  • I declare Earth Hour as a hazard!

What if some one tripped and fell in a burning candle?

How do you like that, eco-freakos???

  • i tried spraying areosel cans and burning tires to shut off my lights but its not working, any tips?

  • Try setting yourself on fire. That should do the thrick.

  • i turn my lights off for about 10hours when i go to bed, and i dont have lights on in the day time so yanoooo, its not gna make a difference

  • lol.. i think the WWF knows one hour doesn't make a significant difference.. thats the point.. awareness.. clearly not a solution.. just an idea...

To make pple go.. hmm..this isn't too bad.. why don't I do this every night.. and who knows..

  • Pfft. Even if all 200,000 people of a electric company using coal power turn all their stuff off for an hour the coal plant will still burn 23tons of coal that hour to keep the grid up so that when everyone flips their switches back on the power will be their after the hour is up (smirk)

Flipping off the switch does nothing, The Community threatening the Electric company to go off grid and use their own power sorces at home unless they use something other then coal does

  • WOOOOHOOOO Earth Hour is awesome!! can't wait will next year. Good luck paying your electric bill this month kakaka...those who didn't turn off your lights. Guess someone is working over time!!

  • guess what i celebrated my rights by keeping every light on for an hour

  • why is it that no one has ever mentioned in saving the earth telling people to have 2 or 3 kids not fucking a bus load ..

people should be taxed to have more then 4 kids not fucking payed to spew more out ..derrrrrrr mr kevin ruud derrrr

  • ummm how come sydney let fire works off after earth hour ....stupid fucking dick heads wake up fuck heads its save the planet not make more worse with pollution eg fireworks ummm daaa

  • 3 hours and 40 minutes until "The Earth Hour 2009" in MEXICO

  • i totally agree

  • If you think im crazy about this, check how crazy you sound saying your earth hour. What the hell are you going to do for fun when the lights are out.Being green is the most boringest crap ever.

  • time for the earth relaxxx

  • They cannot simply take down one generator or add generation at a moments notice.. This is happening during non peak hours to complicate matters.

The issue is that when everyone turns everyone turns everything back on, it will create a disapportinate load on the grid. For instance, if only 2kilowatts are available, the inrush current may be 2.5 k, which is enough to trip failsafes in the system. If this happens, it will cause the load to trunk over the next section of the grid. ie:blackouts

  • well, thanks for all the info and explaination. But you know what, all I want is to get more people to think about global warming, not how the whole electricity theory works.

And it is really no use explaining all those complex stuff to some random dudes, you should go speak to the government about this, lol.

  • Do not do this. It's strictly "feel good" and does nothing to help. The ones that set this up have no idea how electrical distribution works, and effects of disproportionate load balance on the grid.

  • well if it's like what u said. at least it raises people's awareness about global warming.

if u're not going to help, please don't try to discourage others.

    We'd appreciate that, thanks.

  • No and this is why. If you have a neighborhood of six houses, 4 participate, 2 dont. The system is designed to supply steady voltage of 120/220 volts to the entire block. Those two houses that are not participating will will experience a small voltage spike, probably around 2-3 volts possibly as high as 5, enough to damage senstive electronic equipment.

Also, power generation is NOT static. They make decisions on how much to put online based on many factors, weather conditions, etc.

  • Turn off the lights but hey for that hour lets turn our heatin up for the same hour....

  • What's the fantastic music?

  • Support earth hour!!! Turn your lights OFF at 8.30 pm, 28 March 2009... Where ever you are!

  • The electric company will suffer

  • im doin it this year and i hope none of my family screw it up!

  • WOW!!! Google has a black version called: clean black [dot] com. It saves energy as it uses a black background. Similar initiative as Earth Hour!

  • Is it just me or was this an OK finish to the event? I turned my lights off and all electrical appliances for the full hour in support of Earth Hour. Then at 9:00 to my dismay, FIREWORKS!! Fireworks!!?? On Earth Hour night!! Did somebody screw up because isn't Earth Hour about the environment or were environmentally friendly fireworks used? Am I the only one concerned? Everyone is saying Sydney should be praised, I think we should be horse whipped (at least this is environmentaly friendly).

  • Major problems with Earth Hour is unless the Coal Power Plant is shut down, it still burns it's allotment of coal for that hour whether or not you use the power that is availible "on demand"..so it's nothing more then a feel good jesture

People proubldy use their Cellphones,Iphones video cameras to record the event not realizing how much oil and coal goes into making and maintainng those things as well(Rollsetyes)

  • 60 minutes = 1 hour...

