i love hal blaine..i admire him and i marvel not just at his body of work but of the life he has led...his experiences....think of all the great songs we all still love and how many hal played on....and hal contributed ideas...you can hear him telling brian wilson lets do a sticatto bit here when recording god only knows..it was hals idea...
In honor of Ringo's 70th, I hope U will check out my "RINGO"video. It's very retro with Beatleish touches & was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. My attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
I had the pleasure of meeting Hal personally at Pro Drum Shop in Los Angeles recently. I have idolized Hal Blaine for 30 years, he is a very cool cat, and he told me he'll be retiring soon.Hal will tell you that his work was on Beatle solo songs. Hal Blaine has never been hired at the Abbey Road studios. When the Fab broke up, then they individually used local L.A. and N.Y. studios.
Okay, folks, Ringo drummed on "Sour Milk Sea" -- great drumming, style, sound, song. Butt-kicking floor tom. Note the left-handed fills on right-hand kit -- that's Ringo, his style -- left-handed drummer playing time right-handed on right-hand set. His fills were left-handed -- very interesting on right-hand kit. Listen to Lomax's "Sour Milk Sea" -- great song; great drumming. Lovely.
I have the whole hour long interview this is taken from- it's priceless! it's one of the DVD extras on the Jekyll & Mr Hyde Rock Musical, where Blaine appears as a drunk who gets beat up by Mr Hyde- classic!
