But if the film is disturbing, isn't that a good thing? After all, it has succeeded in what it set out to do. *Sigh* Roger sometimes I don't understand you.
I feel alone in LOVING "Seed Of Chucky" because it wasn't trying to be scary anymore, it was a horror comedy, and it recognized the absurdity of the situation, BTW, Ebert likes Child's Play 1 but NOT the 2nd one? That makes no sense.
@PowerGlove79 the first one wasn't as "needlessly violent" which is what seemed to bug Ebert about the 2nd one. In the original only 4 people die, and one one death of the four wasn't really relevant.
I never like horror movies, I remember when this movie was in theaters, and I was driving my car with a friend of mine to the movie theater, and when we got to the movie theater, I chickened-out, and told my friend to go see this movie, she got out of my car, and went into the theater, about an hour later, my friend came out of the movie theater, got into my car, while i was driving back, my friend told me that she didn't like this movie.
well I think that's pretty silly for Ebert to comment it's not a good film for kids, I wouldn't expect children to even watch this film so why would he?
0:44 - 1:02 Makes me feel for the kid not having his mom there to protect him like in the 1st one, which is why I say thumbs down on Child's Play 2 and thumbs up on Terminator 2.
First of all, CHUCKY LOOKS INCREDIBLE IN THE 1ST ONE! He actually looks pretty damn real! I hate how they changed the eyes and the skin and his whole face in the sequel!
I think what they were getting at here was the essential mean-spiritedness of the movie. I'm a horror fan and I loved the first Child's play (Ebert liked it too), but that one had a certain wit and humanity to it. I saw this in the theater and walked out just feeling kind of depressed. For me, not nearly as much fun as a movie about a homicidal doll should be.
@cspara, I have to agree with you, because when this was in theaters, I was driving my car with my friend, we was going to the local movie theater to see this movie, when we got there, I chickened out and told my friend to go see this movie, and tell me all about it, my friend got out of my car, and went inside the theater, about an hour and a half later, my friend came back in the car, and on our way back, my friend told me that he didn't like it, he had his eyes closed at some of the parts.
If I were Ebert, I would argue with Siskel that the children in jeopardy angle is justified in this picture, Chycky wanted to possess Andy so he could live longer, before being doomed to lie in a dolls body for the rest of his short life
Andy wins every time though, so I honestly can't see where the unjust nature lies here
@027220 This is just typical Ebert. Check out the FT13th 4 review. Guys talking about the movie sending the message of these kids having no future cause theyre getting killed. Its a horror film. The people who go to see these types of films know what to expect. Not every film needs to send a message. Dude reads to much into nothing.
First off it's an R rated movie, not for kids, two why would an adult really have a Chucky doll for themselves? Third, it's compelling because you don't know if the kid's crazy, telling the truth or just has a big imagination.
i think it was an enjoyable sequel the end was the best part and ive said before that chucky is always pretty fun to watch but i think there putting a little too much thought into this movie lol,
I totally agree with Ebert here. It's well made but repugnant. The Child's Play movies are some of the few that I would describe as "disgusting." There is something about that doll that I find utterly repulsive, especially when it bleeds or gets injured. I'm not knocking the filmmakers. I'm sure that's what they were going for. Chucky is the most terrifying monster I've ever seen. He falls 100% into the uncanny valley. Just watching him talk makes me queasy. For strong viewers only.
@lewisejackson honestly im verr senseative with movies if i see a vile ganster film or a sick alien film like district 9 disterbing thorghts and images are genraly pumped into my head and stay there for a while.but childs play 1 and 2 i did not find scary or disterbing at all i just found it funny and fun tbh i wasnt sure about watching these moive but for some reason i wanted to and im happy i did i love both the childs play moives but im looking forward to be watchinbg 3 4 and 5 :)
how vilolently abusive the doll was?! what the hell did siskel expect? did he want to see chucky as a warm heated chap picking flowers to pass the time!
I Think That Siskel Made A Good Point, I For One Am Not A Fan Of Scarey Movies, I Remember One Time, My Friend Of Mine Named Sara, Called Me On The Phone, And Told Me That She Had Just Rented This Movie, And Would I Mind Coming Over There To Watch It, So I Went Over To Her House, And At That Time, I Didn't Like It, So I Went Into The Kitchen And Watched Some Regualer TV. But Now I Know That Scarey Movies, Are Just Pretend Movies.
