Its just a guitar man! I just bought a really cool black 1988 ES 175 and I fully intend to rock the shit out of it!! Its completely covered in checking all over the whole thing too, looks awesome. Great vid btw, I love fretted americana vids!!!!!!
I have a couple of ES-175s that I use for straight ahead jazz, but this guy certainly showed you can play whatever you want on them effectively. They also pull off Classical fairly well.
Oh and kudos for no effects! Just the abilities of the guitar and player. Awesome!
@PBANDSNOW not true. its not a jazz guitar, its a rock guitar or anything like that. ITS JUST A FUCKING GUITAR, U JUST FREACK OUT AND PLAY WHAT THE HELL U WANT TO PLAY ON IT
It's funny how some people think that hollows and semi-hollows can only be used for jazz.... I get funny looks from everyone at gigs cause I play Van-Halen licks on semi-hollows.
That's because the ignorant guitar freaks (large number of people) as compared to the wise guitar freaks (small number) have no creativity and no real experience.
well i would use that for jazz (if i had the money, hehe), with some pretty heavy gauge strings, but man. all the people that say one specific type of guitar is destined to one genre only, are just plainly stupid. if i remmeber coorectly, some hollowbody was used f.e. by a guy from average white band. and Joe Pass used to play a solid-body early in his career. and Ted Greene, who could play like anything including jazz standards, used a telecaster. Ted Nugent used a 175 as well. and so on...
Phil, there's soooo much sleepytime demo stuff out there, and you are the cure, man! You're showing off what these guitars can do, and some serious chops. And crazy bass backup, too! All the other demos are so boring and one dimensional. Love what you can do w/the 175s and the 295s. Shows 'em off big time. Thanks! And w/a free cure for taking ourselves too seriously. Love it.
@oOoACFREEMANoOo man, this guy is so good, Id buy anything from him to use if i could play like him haha NOT that he is anyway =) pure talent and skills
I can just have a really terrible day and after a few vids of Phil, I am back to laughing at the world.................... you just plain and simply, rock Dude.
ha! anybody who says es175 are only meant for jazz...take a look at our good old rockin friend George Thorogood. Now tell me what guitar that is? oh wait its an es 175. strange, i dont think 1 bourbon 1 scotch 1 beer is a jazz piece.
Nice video! It was entertaining watching you play--especially the Storm Trooper by Ted Nugent. I have a 1956 ES-715 in near mint condition. I'd love to see you demo that model (with the single pickup).
that song you didn't know the artist to. it was rose Royce before you get confused that's not a person its a band. they released it on a movie soundtrack for the movie car wash.
You know something Phil, i have watched a few of your videos and if i was selling something i would have you sell it for me!!!!!!!! Your an awsome player i hope to be as good one day and your funnier then HELL.......kEEP UP THE GOOD WORK..
Thanks for playin some rock n roll on guitars like this. I hate when people place certain guitars in a box and claim they're only meant for one particular style of music. God bless your style and creativity, and whatever the hell it is you use to fly as high as you do... oh yeah, it's called life!
I so totally gotta get me a ES-175 and hang out with some really, really old guys and play blues live for a crowd.. That's my dream. But since Gibsons are to expencive I've decided to go for a Greco ES-175 if I can make enough money that is (have about half of the money needed). BTW didn't Izzy Stradlin (ex-GNR) play an Alpine White ES-175 at the Ritz show 1988
I thought the tops were plywood on these, not maple? Did they change at some point? Sounds amazing anyway and it's nice to see a guitar showing its versatility. The funk sounded amazing and a nice change from a strat.
hey dumbass how about some jazz or blues comping on the neck pickup-----ever heard of it thats what u should use that guitar for- he probobly isnt ready for jazz anyway-- so stick to rock and steve howe (yes) by the way yes sucked ---good drummer though
wow, u called me a dumbass because I didn't comp jazz or blues chords on a hollowbody. I just watched your video & I should really listen to u 'cause u just invented the cure for insomnia.
@yosupish i think you should show some respect for such a talented and nice guy. He allows our ears to be pleased by such beautiful and rare instruments, with so much enthusiasm and passion you should thank him everytime you click on a fretted americana video..and come on, man, you may not like Howe but..how could he suck?? i don't think you re eddie van halen..Peace
LOL, just saw your videos. Dude you can't play your way out of a lunch bag, and you're critiquing Phil X???? Don't mess with Phil X on FA. You'll get hammered by "real" guitarists that know how to play.
@yosupish I believe steve howe uses this guitar and is highly influenced by jazz. So clearly this guitar can be used to cover yes, maybe watch one of the huge amounts of videos of jazz guitar with this particular model. No gtfo and leave phil x alone. He is a legend!
@yosupish Phil X is a legend. Steve Howe uses this guitar and popularised it in Gibsons opinion hence them making a sig for him so there is a no reason to play Yes on this guitar. Phil X is brilliant, why not watch a video with this guitar playing jazz, there are millions. Now, gtfo.
@yosupish He SHOULD have done some more rock. Ted Nugent proved that you can play rock with a jazz guitar. And he's played quite a few jazz licks fro FrettedAmericana. Search around before you diss Phil.
