. When the Giant was built, it had the tallest lift hill on any wooden coaster in the world, with a vertical drop of 143 feet. The original structure contained 900,000 board feet of lumber, 1,220 concrete piers and 81,000 bolts. The estimated total cost to construct the Texas Giant was five and half million dollars. It was awarded the Golden Ticket for the best wooden coaster in the world in 1999.they are going to put the red train in a museum
Look how pretty the wood was! I moved here to Texas back in '97 when I was 11 and this was my 2nd wooden coaster at the time. (First being Cyclone - SFOG). I gotta tell you, this was a legend. I'm gonna miss this beast, but with the way the construction has shaped up with the "New" Texas Giant, I may have a new favorite coming soon!
im frum nj n i went 2 texas this summer n wen i went they wer working on renovating this. i got on pretty much evry roller coaster besides this (obviously)...batman the ride(cuz ive been on it at sfga) n mr.freeze cuz wen we wer next in line they closd it down cuz apparently ther was lightning withi n 25 miles. i didnt wana get outa line n im SOOOOOOOOOOOO pissed i cudnt go on it -_-
@sanchezblackwolf Weak is the LAST thing I'd call this ride... Of course, if that is what you meant with your lackluster spelling... Never heard of "stroids" before.
@fivedollerfootlong Have you even ridden it? In 1999 it was ranked as the #1 wooden roller coaster and is just about one of the most relentless rides in existence...
I really don't understand the bad publicity this ride gets. Yeah, it's kind of rough, but it's a wooden coaster. That's what it's supposed to do. Even in its old age this coaster is still in marvelous working condition. Sure, it jumps around quite a bit, but they're closing it for a season and revamping it to hush up all you three year old girls out there who can't handle a real roller coaster.
P.S.
I was there four days ago and rode it twice and enjoyed every second of it.
@ParasiticDaemon Actually they're doing it because the ride was raping itself and was costing more and more in maintenance each year. So instead of totally demolishing one of their star attractions, they went for a refurbishment that will reduce the maintenance cost of the ride as well as renew interest in it.
@ParasiticDaemon Wooden rollercoasters should be bumpy, but not as bumpy as mean streak and texas giant. Thats just not normal for a wooden rollercoaster.
O MY GOD plz dont anybody get on this ride ever!!!!!! it hurts so bad!!!! i puked like twice and i had a headache and it rattled me around all over the place! i had bruises form this ride! they SOOOO need to shut it down!! its hurt a lot of ppl and its so old!i wouldnt tear it down tho cuz its so special but i would shut it down
mleiwas111: That's what virtually all wooden coasters are like, genius. They are meant to be rough, and most people enjoy it, unlike you. Majority rules.
No, genius. Not all wooden coasters are like that. They are meant to be fun and out of control and maybe just a little "rough", and if you rode the ride in 1990 and then rode it now, then you would understand that. This ride comes from a family famous for getting super rough in their senior years.
I believe mleiws111 said that because she didn't know that wooden coasters were supposed to be rough (even a little rough). The way she said it. "its hurt a lot of ppl" etc.
Like Ghostrider in CA, I just think it's too rough. I mean, I love wooden coasters, but I generally don't think them being "rough" is a pre-requisite. El Toro is my fav. woodie for sure, and it is smoother than many steel coasters. But it still feels fast, and out-of-control, and it's got tons of airtime. And it doesn't hurt at all.
But Six Flags just announced a major refurb for this thing, which is awesome.
chainrider: Also, you'd be surprised how many people don't know that they're supposed to be bumpy. I've heard complaints on all sorts of woodies, in person. I've told the people that they're supposed to be bumpy, and then they go all out on "then they need to tear it down cuz it sux and it will fall apart".
its to scary its as pain full as *** now this is from when it was new last time i road it a kid dislocated his shoulder plus this is a mounted camera. *only rid once in life for your own health*
THIS video looks very familiar. I think it's from an old cool vid on a montage about popular coasters (ie: Mamba, Viper, texas giant, magnum, etc). Right? :] I hope it's online somewhere...
Brilliant layout and track shaping!

chainrider: My favorite wooden coasters are Voyage and the Boss. However, Boss is extremely painful in the back seat.
