Nice! I'm a bassist myself and am considering getting this pedal for some of the stuff that I do. I've read some of the online reviews and it seems to be half & half- some people like it, some dont, but some say it has a lot of problems and quits working after a while (and not due to the batteries going dead). Have you had any problems with it yourself?
Man you are really great at reviewing. I wish all other youtubers would sort out there review technique. Well done sir. PS. I really want this pedal now.
I own the bass synth that Boss made and I only found one of two good settings(one is an auto wah and the other is a fuzz). I'm happy to be able to even use it in one of our songs.
I'm considering buying this pedal and using both pedals at once to get some crazy tones. This one seems to have more useful synth tones than the boss.
@pwhite102 I've never owned the Boss version, but I have used it a couple of times. I definitely think the Digitech has more useful sounds. That said, I don't use it very often in a band context. I like it better than the Boss, but still think synth bass is a pretty infrequent effect, unless you write songs specifically to include it.
I am using an Epiphone EB-3 bass and your bass makes sounds that I can't even think of coming from mine. Is it because of the bass, the pedal or the player?
@MORGAN1992FREEM4N just like the name says. it lowers the notes by an octave but with a little bit of distortion it sounds like an upright bass i guess you could say
@MORGAN1992FREEM4N It just adds a note an octave down from the one that you're playing. So if you play an E, then it just plays the E plus another E that's an octave (12 semitones) below it.
@squiresuzuki cheers i know what an octave is, i thought it would do this but i was just unsure do u think these sought of pedals could be used as a quick way to get to drop d tuning?
@MORGAN1992FREEM4N No; there's no way to get a drop D tuning with a pedal. You can get pedals that do whole step down tuning (like the Morpheus Droptune), but it's impossible to have a pedal that knows which string you're playing (the E string).
However, you can get a detuner to easily switch into drop D. Search google for "hipshot bass xtender". They're not that hard to install. Good luck.
Very informative review. I myself am an aspiring bassist looking for the perfect slap tone, and I was wondering. What amp are you using in this video? Even before the application of the envelope/wah, effect, your setup had some pretty good tones when slapping.
@7Ashura7 The amp is a circa 1971-ish era Fender Princeton Reverb. It's a guitar amp. I'm glad you like the slap tone with it. But, obviously, it's only suited to low volume demos. I use a Hartke 3500 with a Hartke 4x10 and 1x15 cab live. I run a Tech21 Bass Driver in front of it. I'm pretty happy with the tones on that.
Do you know if you can use this bass synth pedal with a regular 6 string electric guitar? Because I have a bass and wanted to know if I could this pedal for the guitar as well.
@XxXS1D3SW1P3XxX Sure. It works great with regular 6 string guitars. I actually tested the non-bass Digitech Synth Wah with a guitar and honestly the Bass Synth Wah works just as well. I couldn't detect a ton of difference between them.
As opposed to the BOSS bass synth which goes crazy with guitar much past the 5th fret on the D string. I have a Digitech bass synth and use it for guitar and bass. I love it.
@XxXS1D3SW1P3XxX Bass pedals are just guitar pedals with a boosted low end usually, that's why the work fine for guitars but not so well the other way round.
with the Synth 1, it sounds great when I play it fast, I just play a couple of 16th notes then let the last note take the effect. It sounds pretty great once you get the pattern going.
this pedal sounds awesome and has impressive tracking, but the envelope filter seems to be a little over done on this pedal and i play a lot of fast riffs and it might limit me, ill stick with my akai deep impact :D
Thank you, this demo was very helpful! It's great when you can hear people play the same lines and compare those instead of people just messing around.
@BassMonstrum Yes, the low end stays pretty tight. You can lose some low end on the autowah setting if you don't have it dialed in right. However, the autowah + octave low setting will keep a lot of low end. All of the synth settings have massive low end.
@seanjon590 Depends on the pedal. Some guitar pedals work well with bass and some don't. Many flangers work fine with bass, and some compressors. A lot of bass players use Big Muff pedals too. However, most guitar overdrive and distortion boxes sound really weak with bass. You just have to experiment.
this is the sweetest pedal. i got it and its perfect, you just have to get accustomed to the use of the knobs. if you're using the 3rd effect, the synth, you don;t want to have too much sensitivity cause your sound goes crazy. too much control its going to make a low moving wah you dont want either.
this pedal does NOT thin out the sound, it does not muddy it.
I ve got this pedal. Can t really use any of the effects. A little of the basic auto wah goes a long way. Most of em thin out the sound too much,or muddy it up. But I m not into effects that much.
how do you know which mode its in and how do you change it? im looking at a picture of it on guitar centers website and i dont see where it would show
On the digi tech website they have a demo of this pedal and it shows you what knobs to turn to get different sounds I found it pretty helpful you might too =]

