the emerald city isnt really emerald! It is an illusion put on by green tinted glasses that in the original book states that the wizard makes anyone that enters the city wear green tinted glasses, that "helps dim the radience of the emeralds" the city is actually bronze

@kakashidemon321 Magic ;) No, seriously, I think they used food colouring or jelly mix. There's a commentary with an Oz expert on the 4-disc DVD. Also, if you look closely, you can see Jack Haley have difficulty getting down from the carriage at 0:35. Bert Lahr and an extra help him get down. Poor guy.
