I remember Val when he was a teen (I was in the tournament class) and his folks ran the family restaurant really nice familly - I hated sparring with him because :) I was scared to death! But he had way better control than some whose names will go unmentioned. (Yes I was at H/Vermont, then the one near Sunset in the Tullners Gehelsen days)
Do they PERMIT sweeps in open karate tournaments today? Particularly vs. the guys who hop forward on one leg while throwing half-assed kicks? I competed in several Chicago-area tournaments in the early 70s. Pads weren't required, and you had to pull strikes over the area that a hockey mask would have covered. Otherwise, you had to hit HARD. I once received a point for decking my opponent with a backfist to the back of the head. Sweeps (even throws) were very much within the rules.
Did any other real Karate guys (Real Karate Guy, doesn't equal tough, but: worked hard for a long time, with good instruction, and a good head on shoulders :) happen to notice how good/tough this guy is? I'm dead serious.
A magnificent demo of traditional karate. What a contrast between this and those who play at contemporary open tournaments, in which contestants wear costumes that don't even suggest gis, bounce like jumping beans and get points for barely half-assed techniques.
Stevevandien is obviously a COWARD, who fears us; the guys in stars & stripes who score with jumping, reaching, back-fists to the top of his head on our way down, after his successful sweep.
If nothing else, now you know you're not alone. ;)
@stevieandkiki I'm a great admirer of your uncle and Shihan Kubota. Please give Val sensei (I'd use his surname if I hadn't forgotten how to spell it:)) my best regards:]
Man was'nt this guy like 280Lbs? Thats like fighting a gorilla who's a BlackBelt. My teacher fights like him and his a gawdamn freight train coming at you. I looove Karate.
He has won countless JKA tournaments and competed in front of the late Hidetake Nishiyama. No matter what style, this guy would do the same to them as well.
Every person in every style does well by their own rules. I practiced Shotokan for 12 years, then did Kyokushin for 2 years to get a different perspective. When I went to an open tournament in my city I saw Kyokushin Vs. Shotokan at one point, and this is what I saw: The shotokan fighter had no idea what to do against leg kicks, and the kyokushin fighter had no idea how to block his face from punches.
man i saw almost every one of his fights when i was at ika. He was unstoppable. He destroyed everyone he ever fought. If there was ultimate fighting he'd be a real force.
He never oversweeps, meaning he is never off balance. His hips only twist just enough to put power behind his sweep, so his balance is always centered. The punch is just a distraction. With his hand in your face you can't see the sweep coming.
hmmm this is like one of those few vids that has a real teacher. (you shouldn't say master cuz that means that he nothing els to learn and that can never happen)
It IS practical. Val has swept me over 1000 times since 1979 and I still can't stop him even though I know it is coming! Hello from Iraq fellow IKA students!

I was close about the height. Also, I have felt his speed quite a few times I would agree with you on that.