The first movie was good for what it was(kind of funny hearing a killer doll cuss),but the rest was crap..Bride of Chucky? Stupid and silly. What's next? Child of Chucky? Cousin of Chucky?
Ebert says that he's worried about the effect that the film might have on small children -- but it's clearly a hard R! That shouldn't even be a detractor! He made the same claim in his review of Kick-Ass, and it just doesn't make sense! Never mind what children will think of it, it's intended for adults! You wouldn't worry of the toll that Saving Private Ryan would take on kids
5. Seed of chucky- i was so pissed after watching this film. You could make Chucky's son an evil bad ass like his dad and have them 2 on a fun killing spree, but instead you have some annoying pussy who pisses his pants in some fucked up glen or glenda tribute.
@Hammersmith80 Siskel's been dead for years and fate has been pretty cruel to Ebert. Yet he still writes his reviews and does his job as a FILM CRITIC. Why don't you show some respect?
Siskel is a dumbass, acting like Alex Vincent would have been terrified by having to play this role. Alex himself said that he was never scared during the filming of the original, so why would he in the sequel? Ebert can sometimes be a douche but Siskel is always trash and wants french films stuck up his ass for eternity.
after childs play 3, it all went to hell. it wasent scary anymore, it wasent a thriller. I just hope the remake stays true to the first. Thrilling, creepy...and dont show chucky killing people right away, give the audience a chance to think that andy was the murderer just like in the first.
@michael23film After the first one the rest was never scary, suspensful maybe, scary? depends on the person. Also the first one was very obvious that Andy was not the killer and that's why they removed the idea of him being the killer from the script because it was obvious that Chucky made it and that's what bult all the suspense of the first film because although you didn't see Andy, You knew Chucky did it but he was not showing life signs yet on screen (much like the shark in JAWS). IMO.
I Remember when this movie was in theaters, my friend of mine and I was driving my car, but when we arrived at the movie theater, I chickened out, and I told my friend to see this movie, My Friend got out of my car, and went into the movie theater, about an hour and a half later, My friend came out of the movie theater, and got back in my car, and while I was driving home, my friend told me that he didn't like that movie much, he had his eyes closed on a couple of parts.
Why are they reacting so emotionally to a horror film? It's not like the kid was being horribly abused during the movie or physically or sexually abused by the doll. Yes, there is one scene where Chucky ties the kid up but it's not that bad as we know what the subject matter of the movie is. These guys acted like true bitches sometimes. Maybe they had too much sand in their vagina that day.
@EdTV20 I liked it too. I like the whole Chucky series, and I don't get how there are more entries in the Hellraiser, Amityville Horror, and Puppet Master series' than there are in the Child's Play series. I'm pretty sure this series has more fans than any of those.
well not all films are supposed to make you feel all worm inside, not all films are supposed to be politically correct, if your a true film fan you would appreciate the kind of films(horror films) that try to offer something different.that tries to make you feel uncomfortable. Isn't that one of the main purposes of a horror film? Its supposed to make you scared and uncomfortable.
I Think that Gene Siskel has a pretty good point, and I don't blame him, I too don't like movies that put children in peril, And I for one Don't even like this movie, Heck I've Even Boycotted Some of the old movies that is on the Encore channel, And I Refused to watch nither of them.
@HardikG121 I did. I was only maybe 6/7 and my grandma introduced me to the series thinking it would teach me about serial killers. Makes no sense, but I loved the movies. lol
@HardikG121 I first watched it when I was 5, but I was already capable of understanding the simpleness of this movie. I used to crack up laughing at a doll swearing his ass off.
@sidmute00 why? as a kid the only R rated movie I got to see was a few minutes of T2. My parents were pretty diligent on making sure I didn't see it to the point I didn't even feel like seeing R rated movies as a teenager causing my own parents to be shocked I had not seen some of the movie classics.
Kids only watch them at first simply because they either don't want to listen to their parents, or copy them, if you did nothing but watch R rated horror films and V-chip your kids this happens.
@BrokenFWD I watched R rated movies for none of those reasons. I watched movies because they looked interesting, just like I do now, but not because of a rating.
