NOW HERE'S THE MAN that makes MUSIC with his drums. I like K Moon but not that drum solo with the gold fish in his drum---NOT music!!! Tommy Aldridge & J Bonham I think are similar in some respects - that's why I combine the solos . YouTube search
"IBEW bro-Tommy Aldrige UP & Moby Dick Zeppelin Black Sabbath drum solo by-definition"
If I want technical, I can turn on my computer and get a computerized drum beat...what you find in many of today's pop song. I want style, feeling and originality...I want Bonham.
For a dude who's self taught alot of his chops are of the same caliber as Buddy Rich, listen to some big band solo's with Rich and Krupa going back and forth(drum battles)Bonzo possessed alot of the technical abilities these "drum legends"had and I make no disrespect about Krupa or Rich and am not compairing Bonham to them, just pointing out some similarities between a self taught on pots and pans lad from England and two of the most wellknown drummers considered to be 2 of the best ever.
Do you know what really bothers me? When people say there's more technically skilled drummers now days and they can't even appreciate someone who was so uniquely awesome as Mr. Bonham! As a musician myself, I know there's much more to real "music" than technical ability alone! A unique style that stands out and is different from others, is worth MORE than the most technical playing in the world. It's true that Bonham had BOTH! and his style is still unmatched by any drummer even today!
@guitarttimman I agree. personally, it is not technical skill which a drummer good, it is how musical his playing is. I am saying this without previous bias, as i have just been introduced to these musicians, but Bonham's playing blows most out of the water with how truly musical it is, including Max Roach, whose playing i just found pretentious. Bonham is of the few drummers whose drum solos i could listen to as music on its own.
@guitarttimman I bought a tuition DvD from Steve Smith and he had a whole section dedicated to Bonham. A guy with the technical expertise that puts hookers out of the blowing minds business felt it appropriate to dedicate (I forget how long) of his tuition dvd to the beats of Bonham.
I came to You Tube looking for Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich videos, and one thing led to another! John Bonham was in their league! Thanks for these videos!
@bluesmama100 Hey, Predator1rising! I hate to disagree with a fellow music-lover but Gene Krupa started it all in the 40s. He was the first drummer to actually make the drums a solo instrument, instead of a guy sitting in the back of the percussion section. But I agree that John Bonham was among the absolute greatest of all time!
@Predator1rising Yeah, well, if you're bad, it's only in a "good" way, my friend! Thanks for your gracious reply, and I hope we can talk again some time! You have GREAT taste in music! Take care, Babe!
Led Zepplin (with Jon Bonham!) will go down in history as one of the best Rock n Roll bands with supremacyin literary composition. They have yet to be matched.... #epic
@pkatti12 Yeah. I had read that he thought about it, but Jones talked him out of it saying something like he could do more with 1 pedal than most guys could with 2.
John Bonham made drum heads out of Chuck Norris' ass cheeks...maracas out of his nuts...a cow bell out of his skull...a set of vibes out of his rib bones and drum sticks of his out of Leg bones...and a set of chimes out of his teeth
@RedDonegan ...i think it was that tall glass of beer that he always had standing next to his drum set that gave him his power (see "Moby Dick" drum solo at Royal Albert Hall), after a 20 min jam he just pulls out a glass of beer.....what a badass.
@ 2:19, that looked like Nick Mason from Pink Floyd. Actually, I think it is him. Noticed the double bass drums as Bonzo never played the double bass drums and it looks the drum set Mason played.
i have not seen a post that refers to "Bonzo's Montreaux" from the post breakup release of "Coda". Outstanding solo! He was the single greatest hard rock drummer of his time.
GOD I FUCKIN LOVE LED ZEPPELIN. jpj is sooo talented. he can play a fuck load of instruments. and jimmy page's incredible guitar work. both on electric and acoustic. john bonham is jesusing the shit out of his drums, while plant makes girls cum with his voice. best band ever, fucking period.
@HulkWhenAngry Couldn't have said it better myself , I have been telling everyone who will listen the same thing for a long ass time , a band that should have been standing the test of time like the Stones ..... 60 some yrs old, I think Mick Jagger is like 67, { correct me if I'm wrong } and still in concertt all over the world, Led Zeppelin would have made it longer and done it better , Best fuckin' Rock N Roll Band EVER " fucking Period " ;)
he was one of the best in his day but would be pretty average in this day and age.. Danny Carey does it for me.. guys like Joey Jordison are a dime a dozen..
i dunno he just doesnt do anything that really blows my mind. im a drummer as well and i can play everything he plays. look up tony royster jr or vadrum on youtube; those are the kinds of drummers that blow my mind.
@mjw9363 About the single kicks...what does having 2 pedals have to do ANYTHING about playing in odd time sigs? Mike Portnoy plays in odd time sigs, along side of nearly EVERY >Talented< metal band (and some not metal ones to) with double pedals. And whats the difference between playing a stupid time sig, and playing insanely fast? Joey Jordison (YES I KNOW THERES BETTER DRUMMERS FLAMEWHORES) isn't as complex, Bonham isn't as fast...its all opinion, grow up.
ok i'll just go listen to some GOOD drummers lol! i came across this video without an opinion but after watching it i realized its not good! so yea you enjoy your "excellent" music while i listen to much better stuff
@trane101 - Just in case you didn't know, i bet nearly all of these "good" drummers you like to listen to, see Bonham as a huge inspiration and only wish they could be as half as GOOD as he was!
If you want to be a legend - play an instrument on tour away from your loved ones in spite of all your instincts, play better than your heroes, then above everything else, die young!!
@andi6696 John didn't overdose - he drank 40+ measures of vodka, fell asleep and choked to death on his own vomit! He bequeathed his position with Led Zeppelin to Jason - I can't imagine a greater gift!
If ya did not know him personally you cant say a thing cause you just dont know the whole truth of this performer father and yes he was wild on the road cause he missed his family it finally got to that point and what happend to him can happen to anyone who has one night of over drinkinf and vomiting in your sleep while you are totally smashed it was a terrible accident
"He drank himself to death willfully leaving behind a widow and son. That is despicable." "They arent my go to guys on parenting and living advice.' ? What ?
I read it exactly as you intended...You pass judgment on someone you never met. and what are you a "go to" for...? you clearly have absolute strangers all figured out & you seem a little intoxicated with yourself... Walk a mile in someone's shoes...Really man no hostility..and I'm Chilax for a living
There is no comparison between Moon and Bonham, they shouldn't be compared, Bonham is out of Moons league. Both were self-taught at the same time and yet Bonham has technique comparable to that of a modern-day highly disciplined drummer, whereas Moon couldn't even hold his sticks. Look up one of Moons solo's on youtube, there's only 2 ever recorded, both of them are him trying to be technical and emulate the work of Bonham, and he does so unsuccessfully. Compare Bonham and Peart not him and Moon

John Bonham is not only the greatest rock drummer; he is the greatest player of any instrument in a rock-and-roll context.
The greatest rock musician is the dude who has the most rock and roll coming out of his instrument. So that leaves us with him, and Bo Diddley.
