I was behind an 'A' on the Reefton Saddle as a traveller in 1967 and we had a banker 427 and Guard Merrifield me and Russell all lay on the floor breathing through cotton waste rags. Train engine was I think 428. The thrashing of 427 in the tunnel was Dante's Inferno 70-80% cutoff 60%-ish regulator, and we had about 300 tons. The headlight was gone, it was , 427's smokebox was 20' away, very loud.. very very beyond words.
Very interesting, do they ever do any passenger excursions up this line?
