to the 23 people who disliked this video i am pretty sure you are not watching the same video as me this guy iis a wonderful role model he never gave up and this is how we all should be and i am pretty sure none of you would have the guts to do that. and if a bike ride gets to hard you probably go run to mommies lap. he finished that marathon with a hurt hamstring this also goes to the guys with the negative comments.

This is not a joke this really is going to happen. His Dad Jim. is going to be an Olympic torch bearer in London because of this event. No seriously, this is going to happen. Look it up on ESPN.
Not many will remember who won the gold in the 400m in 1992...few will care about it in the years to come...But no one will forget Redmond's courage to finish the race.
I don't remember this happening at all- I was 13 years old and I was a track athlete myself back then- so seems strange that this is only news to me TODAY (after reading it on the BBC).
Already reading the article on the BBC the event made me a bit teary eyed- so I decided to youtube it. After watching it now, I just broke down in tears as much as I tried to resist. Unbearably sad!
@MrThe1messiah after seeing this video I realize how truly blessed he is to have a father who would step up and hold up his son during this trying time.......Wish I could have said the same of my parents.....there should be more father's in this world like that one....God Bless....
He is not crying because of the pain you idiot. He carried on limping on the track because he couldn't accept his fate- that he wouldn't make the final. In those split seconds your mind will not accept whats just happened, understandably so, after training your whole life for this occasion.
The saddest bit is when his dad arrives and hobbles with him, that's when he fully realises- it doesn't matter what I do now its all over- no Olympic final and bursts into tears
This happened when I was 1 year old, and I only just read about it. But this is what the Olympics are all about. Sometimes these moments overshadow the glory of winning
I really don't wanna be negative... but the first thing that I noticed when i saw his father approaching was the moto of nike "just do it" . Isn't it possible to be just another marketing trick from nike? I hope not, because such stories can, really, give courage and strength, but I have my doubts...
@LetonisC im sure your right, as i recall they only ever made one Nike hat like that and it wasn't like that style of hat was popular in 1992,your definitely on to something here, as i recall Derek Redmond trained religiously for 4 years after missing out on Seoul 88 on the premise that in the semi final he'd fake a hamstring injury for what amounts to a viral advert for Nike. your some kind of genius..... the fact that the first thing you notices was a Nike hat is very very sad.
my dad want to give up with my sport, i show him this , and show him how father need to support i one who dont wana to give up!! Do you know what was my dad reaction??? Its better to dont know....
for the men that didn/t grow up with a father this is what a man is not bragging bout how many women you sleep with or who rims the biggest or who the cleanest we have to get back to being this can of man God set the stanard of what a man is anything else is not being a man and weither we live that way or not God is going to judge us by his standard
The man has a great father but it's still a sad story. To be in the olympics, with the best of the best. Look like you might win, then suddenly you a muscle and it's over like that. It's not fair, but he didn't give up, he kept trying to run but his dad came and gave him reality of the solution and the rest is one of the saddest moment in sports history. God Bless.
Hi everyone I am 10 years old and I am turning 11 this month and I am in 5th grade.
This morning I watched this video and I was crying because it was so sad so anyone who watched this I hope you feel what I felt and great job Derek Redmon. :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Redmond realized that he wasn't going to make the finals and so he pretended to be injured. His dad must have been in on this scam. Redmond just wanted to showboat to steal attention from the real competitors in this 400m heat.
when i was 12 i had a 300 m race i was so excited i couldnt wait i wanted to give it all my strength i fell down around 110meters my knees were pouring blood...i brushed away my tears and looked in the sky and said im not done yet....i gave it all my stregth every bit i ran so fast when i got to the finish i just kept on running this reminded me of that btw im 13 now :P
Hang on a minute. Google Sharon Davies: former British swimmer: and have a look at her. Derek Redmond was shagging the arse off her at the time. I have no sympathy for the lucky bastard. He should look at the old cow I'm hanging out of and pity me ;o)
It's funny because usually people remember who was first, who won the race but in this case...all they remember is him and his dad. Great moment in sports history. Makes me cry, it's just beautiful.
I don't understand... when people reply to me, their comment appears underneath mine. When I reply to them, my comment goes right to the front of the comments.
I met him in 05 when he told his story at my school, Due to my age at the time I never knew who he was.. But I found a picture with me and him.. looked him up, and found this video now, And im amazed I never knew of him!
