Not quite. It is to keep them alive, bit the oxygen is at a high level to make passengers euphoric rather than freaking out. This helps keep cabin control in such a crisis.
the comments are funny. one guy says its klm, another delta and so on. "Its an embrear 170, 190" "no! dc-8" "A380" "CONCORDE!!!"......"its a football" ->"its a stone luigi..... you didn't make it."
I heard the actual reason for the oxygen masks is because in the event of an actual emergency (i.e. the plane is going down in flames) people get excited and start hyperventilating. If they get some high oxygen content air and start hyper-inhaling it, they will black out and not be conscious when the plane makes impact and shatters into a million pieces. It's merely a humanitarian thing.
@WunderDoob That doesn't make any sense. In that case, why provide oxygen at all, everyone will just pass out from hypoxia, anyway. I don't think you could call that humanitarian.
Anyway, I was referring to the minute and a half watching the video expecting the masks to drop. Good thing I was only watching a video, or not.
Okay, since you seem to think the oxygen masks are to actually keep the passengers alive in the event of an emergency, and you're an expert on this topic, what is the oxygen content level in the air tanks that those masks are tapped into?
If i were just sitting on a plane relaxing and cruising till we landed, and these masks fell like that, id probably crap my pants it would scare me so bad.
illinoisboy yes when the cabin reaches 14K feet the aircraft automatically deploys the cabin O2 system and turns on the seatbelt sign. However, it does not illuminate the sign in the lavatories encouraging anyone in there to stay put. You do not want to be moving about right after a loss of cabin pressure as the cockpit crew will soon be making an emergency decent to breathable air (below 10K)
Are they just tangled or is there really only 4 masks per row so 2 on each site? I though they were supposed to have extras in case there are lap children aboard? Or does the E170 only have certain rows parents with children are allowed to sit on?
I wonder who took delivery of this airplane? I work on the E170/175 for a Major Regional Company here in the US. It was probably one of our planes, lord knows it is O2 Suzy... Our plane that masks drop daily.. LOL

If yes i assume that the plane is really losing the pressure, right?

The test was for the automatic mask dropping, so the aircraft was unpressurized and climbed until the masks were dropped.

Was the plane completely depressurised that you had to wear a mask or was it just normal?
BTW, You may want to add more tags like, "oxygen mask inflation" etc..
andyee 4 years ago
Just raised the cabin altitude to the value that would drop the masks. Perfectly normal test, no portable masks required.
Thanks for the "tag" hint.
