  • im tried im just fucking tired

  • OMG--they are fantastic!

  • reminiscent of Interpol

  • Matt Berninger's Bedroom Conversations:

    Conversation #16

"Hey honey, if I turn into a zombie, make sure to put a bullet in my head."

    "Are you sure?"

"Yeah, otherwise I'm afraid I'd probably eat your brains."

    "Will do."

  • I honestly heard hype over The Nationals album 'High Violet' and was gonna look into the band and its older albums. But I never got to it with all the good music like Arcade Fires Suburbs. But then I watched the movie 'Warrior' and the song featured at the climax was so emotional and gorgeous I had to look it up. It was The National's song 'About Today'. And here I am exploring this great band. :D

  • @robhartjr1993 they used to open for arcade fire i think:)

  • Protip: Turtles

  • @melissaratliff right now I am listening via mobile but if I was on my pc I would like your comment , just saying

  • Too!! What a band! The invention is a milestone in their musical culture! While we Brazilian with Tropicalia and bossa nova with the 70's

  • 0:00-4:19 is my favorite part

  • @babyroo123 god i hate these nuftie comments

  • @babyroo123 OMG no way! that's my favorite part too! Cool. I wonder how many other people out there like that part?

  • I'm evil to!

  • "I'm a confident liar." My favorite line in the song.

  • what a song, the intensity, the depth....the emotion...

  • @aminhop1984 THIS.

  • My favourite part of the song:

''I was afraid that I'd eat your brains. 'CAUSE IIIIII'M EEEEEVIL!''

  • great song! actually..tis a great album. one of the best i've heard so far! i'd like to see these guys live someday ;)

  • @jazzitlikethat I saw them when they opened for Arcade Fire. After their set the lead singer of AF came out and said "Yeah...just so you know, the opening act isn't supposed to be better than you." They were amazing.

  • Better live!!

  • 11 people have no taste.

  • jes i digg this twoo

  • 'i'm a confident liar'

  • does anyone know how the first sound at the 0:00 was made ??

Which effect was used ? I think it's a guitar effect..

    thank you !

  • I love the national

  • This song is the only thing I want to hear anymore. <3

  • I am perpetually amused by the fact that the top rated comment on nearly every video is some pseudo witty formulation of "oh man how could five people not have liked this." A good deal of people obviously enjoy boasting about their taste in music, and hording with like minded people, more than they actually enjoy music itself.

  • @MorriseysGhost what are you doing?

  • Complaining about people who complain about complaining.

  • @8saintsfc are you complaining about someone who's complaining about people who complain about complaining?

  • @MorriseysGhost Now, you my friend. Shoud be the top comment. (:

  • This is so beautiful.. I only wish conversations 1 to 15 existed too.

  • were is the dislike bar??

  • "I was afraid I'd eat 11 people's brains

    cause they're evil"

  • @gogolplex74 Make that 12 people

  • @gogolplex74

and now the 12th person is for dessert!

  • 11 DISLIKES, WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE

  • This is one of the bands on my top 10 listt

  • Perfect Friday Night: Listening to: The National with Thunderstorms in the background, reading some books and drink a cold fine beer.

  • funny thing:

on first listen I thought he was singing "I was afraid I'll eat your brains, cos I'm evil"

    even funnier thing:

wait, those are the actual lyrics? 0_0

  • @gogolplex74 those are the lyrics.

  • This song is about a sociopath.

    Just letting you guys know.

  • @Fiferthedragonok What's your source for that?

  • @dausedman my ears.

  • @Fiferthedragonok Eh. National songs tend to be pretty ambiguous. I don't think its wise to go around claiming that your interpretation is absolutely correct. Especially when you don't even provide your reasons for believing it.

  • @dausedman yeah i think the national themselves don't know the meaning of their lyrics. whatever sounds fancier lol

  • @dausedman kill yourself ok <3

  • @Fiferthedragonok Your hair looks stupid.

  • @Fiferthedragonok Did you say that because of Bret posting this song on his Twitter?

  • @GonzoRumJunkie I don't know who that is. and i've had this album since it came out. listen to the lyrics closely. I'm a confident liar Had my head in the oven so you'd know where I'll be I'll try to be more romantic I want to believe in everything you believe I was less than amazing Do not know what all the troubles are for Fall asleep in your branches You're the only thing I ever want anymore
  • Things heard at a The National concert:

Singer: "This isn't a song about cannabalism."

