  • cant believe some people think one of the most unique voices ever can be replicated on a fretboard of a guitar, simple equation - no KC no REO. Be careful not to slip on all the peanut shells on the floor, you clowns who believe otherwise

  • @26930brad I haven't read all the comments here, but you do know that Kevin was not the original lead singer for REO, right? He was on REO 2, and then replaced by their third singer for a few years before coming back again. Kevin is my favorite singer for them, but not a founding member. For my money, no Gary, no REO. Not one song worth listening to after he left.

  • GARY=GOD

  • REO... Did not sell out, they simply went where they would get paid, and so they got paid. There is more to the story than Gary just being a drunk!!! Just know that.

I promoted a concert for Richrath/Kansas in the early 90's. Had a great time with Gary on his bus. He's a GREAT guitarist.

REO could not have sustained or even gained any longevity or staying power with the great songs like 157 Riverside Ave or Golden Country, our goal in life is to get better or what is perceived is better. Pocket

  • @crashcarney I admire your defense of REO, but can't agree with you. REO, Styx, Foreigner, Kansas, and other bands did sell out. If they had not started out as kick ass rock bands, then going pop would not be selling out, but going pop because that's where the money is, is pretty much the definition of selling out. Aerosmith managed it without losing their integrity, but Dennis, Kevin, and Mick knew they were changing horses and why. Not blaming them, but selling out is selling out.

  • Pull up a video of REO late 2010. Kevin sounds like he had a stroke or something. He sings with a bad lisp.

  • gary !!!! no doubt, no gary , no reo

  • so under rated as guitar virtiouso and he could kick it out with the best-GARY SOME OF US KNOW BETTER

  • Good OLE Rock-n-Roll before they sold out to pop !!

  • NO GARY? NO R.E.O.!!!!! PERIOD, END OF CONVERSATION!

  • I remember winning this album in a poker game, I've been hooked on REO every since. i agree they need Gary back would make a killer reunion

  • Drummer For Andraste

  • Go to 3:46 and watch as Gary picks up a can of Coke from behind the keyboard. Put it on full screen and look at the old straight-sided steel can. It was around that time that the first pull tabs were introduced. It may have been one of the kind that required a can opener. The tops and bottoms were the same and you could open either end. A lot of people would open them upside down.

  • @BicPentameter: Oops! Not Gary, but Terry Lutrell. Gary is obviously playing at that moment.

  • @Russ98661, I must disagree, but we can do that with music can't we? REO DID make some sucky records, Good Trouble? Wheels are Turnin? Hi-Infidelity is OK but that's where they SOLD out and went commercial. Kevin writes too many ballads and Gary penned GOOD solid R&R! REO is Nothing without Gary Richrath, period.

And, In my humble opinion, Riding the Storm out with Mike Murphy on Lead Vocals was their best effort. Joe Walsh guesting on slide....Classic.

  • Oh my! Look how young Neal and Gary are!

  • LOLOL Neal is just a hammering those ivories in the background! Love it!

  • Loving this REO video of my favorite guitarist!

  • Is this post Bill Fiorio REO?

  • That's their original lead singer, a guy named Terry Luttrel. He left them to join another band called Starcastle and vanished into the mists of time! REO is my fave band, I know the whole band history and everything :)

  • Garry Rithrath kicked butt back then as did the entire band. 1971-1979 was their best stuff.

  • Comment removed

  • I couldn't disagree with you more! I always thought Kevin was both a great singer and songrwriter, and a great musician. I don't think that can be denied! If you don't like KC, you've not really iistened to their later LPs.

  • Damn!! This is some amazing old footage here!!! I had no idea any existed with the original line-up!

  • Me neither! It's amazing! I hope the band releases it as part of a DVD or something, and soon! I'm a die-hard fan, so that would be something great to have in my collection!

  • Terry Lutrell Was Really Great. So wasn't Mike Murphy. But I think that kevin cronin is their best vocalist.

  • Terry and Mike were great, but Kevin, I agree, is the best one they ever had. It wouldn't be REO without Kevin Cronin now!

  • Only one member from this video is still in the band. Neal Doughty the keyboardist. and founding member. And they are still rocking as good now as they were then. Their latest album released in 2007 called Find Your Own Way Home had two top twenty hits. Find Your Own Way Home and I Needed To Fall. Both great songs and very comparable to their classic older stuff. But Roll With The Changes remains their best song and one of the greatest songs in rock history.

