One of the greatest writers of the 20th century (and a bit into the 21st) - in any genre. Spellbinding prose with almost no equal in imagination (well, maybe Clark Ashton Smith). So glad to see him represented on youtube. Thank you for posting these interviews!
I am surprised how opinionated he is, how removed from science fiction he is despite the body of his work, not that he discusses money, but that it is apparently his driving force, and that he gives such a poor interview. Granted, he didn't do this a lot, but he doesn't seem to give allowances, so I won't either.

Vance is Vance, he has his philosophy and his opinions and is honest about them !
And only a complete liar would say things like: Oh - money isn't important to me. I can live in a paper shed as long as my fans are happy !
In any case, don't put too much literal constraint on his words. He has a very multifaceted and philosophical mind.

Thanks again for posting this. My comments in no way are meant to be disparaging.
This interview, at least so far, is not about his work, and in fact goes way out there on other topics.
I found it curious that he doesn't read science fiction, and in fact refused to say why.

I think it's apparent from the follow-up question that he either doesn't consider most popular fiction "good", or doesn't consider it true Sci Fi.
He wanted to avoid alienating comrades I think. Something he apparently isn't afraid of doing to Roddenberry, however O.O
