  • This was great! I forgot about this song, it bring back memories! Thanks

  • this is terrible lol fucking culchies

  • Tinkers are Gypsys who travel round mending or making pots and pans and selling them... the noise they made doing this is where the name Tinker came from

  • my grandmother ( shes 90)

told me what the tinkers of her youth were like

they were very poor and would beg

and people gave them stuff because they actually had nothing

  • mazdak1 shut up

  • so true!!

    there are horrible nowadays

  • In the old days, they made pots of copper, and rusty copper is poisonous. So, they covered pots with tin. But the tin covering worn out in time, so tinkers renewed the tim plating.

  • What is this song about .... ? ... besides taking our hands off the red-head Mary. Ahhhh- never mind. Don't be shy. it's okay to contact me.

  • This song is about a man meeting a girl called Mary. Mary's lover thinks the guy is hitting on her, and they fight, and others join the fight. In the end our gets beaten so much for Mary, and Mary decides to go with him.

The priest part is this: Mary's lover is telling him that they'll get married.

A tinker means simply a homeless person.

  • "In the end our GUY get beaten "

    a correction :)

  • I always thought a tinker was an itinerant tin smith although it's also used to refer to any member of the "travelling community" many of whom are red haired.

  • Yes you are right, a tinkerman is a person who covers stuff (copper pots, etc) with tin for a living. They travel all day looking for work. So, a homeless person is also called a tinker in slang.

In concert, Clancy brothers say (when introducing this song) "I'm sure you all know what tinkers are. You're looking at four of them. They are travelling people, they have no homes to go to ever".

  • Thanks for that, always good to learn new stuff. ;-)