Well, it's really hard for me to say if it will do what you want without knowing what you want better. You can adjust the decay somewhat with the control knobs. However, the wah sweep is built into some of the presets, so it might not be exactly what you need.
No, it works great with a guitar too. I made a demo of this pedal with guitar. Digitech also makes a non-bass (i.e. guitar) verson of the Synth Wah. I've tried guitar into both versions and think the bass synth wah handles guitar just about as well as the "regular" synth wah. BTW, I like Iced Earth too.
Ive tried several synth/wah/bass and never been able to get a good sound in a live setting, always sounds wonderful and exciting at home then in the show sounds toneless and lame. Does passive/active circuitry in the bass make a diff? Or what about amp/cab?
I play it in a live setting. Like all things with bass guitar, how well it stands out in the mix depends on the rest of the band and your amp. The wah settings really jump out, but they can be tricky to adjust. Sometimes it jumps out too much. The pedal works about the same with active/passive (I have both) although your bass's output will make the effect sensitivity respond different. Sensitivity is adjustable, however.
hey i see you also have the tech 21 Sansamp pedal with the three stomp pegs (switches), the black one at the top of ur board. how do u like it? im thinking about getting something thats got decent effects without losing tone quality like some bass pedals, u just get a bunch of noise&ur tone hits the crapshoot. hows the sansamp?
The Sansamp is a great pedal. It's the only bass "overdrive" I've ever really liked. Plus, it's just a great direct box for playing live or even recording.
That's not a bad idea. I'll try to get in a video review of the Bass Driver before too long. I'll probably have to video it on a guitar amp again, as I keep my bass rig at a rehearsal place and it's too much trouble to make reviews over there.
The control knob may change it a bit. I'm not exactly sure without actually fiddling with the pedal right now. But mostly I think the speed of the sweep is fixed. The knobs control more of the tone that is filtered.
all i hear is daft punk haha

Plus, it's just a great direct box for playing live or even recording.

i´m not that much into synth pedals. i get sort off seasick after a while and it just gets to much of wierd noise.
in musical aspect i find them useless but for messing around and jamming they can be fun.

That's not a bad idea. I'll try to get in a video review of the Bass Driver before too long. I'll probably have to video it on a guitar amp again, as I keep my bass rig at a rehearsal place and it's too much trouble to make reviews over there.

On mode 3 is it possible to change the speed of the sweep?
scimitar255 2 years ago
The control knob may change it a bit. I'm not exactly sure without actually fiddling with the pedal right now. But mostly I think the speed of the sweep is fixed. The knobs control more of the tone that is filtered.

Did I just hear the bass line from Taxman?

Uhhh ..... I didn't consciously play that. If I played it, it was a coincidence and an accident.

This is a fantastic demo! What kind of bass do you have?! I'm dying to know!

I was playing an Fender Precision Bass (American) in this video. Glad you enjoyed the demo.

Thanks alot. I would really like to play that someday at guitar center because that bass is too good for me ;)
