  • He ate his own weight in coal and excreted diamonds everyday.

  • I CAN'T I AM WAITING FOR A CAB!!!

    lo9lolololololol

  • Charles Nelson Reilley wears a live rattlesnake for a condom

  • Charles Nelson Rielly figured out cold fusion, but he never ever told a soul

  • Chuck was a great comedian, writer, actor and knew what/who he was and said take it or leave it. Kudos to him.

  • @TomBBrady12 YEP! Did you see his DVD of his one-man-show when he is quite old? He tells the story of his childhood and it is funny and sad and amazing!!!

  • @SHRINA17 Hahaha you're welcome!

  • Truly SCRUMTRULESCANT

  • @MrJackRedding -------LOL!!!!!!!!! You made my day with that!!! Thanks for the laugh!

  • i loved watching him on the match game, so hillarious!

  • 240p we meet again.

  • Bill Murray needs to do this guy's life story SOON! :D

  • If you can find it (which I can't) try to find Alec Baldwin doing his impression of Charles Nelson Reilly on Saturday Night Live as they spoof "Inside The Actors Studio". Wil Farrell impersonates James Lipton, the host of ITAS. Watch for "Charles" (Baldwin) talk about "Betty White's Boob". You'll piss your pants with laughter !!!!!!!

  • I've heard that Charles Nelson Reilly was gay, but I'm not sure I can believe that.

  • A very funny talented gracious man.

  • I love how Johnny lights up a smoke in the middle of the interview. Oh for the days when the Tonight Show was for adults; low key and cool.

  • This wasTV at its finest...there weas nothing like the great 1970s.....and Carson was indeed the KING OF LATE NIGHT!!! the only one that does come close in my opinion is David Letterman....Charles Nelson Reilly was so damn funny.....TV will never be like this ever again....

  • The White Stripes brought me here. Well....kinda.

  • I remember staying up late to watch these celebrities, not really getting all of it, but somewhat excited by it all. Today half of what are called celebrities seem to be bat shit crazy and their stories not so interesting.

  • Johnny's jacket gets two "yahha's".

  • i liked when alec baldwin imitated him on SNL......funny shit.

  • Carson was the best of the best...no argument there. I like the way he keeps a sense of awe about CNR...he allows him to be his comedic self, engages in conversation, and remains attentive throughout his schtick!!!

  • cnr was a funny guy,and a survivor, and i would not care if his dog,cat and canary were gay! he was deadpan funny, and unlike his contemporary paul lynde,he chose to live!

  • why was she sitting when man stood. didnt she know she has elected herself as equal. especially to Charles and hes a mommas boy. lol!

  • @laneatlileden It's a point of etiquette for women to remain sitting with a man enters a room, approaches a table, or presents himself for introductions. This habit has largely died out in certain segments of society, however. Charles and other men of that time would assume she would do so, as well.

  • One of the true "one of a kind" entertainers!

  • Charles Nelson Reilly's sexual orientation is irrelevant. What's important is that he was one of the funniest and most entertaining guests ever to appear on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. His legions of fans sorely miss him.

  • alec baldwin did a wonderful impression of him on SNL

  • I will always remember him as Hoodoo on Lidsville.

  • Damn, why are you all thumbing up quotes from that song? 0_0

    Here, if I say this,

"He ate his weight in coal and excreted diamonds every day.."

Would you give me a thumbs up?

  • look at that shag carpet!!!! i love it!

  • never heard of this guy but he's funny

  • @citizendieter Watch his clips on Match Game, awesome show! Game shows aren't what they used to be.

  • I'd forgotten that Johnny -- and often his guests -- used to smoke on the show. Looks so weird now, but it was "normal" back then.

  • You can spit in the wind or tug on Superman's cape but lord knows you just don't mess around with CNR!

  • Wow did you notice Johnny lighting up? He wasn't even able to do that in the 80"s & early 90's! This has got to be from about 1976 because Jack Albertson was huge in Chico and the Man at that time

  • A presumption based on? Why diminish people who are dead to make your rim shot?

  • Lighten the hell up. It's not a presumption--it's a joke. Curious--why do you think pointing out the sexual preference of a deceased celebrity who's confirmed it diminishing? And speaking of rim shots...:D

  • It was a half-hearted defense of dear Charles - he may not have been the bathhouse type, that's all... pointing out his sexual preference isn't a concern... but some people use the bathhouse reference insinuously... and yes, the rim shot was me trying to lighten it up! No harm / no foul...

  • @ohbutyes Got it.

  • @torgman lol probably I'm sure he'd laugh at that himself

  • Comment removed

  • @torgman That's actually the sort of campy humor he would have loved.

  • Don't mess with CNR!!!

  • A little bit like Fred Armisen.

  • There we are, Charles Nelson Reilly in the Chair making everybody uncomfortable, and Johnny Carson lighting up a smoke completely unceremoniously...man, makes me wish it was the 70's.

  • @Osiris1st Amen brother. This was late night television the way late night television should be. FUCK JAY LENO!

  • It's hard to believe that Charles, Johnny and now Ed are no longer with us!

    RIP! Loved but never forgotten!

  • Watch CNR, you'll be in on the joke, too.

  • he'd make the host of match game give him a piggy back ride...yeaahhh! a two hour piggy ride, giddy up gene!!

  • what the hell are you talking about?

  • He was so funny!

  • Charles is hilarious! Really something to see Johnny having a smoke right in the middle of things.

