Jaco Pastorius,Syd Barrett and The Pink Floyd from 60's,Deep Purple - mark II,Miles Davis,The Prodigy,Chemical Brothers,Akira Ifukube(guy, who wrote music for Godzilla movies),John Wiliams(Star Wars music)....they all fixed in my brain and turn to my style of using guitar.all these artists turn in my melodys and notes.this is unbelivable how to listening music of those different musicians inspire me...thanks to them i have thousands of melodys, sounds and notes in my head and play on my bass.
Jaco Pastorius opened up the electric bass, particularly fretless bass, to its true heart and soul just as Luigi Boccherini did for the cello. Unfortunately he suffered from Manic Depressive disease just as Mozart, Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky. And regardless of what Pat Metheny said there are several bass players who may be in their own right as good as Jaco was. For Hendrix it is McLaughlin, Holdsworth, Vai, Johnson and Keaggy- and others.
Thank you so much for compiling this. I'm not a musician but I am a visual artist and I'd say I have a sensitive ear, the first time I heard Jaco I was mesmerized by him. No matter who he played with including Weather Report I usually just focus on what he was playing. To me he was the Rembrant of the bass. Listening to all these tributes to Jaco just confirms my first impression, he is one of the greatest musicians ever.
Jaco changed my life... He not only changed the way I see music and art in general but also he changed me as human being... Jaco was just something else no words can describe...
If Jaco had his way, he would not wish his killer to burn in hell... It wasn't in him. Hate is not something he believed in, ever. Please don't waste your time hating and instead find a way to honor him productively.
@Hakulanni Even if he didint wish him to burn in hell I think Jaco who seems like a conservative and smart person would not want this guy running around posing a threat to others so save up the pussy talk. Murderers deserve death, they serve no purpus in life.
@Jack458111 - I watched this tribute to Jaco and got caught up in the fervor and the passion of the interviewees and then I read your comment, which rather startled me out of the Jaco spell. Your insight reminded me of a few years ago when a "crazy" homeless guy played his bashed up guitar for me. He was all over the fretboard, playing nutty and bizarre runs, then he'd settle into a rationale and sublime bit of riffing. I realized that he was either nuts, or a genius.
I disagree with pat. There are thousands of people out there who could be jacos but pats mentality restricts them. The best bassist in the world has probably never touched a bass (they have never been given the chance).
@Jack458111 I interpreted his comment a little differently. There's a difference between doing your own thing, and trying to be a carbon copy. I mean, Jaco gives a lot to be inspired by, but why be a replica? I think by saying people need to move on, he means those other bassists should explore their own new ground. It's not like Jaco's playing is/was the only way to be innovative on an electric bass.
Have to agree with Pat Metheny. No one will ever do what Jaco did in terms of bass technique, tone, creativity and composition. There are other amazing bassists but they don't quite measure up to Jaco's standards, no offense to any of them. Some of them are arguably better at one or two aspects but none can match him in all aspects.
The man was a tortured genius! Oh, how I wish he had made it beyond his 30's to see what might have been. Still, he "open the door" to others and remains the GATEWAY to a new vision of electric bass. No other bass player since has made that kind of impression.

There's bass BEFORE Jaco and there's bass AFTER Jaco - it's that simple. RIP bro - a true inspiration to every musician, not just bass players...
