The chimps are initially shown the test by humans. On this test the numbers are not blocked out. The instructor must repeatedly show the chimp the correct order of the numbers 1-9 even if they appear in different positions. It usually only takes 6 or 7 attempts before the chimp undstands the order in which to touch the numbers. They encourage the chimp to do the test correctly my making a treat come out of the machine each time it gets the numbers correct.
