@largolegato Really I think that was it. I barely knew who Shostakovich was when I was told this story; I was just principle clarinet of a high school band at the time. Concert pianist now...I guess I know better these days, haha.
I remember the band and the pianist Kapustin very well, although it must be some quite some time ago, around early sixties. Willis Conover once had Dizzy Gillespie as a guest on Music USA Jazz Hour and had played Oleg Lundstrem's big band's recordings blindfolded. Dizzy said it was authentic jazz of the highest quality.
