You cant compare UK & US performance in the Iraq & Afghan wars as we had different strategies.
America's method was more like Vietnam & gulf war tactics. And the UK was using Northern Ireland Tactics in Sangin and had worked alot better than America did in the Korengal Valley.

We've had a 1 KIA per every 30 WIA since Marjah on company level. Fatalties and light casualties arent the same shit, on top of everything else, we turned the tide. We didnt sit around for 4 yrs loosing ground, our strategy was offensive.

US troops eventuly took over parts of Helamand and tore down British bases/posts saying the Brits were doing it wrong......they then realised the Brits had it rite and they needed those bases/posts re built. They tore down almost 8yrs worth of UK work then realised they needed it!

Well spoken Sir. There needs to be much clearer reasoning why we are in Afghanistan. Without a clear cut goal of what we are trying to achieve makes it ;1) very difficult for the ground forces 2) very difficult for the tax paying public to understand what and why 3) more difficult to bridge gaps with the rest of the Moslem world. I believe the ground troops are doing a great job. Without their presence Afghanistan would deteriorate into a very bloody civil war again.
The question is Britain had to do do the job with 4000 troops in 2005 because of Iraq, which they now realise they need thousands more for as is happening now- which Britain could not provide alone. There was nothing wrong with British counter insurgency policy in terms of the concept- because the US is now copying it. The problem was about troop numbers needed to do the job in Afghanistan. Don't be blaming the British military, blame the politicians on both sides.

Now the US is in Helmand too, they're beginning to realise that it's not as easy as they made out. You cant compare UK & US performance in the Iraq & Afghan wars as we had different strategies.
America's method was more like Vietnam & gulf war tactics. And the UK was using Northern Ireland Tactics in Sangin and had worked alot better than America did in the Korengal Valley.

@Sturmmann Well the US couldnt capture the toughest part "Helmand Province" so asked the British to capture it...the British captured it and held it for years...but admitted they couldnt go any further.
US troops eventuly took over parts of Helamand and tore down British bases/posts saying the Brits were doing it wrong......they then realised the Brits had it rite and they needed those bases/posts re built. They tore down almost 8yrs worth of UK work then realised they needed it!

Well spoken Sir. There needs to be much clearer reasoning why we are in Afghanistan. Without a clear cut goal of what we are trying to achieve makes it ;1) very difficult for the ground forces 2) very difficult for the tax paying public to understand what and why 3) more difficult to bridge gaps with the rest of the Moslem world. I believe the ground troops are doing a great job. Without their presence Afghanistan would deteriorate into a very bloody civil war again.

The question is Britain had to do do the job with 4000 troops in 2005 because of Iraq, which they now realise they need thousands more for as is happening now- which Britain could not provide alone. There was nothing wrong with British counter insurgency policy in terms of the concept- because the US is now copying it. The problem was about troop numbers needed to do the job in Afghanistan. Don't be blaming the British military, blame the politicians on both sides.

Now the US is in Helmand too, they're beginning to realise that it's not as easy as they made out. The implication that britain isnt doing its fair share is an insult to all those that have died. Maybe if britain pulled out of Iraq in 2006 when it was made clear we werent welcome anymore, but America needed us there for political back up so we wasted years for our ally instead of putting all effort into Afghanistan. Britain has an army of 100,000. 8000 every 6 months for afghanistan and 4000 every 6 months for Iraq plus countless other engagements guess what theres no troops left.