  • Did he say he was friends with Gene Simmons? Of KISS?

  • No. Jean Simmons, of stage and screen.

  • hes got glasses!!! like in cnr~!

  • He stood 8 foot tall, wore glasses and he had a third nipple on the back of his neck.

  • @VeGuardian I dont know about the 3rd nipple..but he does look very tall. If you had a nipple on the back of your neck you'd use it in the act.... wouldn't you?

  • He ate his own weight in coal and excreted diamonds every day.

  • Charles Nelson Reilly was a mighty man, the kind of man you didn't disrespect!

  • see the weird al yankovic song!

  • man that lady's lauph is annoying

  • Ferguson is the closest we have now to the golden age of these shows... he's certainly my favorite!

  • RIP ED CNR (old) Johnny (4 years old trib) !! Jean Simmons the ACTRESS not from KISS!! This is Gotta B B4 1980 w/ Johnny SMOKING UP!! SMOKING on a talk show NOW would B like pissing on his desk!!

  • do you realise how annoying your comments looks and reads?

  • This clip is emblematic of what talk shows used to be. Guests got together and talked, and they all knew each other and were friends. Now the talk shows are just a couple of minutes for the guest to pretend to banter just a little and plug their latest project.

  • 2:57 - 2:58 check out the boom mic in the frame!

  • Charles was definitely gay, and had a partner for many decades when he died.

  • He also discussed his homosexuality many times in his one man show.

  • I remember doing this

  • I miss Johnny more than I can express. Thank you for sharing this,

  • everyones' lives are intertwined with CHARLES. it is just SO.

  • Jack Albertson and his sister Mabel were born in Lynn MA the city next to mine. Glad to see Charles came out of the closet, did you see that special he was in filmed at his house, serving dinner with his young boyfriend. The boyfriend was mean to him and Charles replied, "Don't do that I love you!" Was so sweet. I always knew Charles was a nellie but in those days in the 50's & 60's you could not honor your gay-ness, but now everyone's coming out of the closet. GAY PRIDE / NO HATE

  • Good

  • SHAAAAG CARPET!

  • and check out the table!

  • I remember those cigarette boxes on the set and everybody who smoked could smoke on tv. No more.

  • Ron and Fez... noon to three

  • Good

  • God bless him! Charles Nelson Reilly was so MUCH fun, and Johnny Carson will never be replaced. I think most of his guests felt comfortable with him.

Wonderful memory. Thank you for sharing this with us!

    JM : )

  • thats a very nice comment!

  • Whoa. A little freaky watching Johnny light up there, considering it was emphasema that killed him.

  • Oh I love Charles! But what is this "Bob and Susan" reference I keep hearing him refer to? It's here and on Match Game.

  • I think those were his joke names for Jack Albertson & Phyllis Newman. In line w/ how well he said he knew them, he pretended not to know their names.

  • did he come out of the closet before he died?

  • When was he in???

  • This was when late night television had respect. Look at how the previous guests hung around for the rest of the show. When Johnny Carson was on it was an event not a tired bullshit routine. Nowadays some big names will hang around but most of them have "important places to go" like smoking crack or something. EVERYBODY IS SO DAMN BUSY THESE DAYS IN HOLLYWOOD.

  • Mr. Reilly was big pals with Burt Reynolds. There's an odd couple for you. I do a pretty good impersonation of Mr. Reilly's maniacal chuckle if I do say so myself. Showbiz, baby!

  • Showbiz, baby. It's dying out. Now we're left with the third runner-up from "Idol" & some fat housewife who won "Survivor."

  • This is wonderful! Who will they be talking with in the future? Those gross losers from Reality shows? Heaven help us!

  • cnr as whodoo check it

  • Jesus, I remember him from 35 years ago - am I that old? TV didn't seem to be as lousy as it is now.

  • Ya you are that old, Like me! And tv was wonderful in the old days. It has gone downhill.

  • I can't argue about that one. Since the 1980s the talk show in America has seen a general decline with very very little quality shows.

  • I don't believe it, Charles Nelson Reilly is friends with Gene Simmons. Those two are from completely different worlds.

  • I believe that CNR was referring to the actress Jean Simmons (Guys and Dolls) rather than Gene (KISS). He and Jean would be more believable and from similar worlds.

  • I was just curious cause Jack Albertson looks alot older then he did when he starred in CHICO AND THE MAN! Do you have any episodes to upload here? Would appreciate it!

  • Yeah Jack's actually promoting the premiere of "CHICO" and he talks about Freddie a little... don't have any eps though...

  • hey can you upload that part for me? I really love both JACK ALBERTSON & FREDDIE PRINZE!

  • what year was this?

  • This was September 6, 1974.

  • "in his element" is perfectly right! It's been almost a generation since I've seen this kind of top-of-the-head cleverness on a talk show. I know of very few personalities who have come of age in the past 15 years that have this degree of class, dignity, and wit.

  • thanks so much for uploading this. He is one of those men that makes me feel the planet shrinking a bit when he passed. We need people who make us laugh more than ever.

  • I agree :-) What a lovely tribute.

  • I read today in the newspaper that Mr. Reilly appeared a near record 97 times on the Tonight Show.

  • R.I.P. Charles. The Greatest.

  • Good Bye Mister Reilly!

  • RIP

  • God bless him and his wit.

    And fur rug! :)

  • Charles died today.
