I've been training long fist at a traditional school for about three years now; to be good at defending yourself, you have to train the applications of your techniques and then you have to spar enough to learn how to read your opponent and react accordingly. What dude said about kung fu not being about fighting and that its all about control is BS. Every movement in a traditional for contains a combat application which can be drilled, and must be if you expect to defend yourself.

I know u're trying to look cool but first u need to be "urself". U need to create the Ahmet Metthew "Gong Fu spirit or style". What style u choose, must be "unique" to only YOU. Like Shi De Jian's Gong Fu. It's unique. Stop plegiarising popular styles cuz it won't make u anymore Shaolin mate.

I'd like to know where and what real shaolin is! Check my profile favourites, they're nice with some shaolin stuff. I noticed that you had rated a USA Shaolin temple video with 5 stars! Don't let all of us remain ignorant about the real Shaolin, isntead inform us all!

Mabu888, when I meant that they are not even close to the real monks I mean the monks that the monks you see preforming are way faster. But as for real monks, none of the performers are. they are wushu students trained in shaolin WUSHU, wushu based shaolin. a lot of martial arts in china have been influenced by wushu. omei, wudang, shaolin. It is questionabe wether any of those systems are truly pure as it was a few hundred years ago.

mabu888, I don't know if anyone knows what real shaolin is. The shaolin we see today is totally wushu based and if there are any real monks that do live in the temple and practice, meditate, and actually train the way that they are supposed they probably won't be seen by the public. the abbot is doing a great job comercializing shaolin and discarding its culture.there is also the forgotten part of shaolin, it's medicine. if you want to know more let me know.

I agree with you almost completely. However, as something very interesting: wushu chang quan is actually based on traditional northern white crane somewhat. Still, wushu has exactly such an influence on shaolin as you state. I hate that as much as you do. Also, I don't practice shaolin. I was, however aware, that some shaolin monks who are less associated with guoshu shaolin in terms of practice, who practice xinyi ba, da hong quan, and dozens of others traditional taolu/styles.

True, there are some monks who do know traditional style sholin but only a handful, most younger generation monks only know shaolin wushu. The thing that angers me the most is that the abbot is turning shaolin into a circus, a business. He recently spent millions of $ to build restrooms in shaolin, and started a website that sells shaolin stuff. what about shaolin medicine? What's ironic is that he allow his monks to perform worldwide but refuses to allow monks to perform at the olympics.
