation, would you still recommend the V1 over say a D5100?
@057Spy If you intend on building a larger system, go with the D5100. If you don't see yourself buying more than a lens or two and want something that's smaller to carry, go with the V1.
I have a 'newbie friend' looking to purchase a camera that shoots crisp photos on automatic. Would you recommend either of these two cameras, or a Canon t2i?
My point was...is there a more comparable DSLR where you also match the price range....599 is not 830 dollars...how much more will 200 dollars get you on a DSLR and would the V1 still win...even for your purpose.
@fausto412 No DSLR available at any price is as good at a wide range of activities like the V1 is. DSLR advantage is the use of all of the SLR lenses available.
Funny and entertaining. Enjoyed the "price is right" type product modeling when points were awarded. Also like that you used "remiss" well in the video. lol
I was told ' Invest in your Glass ' , camera bodies will come and go, I can't see Nikon increasing the lens range for this little hybrid, but I do agree its personal thing too ;)
this snapchick is crazy d3100 is the shit for a slr i dont care about that shit v1 is ok but when you are working on be coming a photographer you need a slr and for the price d3100 is the one to go with hands down on that.
Love my V1. As my photography matures I find myself shooting more street and candid shots. The V1 might (maybe) be the ultimate digital street machine. Small, light, silent, fast!!! Quick and easy to use. Isn't that the big appeal of Leica? As for the the lack of buttons I'm starting to like that too. ISO 400 F4, AF and be there. :)
I feel also you should have compared directly to the lesser J1 which is of a simmaler pricing.
As a fun camera, or should I say take it to the party the V1 would be a great choice , but for me the D3100 wins hands down , because it looks Nikon and not Lumix , Sony , fuji , pocket jobbies.
Hi Snapchick as new owner of the D3100 I can see some of your points about the V1 over the D3100 , but .... your talking about a more expensive camera to start with that could cost anthing up to $900 / £800 for the V1 in the Uk, also the d3100 cost's $650 / £430 Uk , not a fair comparison as D3100 wins in cost alone!!
@mosquito1958 But if you want something like 30 frames per second, the discount of the D3100 starts to matter less. It's all a matter of what the individual buyer is looking for.
I might get the v1 for venues where a dslr is is not allowed. I am looking at owning Nikon products along with my Canon T2i so thank you for all of your hard work. and having fun while you do it. And have notes on the side is a good way to stay on track so boo to those that keep talking about it.
@shanetralee I kept some notes off to the side of the camera, as I sometimes do. Bronchitis, cold medicine, and a 14 minute video... it must have been fun to make, but it's a bit of a hazy memory :)
@101MrFunnykid Sometimes when I rehearse, I end up talking like I have rehearsed. I try to get it all out there for you guys, and for me, that takes a bit of practice. :)
@101MrFunnykid No problem. I just don't have the gift of talking for nearly 15 minutes and getting all of the facts in while speaking "off the cuff." Working on it every day, though :)
@ TheSnapChick As an owner of the D3100 I enjoy this vid...but the ISO on the D3100 with its larger sensor would win m over. Also...I appreciate the size but the design of the V1...with the "lump" above the lens....i hate that! Great video miss and thanks for answering my question about the OK button. Anything els you feel should be shared about the feel and quality of the d3100?
@bsgtrekfan88 I like the D3100 body. It doesn't feel as solid as, say, my D2x or D300s, but it's a lot lighter and easy to pick up and get shooting. I can look at ISO with the V1 two ways. I can say with a straight face that the high ISO performance on the D300s and D3100 is better. But, not too many years ago, the D2x, D80, and D70 were my "go to" cameras, and the V1 is much better in low light than them.
@philtrapp Every time I mention the V1, it's good for a few dozen dislikes :) I am straight with my opinions, but I do not try to impose them. I have to admit, I bought the V1 as a glorified point-and-shoot. After using it, though, I realize I underestimated. Many of the V1 comments that I see here and elsewhere online are from non-users. All that said, I have not lost any love for the D3100 :)
@TheSnapChick i think a lot of people dislike the V1 as a concept as a whole. we're all amazingly baffled as to why Nikon would introduce yet another sensor format (FX, DX, and now CX), which is completely on its own and doesn't bother to embrace at least Micro-Four-Thirds which would have effectively given Nikon a big head start, and also it isn't (yet) at all compatible with all the Nikkor lenses that Nikon people have. right now, Canon should introduce a M43 camera to kill N.
@bluepowder7 I appreciate what you are saying and I do agree that you have concisely captured many of the opinions on the V1 (well stated, by the way). Maybe I'm just open minded or flexible on this, as I'm evaluating the camera itself, not its conceptual position in the market vs cameras with various sensor sizes.
