I find this intimidating because I can't find a pattern. for instance, " U " and " E " plus " KU " and " KE " there is nothing repetitive. nothing that says to me, If I hear "K" it will always look like this"__?___" so I can't just learn a symbol for a sound and then just intuitively put together two sound to make one. K looks different throughout the vowels. the vowels do seem to have some repetition through the consonants, but only enough to make it more confusing. any tips on memorization?
Hey there Sarutahiko1! I noticed you have the same Kanji cards as me and i was wondering what your study habits are with them? I have been doing ten cards at a time but i feel like its kinda slow due to how many kanji there are and all that. So are there a certain number you go for a week or month? Just curious thanks for your help. (^_^)(\)
Im confused on the usage. Say a person is writing something(essay, letter, email etc) would they be writing in kanji, hiragana or katakana? or are all three used at the same time?
thanks for the comment! what is being written matters to a degree, but in general the same words will be written with the same alphabet regardless of what is being written (letter, essay, poem) ... within reason.
in other words, ice cream will always be written in katakana, whereas "justice" will always be written in kanji, etc.
Kanji are hieroglyphs in Japanese with Chinese origins, yes? The Japanese took them and modified to suit their language and culture.
My question is - why do a good chunk of kanji retain their original Chinese meaning? Also, how is it that some kanji (ex: uma, kuru) have adopted the abbreviated script developed in China in the last century, if the Japanese stopped borrowing kanji centuries ago?
Every kanji has two readings, kum-yomi and on-yomi, the first is the japanese reading adapted from the chinese and the second is the chinese one (the sound is written in katakana).
Well the first inhabitants of the Japanese isles weren't asiabn lokoing people, they were in fact blue eyed, blonde haired northern people (most likely coming from what is now modern day Russia.)
The first "Japanese" came from China, bring their language and culture which eventually developed due to isolation from the mainland - Japan's culture, people and language developed differently.
Thats a part of the reason why Japan uses Kanji - characters form china which wre it origional script.
the people from the north, 弥生, were not the first people. this is still evident today with the distinct differences in peoples such as the ainu. japanese was already used before it had a script, hence the kunyomi and for the main part kanji was introduced by scholars ect who went to study in china.
漢字 were from China, yes, but Japanese developed exclusivley the Hiragana and Katakana scripts for use in Japanese. Japan's rich culture even had the Japanese make up their own 漢字 which go (officially) by a different name but still referred to as "'kan'-ji" even though they didnt come from china but origionated in Japan. ;)
It´s great that youre helping us to see the japanese idiome, and that you use your time doing that, i´m Mexican. And watching you i can practise my english and learn japanese at the same time, so, i hope you do more videos to learn. Thanks.

QUESTION (and apologies for any ignorance)
Kanji are hieroglyphs in Japanese with Chinese origins, yes? The Japanese took them and modified to suit their language and culture.
My question is - why do a good chunk of kanji retain their original Chinese meaning? Also, how is it that some kanji (ex: uma, kuru) have adopted the abbreviated script developed in China in the last century, if the Japanese stopped borrowing kanji centuries ago?

Kanji: Idiograms, each depicting a thing or idea. Come from China, some origionated in Japan. Used very frequently. There exists in Japan 1965.
Katakana: Japanese alphabetical system. Developed as a shorthand of kanji. Today used for foreign words and/or phrases. Looks very angular ('sharp')
Hiragana: Japanese alphabetical system. Used for Japanese words and phrases. Looks comparitavley curvy.