Other bandmember in the background: "Yes it is.!

  • @EnzoValenzetti Wtf, it's cannibalism, not cannabalism

  • I'm addicted to this song, seriously, I can't stop listening to it... Is it possible to be in love with a song? :L

  • The lyrics are sheer poetry in this album. The words glide...yeah...may seem dense and slow, but it flows so easily...sticks with you...'try to hold it together til our friends are gone'...one of the many genius lyrics in HIGH VIOLET...Thanks for the upload! Thumbs up! :D

  • i was afraid i'd eat your brains. 'cause i'm evil...

  • I tought i was the only one who listen to this daily :D

  • as fuck

  • addictive

  • <3 this song reminds me of snow patrol mixed with the editors its so amazing its like BEEEEEUUUUTITITIIIFUFUUULLLL

  • @MeeLuvsJasonMraz wich song you talk about?

  • @jenesuispasyahir just the bands in general

  • I never heard a more beautiful song

  • i love the oboe!! WHo uses an Oboe?!?! Genius!

  • Week points in this track. The lyrics 'Everything is everything'. Also 'i'd eat your brains' . And the music for the brains and evil bit, its very bland and it is not necessary in the song. It does not suit the song. I am critical of this track purely because it is one of my favorite songs ever, despite criticisms. Anyone else think these bits aren't the best?

  • @willzer808 nope, i think those parts are great and when i first heard the song i thought those parts were the best.

  • @kimj0123 oh ok, well, that's cool too, banquet is also very cool :)

  • @willzer808 I see your point for the most part the flow is interrupted with those descriptions. However it fits because imo he is saying his inability to be and do what everyone wants will not only affect him but also consume his wife/partner. In turn he consumes his partner ie. eats her brains.

  • @willzer808 actually it's everything means everything.

  • @000DarkNite000 ok, thanks for pointing it out, but it still a bit whack

  • i LOVE the beat but the lyrics im not quite sure what it means?? anyone could tell me?

  • @xxtokiohotelfanxxx1 It's about a married man and he has a perfect life and a perfect life in a perfect town, but he is getting bored with his life. But he also doesn't want to hurt his wife ("I was afraid I'd eat your brains...cuz I'm evil..."

  • I feel like I've known this music since I was born to this earth.

  • I am abusing the heck out of that imaginary repeat button everyone always goes on about.

  • @xRasberryJam Imaginary? It pops up at the end of the video. Or have you never watched a full video on youtube before?

  • @WIldFire979 :o I have never even paid attention to the end! I always just rewind. Ha thanks for pointing out my stupidity, I learned something :)

  • @xRasberryJam You learn something everyday they say hey? Cool. Bless.

  • I know this comment sucks, but when I heard this song I immediately thought of Interpol (Take you on a cruise). There's nothing wrong with that, and I like it anyway. But I can not help thinking and even experience things in a relational manner.

  • i left because of the silver girls.

  • At first this album seems dense, slow, heavy.

    But oh man.

When it gets you it gets you fucking hard.

For sure one of the bests I've ever heard.

  • @mrfudgeyhead well said. i just loved it. was lucky enough to catch there show here in Tulsa at the legendary Cain's Ballroom. They were AMAZING. At one point the whole crowd sang acapella with them. magic

  • Holy god, this is AMAZING.

  • I'm addicted to this song.

  • 9 deaf people.

  • beautiful.

  • i always like when a male singer has a masculine voice

  • Comment removed

  • i love this song so much !!!!!

  • Great band. May sound boring but better than the crap nowadays.

  • Wonderful !

  • Every word sounds amazing with that voice

  • @patowenmusic so true!

  • you know, only 8 dislikes next to the 1,219 likes is pretty damn good for a song

  • I listen to this song everyday lol

  • 8 persons don't know what music is and probably prefer David Guetta. Shame on them

  • im soooo obsessed with this song. it makes no sense.

  • This song is, in my opinion, about self-loathing. After a break-up, he is coping by demonizing himself. Still hard not to cry when I hear it.

  • they sound like Depeche mode :))

  • Rich Parry from Arcade Fire plays on this!

  • The max :)

  • Adorei o "Um Grande Abraço" no final! *-* Minha música preferida deles!

