They used to take us here as kids, from the late 1960's to 1981, when I got my license and then I went almost every summer. From 1989-1995, me and my wife were here every weekend, having a blast, riding rides, rollercoasters etc!! Such cool memories! Going to go back and visit soon. I still live in the same place, in New Jersey, 40 miles from it!
hahahaa!!!! dude wildwood is the fuckin bomb! the tram car is so damn funny when it says "watch the tram car please" !! haha! ah..good times good times(:
wow i almost forgot about all those rides used to go there eery summer w/the family. i used to be so freaked out about oing the walk through in draculas castle shame they took that down it was such a landmark there
I miss Hunt's Pier, Castle Dracula, and the lost dark rides. Most everything in this video is gone. About over 100 motels were razed for condos between 2002-2006. A few restaurants closed, too and razed Captain's Table, Duffinetti's, Wildwood Diner. Some of the motel signs were saved and on display at the doo-wop museum. I was at WW at least 4 times in the early 80's, and Aug 95, June 96, June 98.
Wow...does that bring back memories. I have been going to WW every year since 1971. I haven't gone the past few years. I miss HUNT'S PIER!! I heard Morey's is trying to save the GOLDEN NUGGET mine ride??
WOW! That's how I remember Wildwood as a kid. It's still an awesome place but I wish my kids could have experienced Hunt's Pier - that was my favorite. Thanks for sharing those memories!:)
It is (was) a combination of a classic "Dark Ride" or ride-through haunted house and roller coaster. It is a one of a kind, designed and built as a unique piece for Hunt's Amusement Pier, exclusively. It was the absolute best dark ride I've ever seen.
Check this out, someone actually has video on YouTube of the inside of the Golden Nugget! I can't link it but it's called "wildwood boardwalk 1986". Totally awesome nostalgia.
hunts pier was the best the golden nugget, keystone cops, the pirate ship, the log flume, the old west shooting gallery... it's all been down hill since then.
I worked Mariners Landing in 82 and 83 on the Himalaya Ride called the Disco Express, there were two Himalaya's on the pier, mine was the one with the swinging cars next to the small roller coaster.
Indeed they were. We had a trailer in a campground 5 min. away from Sea Isle City and I spent my summers along the Jersey seaboard. I'd comb the beach for shells at the crack of dawn and sell them to shell shops, and use the money for rides & games. They were truly the best days of my life. I go back once in awhile but things just aren't the same. The Jersey seaboard in the 80's/early 90's were the place to be. Every night was the best of my life... until the next day.
Wow what memories of my youth.....god I remmber when all the piers were in water at high tide and you could spend the entire night on the boards for 2 bucks
The Flyer, Keystone Kops, Whacky Shack, Jungleland, the Golden Nugget, the Pirate Ship, the old Haunted House and the Jumbo Jet! Holy cow, the memories this brings back of Hunt's and Morey's Piers back in the 70s and 80s! Thanks for posting it!
We spent a few weeks in Wildwood every summer when I was growing up so it's like a home away from home for me. I don't get down there as much as I'd like to anymore, but I was in Cape May yesterday so I popped over for about an hour to get some Laura's Fudge and some rum water ice from the Lime Ricky place (best water ice flavor ever and the only place you can get it!), and just walking around on the boards I got all nostalgic, which is how I wound up here - thanks again for posting this :)
My family and I just bought a home down in Wildwood!!!!! We bought a real home, not one of those condos that have been springing up for the past 5 years. I love it there. So many good restaurants on and off the Boardwalk. The best place to get pancakes is at Samuel's Pancake House at 17th & Surf Avenues. But when you ride down Surf Ave now, all the motels that made Wildwood special are gone, all replaced by condos that nobody wants to buy.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been going to Wildwood every summer since I was 3 mos old. I am a mom now and my huband and we take our own kids there. I think it's the greatest place on Earth! Who needs Disney World when you have Wildwood???
Actually Wildwood is number 10 on the list of the best amusements parks after Disney ( you learn this when you work for the pier at Moreintation as they call it)
Who remembers the Haunted House on Morey's Pier? It's at the end of this video. It existed between 1972-1984. They tore it down when they built the Zoom Phloom in 1985. I rememeber seeing it at night in the early 80's but didn't go in. We rode Dante's instead. Also who remembers Castle Frankenstein on Fun Pier? It burned in Aug 1984 after being closed for two years.
