Outstanding video series!!! You explained things very well and precise. The amount of time that you put into this is very much appreciated. You sir have my utmost respect. 5*
Hi therem just one question, im on a star chart for TOMMO at london heathrow airport, there is two waypoints i need to get through, however if i out the first waypoint, and then the second, it will just fly there directly, but between the two waypoints there is a curve, to curve it into position to hit they waypoint and i dont know how to add it into the FMC to do that method, do you? any help would be very apprectiated
I have a question, with the pilots doing all these charts by them self what is ATC's actual job? Other than clearance for Takeoff and landing and emergency procedures
@Sarpooll Notice that only busy airports have SID and STAR charts. There is just to much traffic for ATC to be vectoring everyone so the charts were set up so that everyone enters and leaves a certain way. ATC will of course provide clearances and seperation but they do expect you at get yourself where you need to be using the chart.
@WTurbiasz So your saying that an airport like TNCM that doesnt have a STAR (and a ILS system) would that mean the pilot takes off and heads direct to its first way point?
@Sarpooll An aiport like that which is not very busy would get vectored in by ATC. Usually within 20 miles ATC would tell you where and what altitude they want you at.
@Sarpooll Ohh ok because i was wondering why some ACI (air crash investigation) videos that the gets assigned altitudes before anything happens, if that makes sense....
Thank you very much for these. I operate a Virtual Airline and am also a real world pilot. I have been in the process of makeing the same vids for my Virtual Pilots. Now that I have found yours I am now handing out hour links to my pilots and placing them in my IFR training area on our website. Job WELL done. Again thanks a lot.
really professional, I have one question while fling on line how i can know from the departure on which runway I will land at the destination airport? or just I have to set the computer up to the approach? many thanks
check the atis... usually they have 2 runways open for landing. you know it will be one or the other but wont know which one exactly until you get into the airspace
In FlightSIM: You can either first setup IFR routes before flying and decide yourself. Or make sudden request using contact ATC and request landing on whatever you like. then you select number 1 or 2 or 3 denoting each runway you wish for. But not in the real flight of course, unless you're on emergency priority ^o^.
Thank you very much for these great tutorials!! I've been picking up bits here and bits there of this kind of info but never have i found the basic info in one place. Thanks!
This is probably the best SID/STAR tutorial on youtube except for one thing. The chart says 1 minute and 46 seconds (1:25) , not 146 seconds. Great job ;)
Well, I watched all four videos and now I need to watch them about ten times over again. lol. I try to fly in flight sim as real as possible, so this helps. There is A LOT to learn! WOW! Trying to get to the point where everything is second nature.
Are pilots required to know morse code? I find it would help me in flight sim to make sure that I'm tunned to the right VOR or localizer. lol. If so, is there a great way of learning? Almost got my ham radio lic. Failed the test. lol
No pilots dont need to know morse code. Its not even required for Ham Radio anymore. As far as the Ham test get a study book, the questions never change so whats in the book is whats on the test.
well it's not required but if you are flying an older plane, Like no gps or fancy stuff. u wanna make sure the VOR is working so it's extremely important that u identify the morse code.
DH is part of the instrument approach (ILS) And decent from these Alttitude is not permitted unless the arpt or rwy enviroment is in sight. u can find the DH on presicions approaches only in the minimiums area of the app chart, example--> S-ILS 230/18 the DH is 230 and the RVR (Runway Visual Range) is 18 (1,800)ft
Thanks alot! I thought they are on all charts like RNAV approaches but I never knew only ILS, thanks alot! BTW Wturbiasz- You are a life saver, your videos are the best!
well Rnav app are non-precisions so there's no DH, if you look on the minimums area u will see something like this example LPV DA 370-1 LNAV/VNAV 560-1 LNAV MDA 520-1
LPV DA (decision ATL)is if u have certified WAAS Gps (gives lowest mins)
LNAV/VNAV is a less precise type of waas app but it still include vertical guidance
LNAV MDA- This is a gps with non Waas equipment so then u have to use this one

Keep it as real as is practicable, and KEEP FLYING. Thanks WTurbiaSZ.
If only the non pilots in my current Air Force Flight Engineer class had watched these videos a few times before we crossed that part of training. About 1/4 of us were pilots, and the rest were absolutely clueless...looked like deer caught in the headlights.
the times ate the bottom for your category of planes are only der for a safety not incase you loose ya glide slope on approach u wwould normally use the time wen performing a loc approach

If you're flying at 150kts GROUND SPEED (not indicated air speed) and 1min46secs have elapsed then you go missed.