  • Makes me hate my town when I listen to this song, but I don't know why. Maybe it's just the comparison of something so good (this song) to something so bad (my town.)

It's a hollywood summer, you'd never believe the shitty thoughts I think.

  • "'High Violet" is the best album of 2010. Like if you agree ;)

  • @TheJohanbaeten

Don't try to get a "Highest Rated Comment," you look pretty dumb. But indeed, this album was the shit, and so was Boxer.

  • @darytoauan well, that's absolutely not my goal.

  • @TheJohanbaeten "Like if you agree ;)" Indeed, you've made it clear. But if you feel a little happier with it "not being your goal," then it shall not be your goal.

  • @darytoauan You're mean! LOL

  • These guys need more attention...

  • @MoonblazeXCyruss I think they got a really selective audience, and that isn't bad actually. But where I live, in Belgium, they get lots and lots of attention, and that's really cool!

  • @MoonblazeXCyruss They're pretty well known already.

  • @MoonblazeXCyruss Please NOT mainstream attention

  • @Mrcreator124 Um.. What's wrong with normal people listening to and enjoying this song? You don't WANT The National to get more attention, and through that, more money for this awesome music?

Bands like The National deserves to be the mainstream

  • @MechaPencil

Few people have heard of them, but these few people have a great taste in music. Personally, if I were an artist (which I'm not), I'd want fans like us rather than people who've only heard (i.e) this song and like the crap nowadays...

  • @Mrcreator124 If I were an artist, which I'd like to be, I wouldn't aim my art at a broad group of people, but I would enjoy it if people of different music tastes were able to appreciate my work. I'm sure I don't like half the music you do, and it took me some getting use to to enjoy The National, but I genuinely appreciate it, and if it weren't for an exceedingly popular piece of media, I'd never have discovered them. This band deserves more attention, even mainstream attention.

  • more tickets to Coachella? visit the oficial facebook page of Aeromexico and win one ticket!!!

  • i feel like this song just never fully kicks in. one of my least favorite of theirs

  • When I heard this song, I desperately had the urge to cover it immediately....unfortunately it didn't help getting it out of my head ( come check it out if you like ) :-D

  • Check out Los Angeles' underground thinkers' band ALSO often getting mixed up with The National...but they have their own history and haven't wavered for the last things in style..(in my favorites)

  • 8 people didn't leave the silver city

  • @westie23 awr the "[#dislake] people didn't [song title]" comments are more sickening than the black death

  • "you'd never believe the shitty thoughts i think"

  • chorus needs to be played with a slow-motion zombie/apocalyptic movie scene.

  • Probably my favorite song off the album.

  • beautiful

  • I heard this once on the radio, but couldn't figure out who they were. Now I know, I've listened to this a hudred times in a row...

  • Haven't even heard of this band until hearing this song today. Really, really good...

  • Pure bliss...

  • @MsFootba11 If you listen to it daily it eventually gets bad

  • @MsFootba11

every time i come to listen to this song i like ur post lol

  • I WAS AFRAID I'D EAT YOUR BRAINS.

sometimes I feel this volatile, too.

  • I will never understand any of their lyrics.

  • Awesome

  • HE looked at me and say : "You must listen to this song, it's atmospheric and melancolic, just like you." I listen to it, again again and again, and I've never stopped 'til now...

  • The melody in the verse sounds a lot like Razamataz by Pulp.

  • I love this song, it's amazing. That's all :)

  • The lyrics are fantastic,

  • @Hejtykke123ful I think not anymore .. on their way to full success !

  • How so many people are oblivious to this band is beyond me. Their songs are consistently amazing and his voice is just so damn good.

  • i've just finished this book called "warm bodies" by Isaac Marion, about a zombie who begins to feel more than some of the living around him. It's absolutely a beautiful book, and this song feels like it's narrating part of it. It starts quite graphic but by the end i was so touched by it it had me in tears. So if you like the lyrics of this song, i have no doubt you would love this very well written and different book!

I think they're a bit like death cab for cutie...anyone else?

  • @Blueterracrimsonfire na, I wouldn't say so. Sounds like an interesting book, BTW

  • @Blueterracrimsonfire Sounds like an interesting book. And the feeling I get from The National sort of reminds me of Death Cab, but they don't sound very similar.