The haunted House at the old "end" of Moresy's was the absolute best in Wildwood. They changed it up from year to year to make it different. It was a complete walk-through at your own pace and was awesome!
I really like the shots of the old rides. Do you by chance have a video of Wildwood's old Himalaya ride from the 70's and 80's? That would be cool!!! 8-)
I operated the "Disco Express" Himalaya ride on Mariners Landing during the summers of 1982 and part of 1983. I have no video of these rides, sadly. There is another Wildwood video on youtube dated 1986 which shows 2 different Himalayas, one from Morey's and one from Hunts (I think).
This is wonderful, thank you for posting it. I went there every summer with my folks from 1976 to '84. I remember the Poseiden Adventure ride that became the Planet Of The Apes ride that became the Star Wars ride, none of which were officially licensed! The 70s were such an inncoent time.
Yeah, that's too bad about those old great rides. I've been going there since 67, and my parents have been going since 1960. Maybe, but probably not, they could build the old rides again, and put them on a pier and call it Wildwood of Yesteryear or something. Do you think that would boost tourism there a bit, maybe. Good to see you, rwk360, I've bid with on ebay auctions, and spoke with you im's. Take care e1
Yeah like the fire that ended Brigantine Castle,Or Dracula's castle, or even Rino's Pizza. Guarantee it was all arson. Great video. I have some old home movies from the 70's when I was a kid at wildwood boardwalk. I'll try to post them.
I was just there last weekend. The only custome ride which remains is the shell of the Golden Nugget. All the rest are gone from Jungleland to the Paul Bunyan Flume.. My hope is they are keeping the Nugget to someday restore her. But for some reason, sonce it's so tall, I think it only survives due to the cost to demolish. Wouldn't surprise me to hear of a suspicious fire some winter... :(
I was there between 1980-1983 with my father who passed away Mar. 1986, and again between 1995-1998 with my mom and her friend. I was at Hunt's Pier! It was the best! They had great custom dark rides. I rode the Golden Nugget, Pirate Ship and others. I wish they didn't tear down the Whacky Shack. It was a Bill Tracy classic built in 1964. It was gone by 1996. Dark in the park has lots of stuff about Castle Dracula which bunred 2002. That was also one of my favorites.
Oh, btw, Vince Kostek the former manager of Hunt's Pier from 1957 until late 1985 when it was sold passed away this June 11. He helped build many of the rides you see in the video including the Flyer roller coaster which was torn down 1989 along with the Jungleland, Pirate Ship and the train ride and mini cars under the Flyer. That was a big mistake the new owner made, tearing down half the rides.
It's really sad to see those classic rides go away! Especially the one of a kind ones. Someone should begin a campaign to save the Golden Nugget Mine Ride! Call the politicians! Call New Jersey 101.5 the Jersey Guys! Someone has to help restore this wonderful ride!!!
The owners of Morey's Piers are trying to relocate and reopne the Golden Nugget. It has been in the works for about two years now.Let's hope it goes thru
AW NO WAY KEYSTONE KOPS! My dad tells me about that all the time....Whacky Shack...Jungleland...THE GOLD NUGGET RIIIIDE! I remember that. Course by the time I got there it was all....Dinosaur-y and stuff. WHOO the pirate ship....and oh my god you even got the haunted house. It would be SO AWESOME if all that stuff was there nowadays.....
Ya im going down and unfortunately staying at a motel. Oh well its still 1 block from the beach.Wildwood is the best. I hate the tram car though i wonder what they would do if you just stood there lol.
You're a yung person - what do you think of how the boardwalk used to look 20 or 30 years ago compared to today? It's more like Six-Flags today but with more alcohol! (Not that you would do anything involving alcohol, abd you shouldn't... grow up first)
I will be back in August for a little vacation also. I rented a condo in the heart of things 1 block from the beach and will be gathering there with a bunch of friends from all over the country! Wildwood is an awesome place! I'll also be there next monday to finalize some details.
cool stuff, huh? I vacationed there from 1965 until last week, so far. I worked on Mariner's Landing in the summers of 1982 and 83 as a DJ on the "Disco Express" bobsled ride which was just west (toward the boardwalk) of the rollercoaster.
Hunt's pier was 1 of a kind. Never dupicated