  • Couldn't agree with you more there! I thought their new record in 07 was teriffic, but I wish they would have done something with "Smilin' in the End"! That song rocks! The ballads are great, but they are at their best when they ROCK!

  • i know:)!it's called 38 years of rock-n-roll.reo speedwagon(1st album)is were these songs are from.reo two is also straight up rock-n-roll and from there well it just was'nt the same.peace

  • REO Speedwagon remind me of Fleetwood mac. Once they were a muscular blues band and then when they hired Kevin Cronin they turned into a bunch of wimps. In Fleetwood Mac they were a muscular blues band then started thinking with their penises and wimped out.

  • REO Speedwagon has never made a bad album, ever! They have never "wimped out"! Every record they did was a little different than the one before, but yet they never lost sight of their roots. Not too many bands can say that! Plus I saw them in 04 at the county fair out here and they still sounded raizor sharp after all these years! How many bands can you say THAT about?

  • This is a great video! Terry is so cool. I am wondering if he's barefooted in this video?

  • no shit. This is why the current version of the fake REO has no hits and why classic rock beats the shit out of the music put out today.

  • COOl

  • I didn't realise Reo Speedwagon were this bluesy and awesome.

  • Gary can play nonstop guitar riffs awesome.

  • Vintage REO I really love this!! I need to see more of this old footage! My god this brings back old memories of sneaking into clubs in Champaign, IL while I was still underage to see these guys play! Ahhh, those were the good ole days when rock and roll was real!!

  • That's Terry Luttrel on vocals. I like the early REO...it's bluesy. Cronin succeeded Terry on vocals. I always liked Mike Murphy's vocals more than Cronin. Anyone have any video/film of Murphy?? Would be around 1973-75. Thanks!

  • God bless Gary!!

Kevin's ego killed REO. He is nothing without Gary.

  • @c99999992003 RIGHT EFFIN ON!

  • this is the worst line up i think it is ok now but gary was the best

  • REO split up.

    (no Richrath, no REO)

  • @RADKRAZY what about Gratzer? with out Him REO HAs no back bone to their sound!

Their harmony is awful & isn;t highy pitched any more

  • Again...livingabovethe12th comes through with an awesome original. Thanks again Dude ! ! ^5

  • These guys were regulars at my high school (St. Viator in Arlington Heights, Il.) in 1970-71 and could really rock - Gary was the real deal on guitar! Terry went on to be the lead vocalist in a prog band called Starcastle, and you know what happened to R.E.O.....this really brings back memories! This had to be recorded at the public broadcasting studio at Southern Illinois Univ....please upload "Gypsy Woman's Passion" from this show if you have it!

  • You should include the title of the song in the subject box.

  • The first REO CD has been a long time coming on CD. But it has finally been released! Buy it right now.

Anyway, this video (and the related ones of this performance) were great to see! I have never seen live material from this early incarnation of REO. This is great stuff! Thanks you livingabovethe12th for these videos. Hopefully there are other portion of this you can add. C-YA!

  • Poster "livingabovethe12th" must be praised for the upload.Absolute gems!!!!

  • what a gem! Gary is amazing

  • I want a copy of this album bad! For those who grew up listening to the early albums of REO, Humble Pie,Deep Puyrple, this is sacred music. If anyone knows How I can get a copy of this album, please let me know.

  • Sounds like Terry pre-figured Chris Cornell (Soundgarden/Audioslave) by almost 20 years! Too bad he seemed to have disappeared.

  • Terry is my favorite REO singer! Yeah, I know Kevin brought a polished, commercial sound and Murphy was solid, but the raw sound and boogie blues vibe of early REO coupled with Terry's gravel/dirt roads vocal is terrific!

  • god damn look at Neal

  • thanks man!! I've waited a long time to see this video. I've always enjoyed early REO w/Terry Lutrell.

  • how do I save this to my harddrive?

  • no kidding! thanks livingabovethe12th

  • Great!! Thanks for uploading these livingabovethe12th.

  • How awesome. Haven't heard this in years since I don't have a record player anymore. The old Terry sound is unique and worth a good listen.

  • Superb!! I wonder what would have happened if Terry had never left the band ??