@BrokenFWD i wish i didn't see the movies i saw before 18 coz i'd enjoy them more now.. LOL.. i don't think kids should watch R /`18 rated movies untill they are atleast 18.. not coz i am pro-censorship but its just better that way. now we have a lots of fuckheads in the world torturing animals and shooting in schools and malls.. now thats not just a blame on movies but americas dumb fuck gun laws too. americans kids would better adjusted if america adopted better ratings and clear ones too
Ebert can be stifflingly moralistic sometimes, but if you have seen the majority of his other reviews, he has revealed that he has some brilliant observations and insight into the world of cinema. I don't agree with him all the time, but I recognize that he has the innate ability to put things into perspective better than almost any other critic out there. (I used to hate him, too.) RIP Siskel.
Ebert is such a fucking douche. I H8 him. The guy reviews and speaks of movies (and video games) like he hasn't had an ounce of fun in his whole life.
"The closing sequence of Child's Play 2 inside the toy factory is truly horrifying. It's good film-making, but it made me feel unclean and disturbed as I was watching it and I can only imagine what effect it might have on small children"
This movie wasn't made for children. It's rated R. Take that into consideration. Yeah some "critic".
that bit at the end when Chucky's crawling after Andy after he'd been covered in that melted plastic scarred the shit out of me when i was a kid. Great, horrifying visual.
I Remember driving to a local movie theater when this movie was in theaters with my friend, when we got to the movie theater, i chickened-out on going to see it, so my friend went into the movie theater to see it, about an hour or so later, my friend got out of the movie theater, got into my car, and i drove on home, and my friend told me that it was scarey, he had his eyes closed and ears covered all the way through the movie.
They're not jackasses. They happen to be very intelligent guys and know a hell a lot more about films than you do. They just didn't personally find this movie to be very entertaining.
@darkmindedsith is that the only part you read? because you keep mentioning that...so what if i called them that? roger ebert called tom green an obnoxious retard how come its ok for him to talk like that but not me??
Tom Green advertises himself AS a jackass. Even Green himself would agree with that statement. It's extremely more reasonable to call someone like Tom Green a jackass considering he makes gross, offensive, despicable comedy where he humps animals and masturbated an elephant. Anyone with an IQ of 85 would call Tom Green the same thing. You feel that these guys are jackasses merely because of the way they felt about some silly horror movie, which is far more irrational and ignorant.
@darkmindedsith i didnt say jackass i said he said obnoxious retard and dont you think that word is inappropriate and disrespectful towards children that have special needs and theyre parents? i name call and its not cool but "mature and intellegent" when they do? lol
What do you mean "If Ebert doesn't like horror movies"? He does.
Yes, horror films are supposed to be disturbing and scary, but they are also supposed to be entertaining and both and them just didn't have a lot of fun watching it.
"Effect on small children"???? Ebert......THIS IS NOT FOR KIDS....PARENTS SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT THEIR KIDS WATCH INSTEAD OF BLAMMING ANYTHING ELSE.
@tommynicks, well i have to say that I don't blame siskel, because i too didn't like this movie very well, i remember a friend of mine rented this movie at a local movie rental place, and my friend invited me to watch this, and during the last two seconds of the movie, i told my friend that i was going to the other room to watch tv, and i got up and left, while my friend was still watching the movie. so i have to say i don't blame him.
Ok, I just want to make one thing clear, I'm not a big fan of horror movies, but i remember i had to drive a friend of mine named Sarah, to a local movie theater to see this when it was in theaters, I had to wait in the car, while my friend, Sarah went into the theater, about an hour later, she came back, and was feeling a lil scared, and she told me that she doesn't like the movie. and i told her not to go see it.
I agree with Roger Ebert. I watched the movie, and I though it was very scary, but depressing. I did, however like it. The climax was very scary, but it was fun.
same thing happened with a nightmare on elm street. scary as hell when it first came out, but movies dont scare anyone anymore. they add comedy to the mix, cause they r all pretty ridiculous now.
wonder if ebert would re review any movies cuz i saw this review and it tripped me out cuz he gave The Devils Rejects a thumbs up......just sayin

