I really like ur projects... but 2 questions: 1) how much power is the whole equipment use? 2) can u contrll all the lights in the apartment over the PDA? if yes... is it over WAP or Bluetooth or anythign else?
1) The system uses around 20W in idle mode, if a alarm is active or something it's a little higher. The apartment lights does not draw power from the Rack, it has it's own power supply or runs on 220V.
2) Yes you can, the system runs on a linux server with webserver. On the servers paralell port is a I/O module, using PHP one can execute shell commands that changes the status of the I/O module. Using WAP one can access this controll webpage from a cell phone, or a PDA.

Aren't u considered about security?
Some servers have serious security holes..
Someone could put ur lights on when ur not home and make u big electricitybill.. :/
