@TomBBrady12 YEP! Did you see his DVD of his one-man-show when he is quite old? He tells the story of his childhood and it is funny and sad and amazing!!!
If you can find it (which I can't) try to find Alec Baldwin doing his impression of Charles Nelson Reilly on Saturday Night Live as they spoof "Inside The Actors Studio". Wil Farrell impersonates James Lipton, the host of ITAS. Watch for "Charles" (Baldwin) talk about "Betty White's Boob". You'll piss your pants with laughter !!!!!!!
This wasTV at its finest...there weas nothing like the great 1970s.....and Carson was indeed the KING OF LATE NIGHT!!! the only one that does come close in my opinion is David Letterman....Charles Nelson Reilly was so damn funny.....TV will never be like this ever again....
I remember staying up late to watch these celebrities, not really getting all of it, but somewhat excited by it all. Today half of what are called celebrities seem to be bat shit crazy and their stories not so interesting.
Carson was the best of the best...no argument there. I like the way he keeps a sense of awe about CNR...he allows him to be his comedic self, engages in conversation, and remains attentive throughout his schtick!!!
cnr was a funny guy,and a survivor, and i would not care if his dog,cat and canary were gay! he was deadpan funny, and unlike his contemporary paul lynde,he chose to live!
@laneatlileden It's a point of etiquette for women to remain sitting with a man enters a room, approaches a table, or presents himself for introductions. This habit has largely died out in certain segments of society, however. Charles and other men of that time would assume she would do so, as well.
Charles Nelson Reilly's sexual orientation is irrelevant. What's important is that he was one of the funniest and most entertaining guests ever to appear on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. His legions of fans sorely miss him.
Wow did you notice Johnny lighting up? He wasn't even able to do that in the 80"s & early 90's! This has got to be from about 1976 because Jack Albertson was huge in Chico and the Man at that time
Lighten the hell up. It's not a presumption--it's a joke. Curious--why do you think pointing out the sexual preference of a deceased celebrity who's confirmed it diminishing? And speaking of rim shots...:D
It was a half-hearted defense of dear Charles - he may not have been the bathhouse type, that's all... pointing out his sexual preference isn't a concern... but some people use the bathhouse reference insinuously... and yes, the rim shot was me trying to lighten it up! No harm / no foul...
There we are, Charles Nelson Reilly in the Chair making everybody uncomfortable, and Johnny Carson lighting up a smoke completely unceremoniously...man, makes me wish it was the 70's.
@VeGuardian I dont know about the 3rd nipple..but he does look very tall. If you had a nipple on the back of your neck you'd use it in the act.... wouldn't you?
RIP ED CNR (old) Johnny (4 years old trib) !! Jean Simmons the ACTRESS not from KISS!! This is Gotta B B4 1980 w/ Johnny SMOKING UP!! SMOKING on a talk show NOW would B like pissing on his desk!!
This clip is emblematic of what talk shows used to be. Guests got together and talked, and they all knew each other and were friends. Now the talk shows are just a couple of minutes for the guest to pretend to banter just a little and plug their latest project.

Charles Nelson Reilly was gay?!? That's very surprising. He always seemed to be such a lady's man. I know the ladies certainly did love him. I just had no idea that he was gay.
Jack Albertson and his sister Mabel were born in Lynn MA the city next to mine. Glad to see Charles came out of the closet, did you see that special he was in filmed at his house, serving dinner with his young boyfriend. The boyfriend was mean to him and Charles replied, "Don't do that I love you!" Was so sweet. I always knew Charles was a nellie but in those days in the 50's & 60's you could not honor your gay-ness, but now everyone's coming out of the closet. GAY PRIDE / NO HATE
God bless him! Charles Nelson Reilly was so MUCH fun, and Johnny Carson will never be replaced. I think most of his guests felt comfortable with him.
Wonderful memory. Thank you for sharing this with us!
I think those were his joke names for Jack Albertson & Phyllis Newman. In line w/ how well he said he knew them, he pretended not to know their names.
This was when late night television had respect. Look at how the previous guests hung around for the rest of the show. When Johnny Carson was on it was an event not a tired bullshit routine. Nowadays some big names will hang around but most of them have "important places to go" like smoking crack or something. EVERYBODY IS SO DAMN BUSY THESE DAYS IN HOLLYWOOD.
Mr. Reilly was big pals with Burt Reynolds. There's an odd couple for you. I do a pretty good impersonation of Mr. Reilly's maniacal chuckle if I do say so myself. Showbiz, baby!
I believe that CNR was referring to the actress Jean Simmons (Guys and Dolls) rather than Gene (KISS). He and Jean would be more believable and from similar worlds.
I was just curious cause Jack Albertson looks alot older then he did when he starred in CHICO AND THE MAN! Do you have any episodes to upload here? Would appreciate it!
"in his element" is perfectly right! It's been almost a generation since I've seen this kind of top-of-the-head cleverness on a talk show. I know of very few personalities who have come of age in the past 15 years that have this degree of class, dignity, and wit.
thanks so much for uploading this. He is one of those men that makes me feel the planet shrinking a bit when he passed. We need people who make us laugh more than ever.