@AKAtheProwler There are a number of sites with full-size sample pics at all ISO. Not to far down my site there is a 100% crop at base ISO and a bunch of studio work with the V1 and there's some high ISO night stuff on my Facebook page. My site is not a "reference" type site. I look to dpreview, etc... to shoot test targets, etc... for the folks that are looking for that.
Something not mentioned is the price. The V1 isn't your regular point and shoot price range. best price on google shopping is $825. You can buy a basic d3100 camera kit for $599. When price is thrown in the mix it's hard for me to justify the V1. I have an S8100 for point and shoot + video purposes and that cost me $250. The S8100 sucks are night time shooting with no flash but daytime or night time its really good. S8100 suffers from one annoying flaw...the occasional over exposed/flashed photo
@fausto412 It's all a matter of what your priorities are. For me, the V1 as a real video solution on an interchangeable lens camera (For my purposes, the D3100 is not a robust video solution without additional equipment) and the never-say-die focus tracking on the V1 far exceeds the price difference. Your priorities may be different. The is my Deathmatch and I found my winner. Your Deathmatch might turn out different.
D3100 > V1, D3100 leaves more room for improvement, with it's lenses. Also if you decide to upgrade your body there are many more options as opposed to the V1 (Currently). Also the D3100 is cheaper, you can also get a D90 body for the price of a V1. And also if you look @ the other options you can get a Micro Four Thirds camera, which has more lens selections and adapters to make it worth your while. Some M4/3 cameras are also cheaper and have a bigger sensor. Why get the V1?
@bpmuzik808 I think I pretty much covered this at 1:47 and 12:37. I'm not telling you what or what not to buy. I'm talking about my reason for buying each of these two cameras and which meets my own intent better for me. You may have different intentions and needs. For me, why carry a D90 when I can carry a V1? For you, your answer might be different.
I totally agree with your choice. I've got a d3000 and find its menus and info screen utterly annoying! So much that I gave it to my kids to use. Me - I shoot with a d300, but would love to get the v1 for quick shots and for test pics
Another excellent vid; can't help grinning from beginning to end. Your vids are always so funny but it doesn't distract from its educational purpose. Why did you "kill" your D3100? Am I supposed to kill mine too? (joke) But I just got it like 8 hours ago. So sorry though that I can't send you a vid of my unboxing of my new cam coz I don't have another cam to do that. Sigh!
I like your videos more when it's not just you talking, but when you have a camera or a lens in hand, the video becomes way more interesting. Just thought of letting you know if you didn't. Keep up the good work :)
@UrDadIsBent88 I have a few different types of videos... some I talk more than others. In this one, I wanted to really get the facts down, because I'm getting many questions daily about these cameras. I showed off the cameras in a couple of places in this video, but you'll see a good variety in upcoming videos :)
I have a Nikon D3100 with the 2 kit lens (18-55 and 55-200) and I would never change it for a Nikon V1. Nice comparison, it could help someone who has a hard time to decide on what to buy.
@DR1F7W Exactly. Everyone has their own personal Deathmatch! This was mine. I also really enjoy packing up the D3100 and those same two lenses, and heading out into the world :)
dislike not cuz i disagree (personally i ditched all of nikon to go to canon), but because they're quite different solutions to honestly different 'problems' / challenges. i think that a "body only" or "kit only" deathmatch is too closed-minded / short-sighted. behind the 3100 is a whole system of gear and an upgrade / growth path, whereas the 1 is a tiny hamlet that only gives you a tiny set of choices for breakfast - eggs, or toast?
@bluepowder7 They are different... but what surprised me is how much of the D3100's capability that the V1 can do as well or better. The majority of people who write to me with questions have one DSLR camera body and the kit lens that they purchased with it. Some people want to build a larger system, and a DSLR is perfect for that. For those without the ambitions of a larger system, the V1 is worth evaluating.
@TheSnapChick I can't agree with that. I have a Canon 40D and a Sigma 50mm f/1.4. With this setup (Just at/around $1,000) I have managed gorgeous photos that the V1 never could have dreamt of. I'm sorry, but the V1 is an overpriced 4/3's and will remain that way until it either steps it's game up or comes down in price, below it's cheaper (and frankly, better, competitors.)
@ggill1313 Everyone is after something different. As I stated in the video... my rules and my opinions. I encourage disagreement and discussion. I, myself, shortchanged the V1 until I had one in my hands and worked with it in the field. I'm not telling to buy one. I will say that it's capabilities surprised me compared to the D3100. One thing I try not to do is speculate. Others can as they wish - I prefer to get my hands on something before forming a strong opinion.
You are drop dead gorgeous!!!

For those without the ambitions of a larger system, the V1 is worth evaluating.

not break the bank? The Nikon 1 is like £700 plus ($1k UK Price)

@Maxsdiscos When talking interchangeable lens bodies, lenses, and other accessories, $1k is only the beginning...