EdTV20 1 year ago 6

I think Siskel never liked horrorfilms.

I Think that Gene Siskel has a pretty good point, and I don't blame him, I too don't like movies that put children in peril, And I for one Don't even like this movie, Heck I've Even Boycotted Some of the old movies that is on the Encore channel, And I Refused to watch nither of them.
DimeraFan28 1 year ago
Why the hell would small children want to watch it anyway?
HardikG121 1 year ago 11
@HardikG121 I did. I was only maybe 6/7 and my grandma introduced me to the series thinking it would teach me about serial killers. Makes no sense, but I loved the movies. lol
Deadbirdcheese 1 year ago
@HardikG121 I first watched it when I was 5, but I was already capable of understanding the simpleness of this movie. I used to crack up laughing at a doll swearing his ass off.

@HardikG121 I think he meant the Andy character.

BTW, kids watch R rated movies. Hate to break that to you guys.
sidmute00 1 year ago 3
@sidmute00 why? as a kid the only R rated movie I got to see was a few minutes of T2. My parents were pretty diligent on making sure I didn't see it to the point I didn't even feel like seeing R rated movies as a teenager causing my own parents to be shocked I had not seen some of the movie classics.
Kids only watch them at first simply because they either don't want to listen to their parents, or copy them, if you did nothing but watch R rated horror films and V-chip your kids this happens.
BrokenFWD 1 year ago
@BrokenFWD I watched R rated movies for none of those reasons. I watched movies because they looked interesting, just like I do now, but not because of a rating.
sidmute00 1 year ago

(I used to hate him, too.) RIP Siskel.
sidmute00 1 year ago
You can tell Ebert really wants to like this movie, as he does, and as he did with the original.

Yeah your right horror films are suppose to be disturbing and scary!! These guys are jackasses
smoketunes 1 year ago
@smoketunes
They're not jackasses. They happen to be very intelligent guys and know a hell a lot more about films than you do. They just didn't personally find this movie to be very entertaining.
darkmindedsith 1 year ago
@darkmindedsith what makes their opinion better than mines?
smoketunes 1 year ago
@smoketunes
Maybe because they are mature and intelligent about it, while you say crap like "These guys are jackasses".
darkmindedsith 1 year ago
@darkmindedsith is that the only part you read? because you keep mentioning that...so what if i called them that? roger ebert called tom green an obnoxious retard how come its ok for him to talk like that but not me??
smoketunes 1 year ago
@smoketunes
You feel that these guys are jackasses merely because of the way they felt about some silly horror movie, which is far more irrational and ignorant.
darkmindedsith 1 year ago
@darkmindedsith i didnt say jackass i said he said obnoxious retard and dont you think that word is inappropriate and disrespectful towards children that have special needs and theyre parents? i name call and its not cool but "mature and intellegent" when they do? lol
smoketunes 1 year ago
If Ebert doesn't like horror movies, HE SHOULD AT LEAST UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DISTURBING AND SCARY!!!
Keeponrockin404 1 year ago
@Keeponrockin404
What do you mean "If Ebert doesn't like horror movies"? He does.
Yes, horror films are supposed to be disturbing and scary, but they are also supposed to be entertaining and both and them just didn't have a lot of fun watching it.

tommynicks 1 year ago

Wtf? It's sick? Fucking pussies. Sure, it's not a masterpiece, but it is an effective and at times great horror film.
And fuck children. Not enough of those little bastards get killed in movies.

@HattedMovieReviewer actually i've noticed that children seem to like this film a lot so siskel and ebert are kind of being wimps.
my proof is that i have cousins who are 3-5 and love this movie and are not even scared nor have any other kids been scared by it
marupage83 9 months ago
I agree with Roger Ebert. I watched the movie, and I though it was very scary, but depressing. I did, however like it. The climax was very scary, but it was fun.
