Bill Muncey went on to drive for many years after this crash - He was killed in a crash in Acapulco Mexico. I saw a clip of this from an angle behind the hydro and Bill bailed out about 1 second before impact with the CG boat.
I was viewing this from above the north turn from my house and saw it happen. Even using binoculars you couldn't really see what was going on. We ran for the TV's and watched both boats sink live on TV just like you saw it... and, yes, that is what TV looked like then. Almost nothing was taped or filmed for showing later. 95% of everything was live.
I saw this race when I was a kid, I went on to race Hydros!

I sent Muncey a get-well card after this, & for 5 or 6 years got Christmas cards from him, done by Bob Hale, KING's cartooning weatherman

Thanks so much for posting this! I had heard about the incident, but had no idea that there was still video of it around!
Mill Muncy won many races after this crash, so I know that he, at least, survived it.

By the way, this was the ONLY peace-time sinking of a US Coast Guard vessel!!

Wouldn't you have liked to have overheard the phone call to Coast Guard HQ in DC?

He didn't die in this wreck. He died in the 1980's (82 I think?) in a different one-boat crash in Mexico.

Muncy was the first person since...like...1812 to single-handedly sink a Coast Guard cutter. Thanks for the clip!
