I've had 2 surgeries in the last 14 months here in Canada - one at a private facility, and one at a public hospital. The longest wait was 6 weeks for shoulder surgery. Excellent care at both facilities, no worrying about coverage, and no co-pays or deductibles. Watching this debate is like watching people argue about "socialized" fire departments or roads

I'm English, and wouldn't change a thing a thing about the NHS. Not only does it give you peace of mind, that if you do fall ill that you don't even have to think about £, but also that some of your tax £ goes towards helping the less fortunate in your society.
@dazdxmg While that may be true in Britain, government run healthcare in the United States will limit people from choosing their own private healthcare plan. Many people who currently have private healthcare plans that they like and consider affordable will lose that coverage, as the United States government will consider it to be illegal. As a result they will be forced to buy a government backed plan they don't even want, ultimately costing the tax-payer.
I do agree that a country as rich as the United States should be able to help those who are truely in need, but not at the cost of those who don't desire any from of government intervention. I my opinion, Obama's healthcare bill may have been one of his worst decisions, and I hope it is removed by the next elected administration.

HR 3200 does not contain euthanasia, page 425-427 says doctors need to describe the rights of patients to the patient, unless the state law prohibits it. pg 427-428 describes what life sustaining orders are and how they must conform to state law. pg 428 describes who is qualified to do the aforementioned things. pg428-429 describe what advanced care and consultation is not and says... continued...

Only one third of patients in hospital are admitted from a waiting list and the period between the decision to see a specialist (including booking and making the 1st appointment, doing tests, getting results, discussing options and getting any op or procedure) is a median 9 WEEKS and s/b less than 18 weeks. A constitution is not the equivilant of implimentation. The U.S. has a written constitution as well, though it is hardly followed. The same is true for the NHS.

Also you also can take the NHS to judicial review if you think you have been treated unfairly or detrimentally. This whole healthcare thing is going down the wrong road. The solution to high health care costs is getting rid of all the trial lawyers filing frivolous suits suing doctors. Any doctor will tell you their #1 expense is insurance against this. With the threat of lawsuits gone they can lower the cost of their services. They are simply passing the cost of insurance on to the "customer". Trial lawyers are one of the biggest contributers to campaign funds though, so I don't see this happening soon.

This commercial is leaving out some important information, most people are going to keep there insurance and are not going to see any changes in their health care except lower cost because poor people will not wait to go see a doctor until the treatment is so expensive, instead the poor will get more preventive treatment which is a fraction of the cost.
I agree with cuts to military. The US budget right now has no real room for anything and needs drastic cuts. The problem is Obama wants to take those cuts and spend them elsewhere.

The problem with only taxing the rich is that it has been shown not to have an impact on increasing federal revenue as a percent of GDP, but it has decreased GDP.
The US government hasn't run a single program efficiently. They will spend atleast twice as much as they need if not 10 or sometimes even 100 times more.

I've had 2 surgeries in the last 14 months here in Canada - one at a private facility, and one at a public hospital. The longest wait was 6 weeks for shoulder surgery. Excellent care at both facilities, no worrying about coverage, and no co-pays or deductibles. Watching this debate is like watching people argue about "socialized" fire departments or roads

I am fairly sure about Canada and I am absolutely sure anout Britain (having lived there for many many years) that this is a COMPLETE LIE. I discussed all the choices and preferences with my doctor. And finally its my choice. Not his. We have private hospitals in UK but few people use them, because the NHS is so good. Nobody can vaccinate a child without parental consent.

Your theory on skyrocketing costs is simple- but also wrong. Rising costs are tied to what? Research and development? Manufacturing new medical tools? No. Cutting edge technology has sky high price tags when it's used- and pays for itself. Those costs are not absorbed into office visits, ER care, and simple medication.

since 1960 has the price of food gone up or down? has gas gone up or down? has the price of shoes gone up or down? has the price of electricity gone up or down? my point is as time goes by the price of everything will go up. its the natural order of things. health care is no different. plus what makes costs go up is that by law we have to give emergancy care even to people wthout coverage. so the costs are passed to consumers. illegals are the biggest problem

You haven't felt what it's like to have $450 taken out of a $1700 paycheck for insurance- and then get denied for medical help you think you need- and a 17 year old doesn't worry that a lump in his nuts might be cancer- and that the treatment might go over his lifetime allowance and put him in bankruptcy. That is the only reason is it well-run. My mother has TRICARE as well, and it does work fine. The US postal service is a government-run entity, and is billions in the red. We don't! What makes you think we woud would need to? We have very good hospitals in England and the wait time is very short. Only one third of patients in hospital are admitted from a waiting list and the period between the decision to see a specialist (including booking and making the 1st appointment, doing tests, getting results, discussing options and getting any op or procedure) is a median 9 WEEKS and s/b less than 18 weeks. Nope. You can take the NHS to court if fails to meet its undertakings in the constitution. Also you also can take the NHS to judicial review if you think you have been treated unfairly or detrimentally. Very few do of course because the NHS actually WORKS, and works cos its mostly run by the medical profession. Government' just provides the money and sets top level priorities.
The medical profession puts patients first because they cannot gain the system by serving themselves first.

READ THE BILL - it is NOT optional when they don't allow the private insurers to take on any more subscribers after the bill is passed, & if you make changes to your existing private insurance, you're automatically knocked out of the private plan & into the public. You WON'T have a choice to pick another private insurer or get out of the public plan. You'll be fined from $1000 to $2500 per year each yr you do not participate in the "PUBLIC OPTION" . This whole healthcare thing is going down the wrong road. The solution to high health care costs is getting rid of all the trial lawyers filing frivolous suits suing doctors. Any doctor will tell you their #1 expense is insurance against this. With the threat of lawsuits gone they can lower the cost of their services. They are simply passing the cost of insurance on to the "customer". Trial lawyers are one of the biggest contributers to campaign funds though, so I don't see this happening soon.

This commercial is leaving out some important information, most people are going to keep there insurance and are not going to see any changes in their health care except lower cost because poor people will not wait to go see a doctor until the treatment is so expensive, instead the poor will get more preventive treatment which is a fraction of the cost.

I agree with cuts to military. The US budget right now has no real room for anything and needs drastic cuts. The problem is Obama wants to take those cuts and spend them elsewhere.
There is no way the US will run healthcare effeciently which will bloat costs. To the person saying it would be a 1% tax increase. It would be more like a 10% tax increase in the US for a 2% income commodity.

I think your perception is wrong. The top 5% pay 50% of the taxes in the US. Most of them are taxed around 30%, but it was way more mid last century. The problem with only taxing the rich is that it has been shown not to have an impact on increasing federal revenue as a percent of GDP, but it has decreased GDP.
The US government hasn't run a single program efficiently. They will spend atleast twice as much as they need if not 10 or sometimes even 100 times more.
