Thanks for capturing the slides and screen. So many of the tech talks just show the speaker so you can't figure out what the graph they're talking about must look like.
I believe the author was implying that hardware testing was automatically generated, (since the designs are entered electronically, software can generate test vectors, scan data, etc.) This isn't the whole point of the video, but one of the premises it was making. Automatic execution is different from automatic testcase generation. A lot of hardware design validation is performed using custom firmware/software, written by people.
Actually, the main point here is that automated testing for hardware is much further advanced than automated testing for software. Little hardware testing is still done manually, while that is the case for software testing, i.e. much software testing is still done in a manual fashion.
One premise is false for hardware testing. Often, hardware companies design a great deal of custom firmware/software to validate hardware designs/modules/systems.
You might have misunderstood the premise. Hardware testing is done rarely in a manual fashion anymore, while a large percentage of software testing is still done in a manual fashion.
Excellent presentation - will look into some of the tools listed. Great idea to use open source for an automated testing framework. Want to learn more about FireEye.

I don't think I'd trust them to test my software for me.
