This "hypnotism" is a natural thing that occurs when the rabbit becomes so scared that they play dead - it's a defense mechanism.
That is exactly what this animal is doing.. it's a short-term reversible paralysis which can be readily induced in susceptible ‘prey species’ but is far from a calm experience - it is stressful and harmful to the rabbits. It used to be an advocated practice until they found how harmful it is to them. inform yourself. Ugh.
@LoveLossHurtz Why would you breed rabbits? A) It's not like they're in short supply B) There are plenty of homeless rabbits that could take the homes of the those that you are producing on purpose.
I tried doing this to my rabbit to sex him, as per a website's advice, and it didn't work. I was kicked in the face when I leaned in close. Now, though, I know that it actually harms the rabbits to do this to them. So I'm now very grateful that I did it wrong, even though I got kicked in the face. My bunny doesn't deserve that shit. :[
Please DO NOT do this, it is not hypnosis or trancing, it is a fear induced state called tonic immobility.
There was a scientific study carried out at Edinburgh University which measured cortisol levels (stress hormone) in rabbits in this state. The study showed the cortisol levels were high in all the rabbits in the study. They are in a state of terror!
I would do this with my rabbit and i thought it was funny and cute until i found out that in fact there spine gets blood cut off through it which in terms practically is choking the poor like wabbit. i stopped after i found out this information..... please do so the same!!!
@Ahooper11 lol when i try to do this with my rabbit she squirms around so yeah lol its sorda impossible to do this to her because shes cute, NOT CUDDLY
My bun boy kinda get like this. when I pet his head - I never tried putting him on his back, though....that's an idea. I love petting his hind hoppers and the only way I can is when he is in a trance. I'm gonna have to try this so I can pet his adorable white belly. TY for the video and the great idea!
0:16 he was like 'the light! its to bright!!' and he was not playing dead, SOME rabbits like being in a deep relaxation trance. they find it very relaxing.. my bunny wont let me do it 2 him! check out ma vids like Charlie eating cabbage
Actually hes not scared. You can actually put them to sleep doing that, its something that happens naturally in their bodies. Theres nothing wrong with it.
Incorrect. I've never actually heard of rabbits "playing possum" before. Ever.
Rabbits, for the most part, run. That is their evolutionary strategy. Thats how they survive. They are fast little animals to catch at full throttle.
I believe putting them on their back has some of the same effect as rolling sharks onto their backs, or of putting blindfolds on a deer and wrapping it up; or rubbing the nose of some humans actually causes them to yawn. The body had many reactions not fully studied.
