  • PART 3: It is just like if you applied to show at an aboriginal gallery to promote aboriginal artists and you were not aboriginal. I don't know if this is the case, best of luck in your creative endeavors.

    ps sorry this was long

  • I've been in shows about Africanism, and I'm clearly not African. I Understand the need for rules, but art galleries should invest in the best work. Thats my point.

  • PART 2:The gallery in my town is geared to promoting local and Canadian artists, and I don't think that this is something against other countries it is that the town is small and more people will come out to see a local artist, as apposed to (for lack of a better word) strangers work. I think it is just a financial thing. I would suggest visiting the websites and reading the mandates of the galleries you apply to.

  • PART 1 :Hello, I am under a friends account so don't harass him. I am not sure where you applied; however you mentioned that they were small galleries. I am Canadian. I live in a border town with a small gallery and I recognize there are a lot of politics when it comes to the selection of artists. Were you familiar with the mandate of each of the galleries you sent your proposal to?

  • Because Americans are imperialists, who control our government, and send military during civil unrest, which is coming from the economic crisis that was created by American greed.

American soldiers coming to canada, are all scum. We have every right to deny you into this country, and we should.

    You can't run our country.

  • Its not about running a country moron: its about showing art...What is the matter with you?!?!?

  • It's a boycott! Just like South Africa in the 80s. Innocent people get hurt, but it puts pressure on the government. You live in a facist state that is run by war criminals. Do something aobut it, and you may be once again admitted to the group of countries that can call themselves civilizec democracies.

  • Why do you think you can come to Canada and do business without setting up a Canadian business and paying taxes? This si just more American arrogance. America acts like a bully, so Americans are treated like bukkies. Stay home - we don't want you.

  • I am all for paying taxes in the country I am doing busisness. Those are paid through the gallery. Well, they were the prevous time I had my art in Canada. And it is not American arrogance, it is me knowing that I am talented at what I do.

  • Just like you are good at drinking beer, fishing, and scooping snow...Is kind of the same. How did an ass like you get a name like Max the "Good"? You dont come off as a good person at all. At least not as good as all the other Canadians that view, comment, subscribe, or friend my channel or videos.

  • Canadian artists get preference, just like American products are protected in America. Further, America's behaviour all over the world has pissed off a lot of Canadians - most have a very negative view of the US. It makes it harder to sell your sort of art. We used to like you but a country that invades other countries for their oil makes us nervous. Like I said, stay home.

  • So this is not about taxes or operating busisness, but a comment that is more about a hatred in war? The art gallery wont accept me becaues I stared the war in Iraq? You must have a serious condition sir. This is the biggest strech of reality I have ever heard! And what exactly is "my sort of art?" And FYI: I am lining up a Canadian show for next summer. I hope you attend...

  • Your sort of art is American. I don't know you but you're caught up in the outrage against America - not your fault. But you can't expect to do business cross border without considering the politics. Like the rest of the world, Canada is pretty mad at America writ large these days. Your remarks are sounded quite anti-Canadian. Look inward!

  • The anti-canada beef comes from your rant against America. Polotics aside, you attack me for wanting to show art? By that ideal artists like Pollock, Warhol, Cassatt, Eakins, Whistler, and on and on are not allowed only because of their nationality. This on any level is wrong. Do you not see that?

  • Your video comment is indexed as "Canadian amti-Americanism". Your category! Politics affects art and business. That's reality. In America you have no idea of the enmity that exists internationally toward America. It affects things like who is shown in a gallery. I love some American artists, including those you named. But you're experiencing the consequences of your governments actions. Sorry!

  • It is a Canadian issue, not an American issue. 100%! I have been all over & have never experienced any anti American thoughts like this. And you are the ONLY Canadian that I have had that buys into this crap. How would you take it if you were refused comething all because of where you live? As a matter of fact, my grand-father is an Canadian & American citizen... But does this help it? No, not at all!

  • I live part time in Europe and Canada - I ahve been stopped on the street, mistaken for an American, and yelled at. In 2003 American patronage of French artists went down remarkably - remember "Freedom Fries"? Over 79% of Canad aind and Europeans view the US unfavourably, and most think that your President is the most dangerous man alive. That will certainly affect business.

  • But again, what does Bush have to do with art? Most people with common intellengence judge a person by their acts, but where they were born or where they call home...

  • if it were down to tax, surely they would have said so

  • Wierdly parochial. If Canadian artists are getting the same response from American galleries then you could create a co-operative and use each others mailing addresses.. just tell the stupid galleries what they want to hear. Must be frustrating though

  • This is just the beginning. It gets worse. You have to be tough, not care, and keep trying.

    wizzlewolf

  • I had no idea. Sorry about that. Did you find a gallery in the end?

  • Mike... Buddy! That's horrible! I don't even know what to say. Sorry? If I had a gallery I would show your work in a second. Art is art. It should have nothing to do with where you're from. But that's just me. Listen, email me with the places you called and I'll see what I can do here for you. I might have to make a few stops tomorrow when I'm in town. Night!

  • I think Ron may be right about currency and taxes, but maybe you should check into it more. Good luck! I guess there might be importing issues.

  • But, When I was in Montreal, it was a non-issue...

  • Mike, it may be because they would have to pay you in Canadian currency if you sold any work, that may cause a tax and tarriff issue for their gallery if they are not set up for it, it also may be part of their gallery mission to only show grass roots, it's their prerogative to do so, try a different gallery and welcome to the world of rejection!

  • I have been rejected before. This is not unique to anyone, but never because I was from the US. That in my mind is plain wrong. But maybe your right, maybe it's a tax issue... But my taxes pay for...well, thats another story...