  • yo what does the 60 on the logo stand for?

  • An hour.

    60 minutes=1 hour

  • i missed the toilet. blame society.

  • lmao that is funny

  • Yay, I participated!

  • i turned off my lights for 1 hour today.

    did you?

  • Hell no, I'm afraid of the dark!

  • yeah

  • Yep.

  • this event unites all of the people in the world. we need this kinds of events to be united. being united: it is one of the most important parts of this event.

  • Hey look I'm spitting out random facts I google'd up two minutes ago and sounding like a smart rebelious badass on youtube.

  • lets do this, i am going to do this when it reaches 800 tonight.. i think that this is a great thing every year.. and come on everyone its just 1 hour of time.. and thanks a lot for everyone that is participating in this.

  • I have an idea. ill turn on my ac and point it outside...

  • why on saturday? in canada we watch hockey on saturday and now i cant for 1 hour :(

  • sports bar

  • Congratulations to Sydney and Europeans countries for turning off your power!!!

now it's San Francisco,Toronto,Chicago,Buenos Aires and some people of South america's

    turn!

    c'mon let's do it!

  • its been 35 mins since earth hour started:P

  • Thank you for

    sharing this with us..

    Roy Fielding

  • Earth hour shows just how easy it is to get fools to fall for nonsense. Goebbels said if you tell the lie long enough, loud enough and often enough, the people will eventually accept it as truth. The hoax continues ...

  • Ignorant perhaps? Haha. Watch your news, boy. The effects of global warming is everywhere.

  • The short term trend has been warmer - the cause of it is the question. Mars has warmed recently as well. Is it possible that this is a normal part of the sun's cycle, affecting both planets. In the 70's, it was global cooling. We were going to freeze and starve to death. There have been people predicting the earth's demise as long as man has been on earth. Thanks but I'll pass on the doom and gloom.

Ignorant perhaps - Maybe you should stop watching the news, 'boy'.

  • sure but we dont need the news to see what is going on in physical world sure 70s was cool or so you say but then it warmed up right.the fact is it has been warming up constant since the 80s that is 28 years ago and it is even worse today it isnt so much that the earth is warming up or the fact that the sun is closer to the earth it is that the earth is getting more and more humid and muggy that is why you get smog in bigger cities poor air quality fossil fuels help keep some of the radiation in

  • Piratedan, you dick. Shall I knock your lights out little boy??????? I could beat your arse in the dark.

  • fucked up dick, kill urself by dropping dead in the middle of the night

  • Currently in darkness :D

  • oo 9 mins left!!!!!!!!

  • It's March 29 9pm in New Zealand, the first country to complete the '08 earth hour challenge. We made a difference! You can too!!

  • the 2 comments below me one is because i had to repost it or ill die the one below me is to reply for frog654456

  • Piratedan, you are a little boy. Grow up dickhead. I would punch your lights out F@#k HEAD.

  • No you wouldn't. in reality you are a fucking bitch. FUCK YOU!

  • jesus christ, how fucke d in the head r u. have some respect mate. or i will hunt you down and kick your ass.

  • no you won't, because you are a fag.

  • well u must have evilness pumping through your body to make you say something like that.

  • oh, and you are a cun t

  • that was a little belated. I hope it didn't take you 10 minutes to think of that.

  • stupid fuk

  • you are just like joostisabelle, a fuking bitch on the first 'Great Southern land" video

  • thats nice. i don't care

  • well get 'n' care prik, you turn your lights off every night you go 2 sleep so you could injure yourself in the dark by simply falling out of your bed!!

  • you are a fuckin idiot

  • What a load of Bullshit! If you turn your lights out you are retarded!

  • lol what a twat

  • im going to feel sorry for prisoners because bubba will be getting all of them so wen earth hour comes then DEFINETLY make sure you dont drop the soap

  • lololololololololololoo i remember my friend getting a detetion slip for saying the word "dont drop the soap" in art class and i didnt know what he ment until someone told me and uh yeah lolololooolol

  • LOL very funny

  • I just found out about this whole earth day, I think it's an amazing idea. Everyone MAKE chain letters! I started a text msg chain letter, I sent it to like 100 people and that is going to multiply FAST. I also made some email chain letterr. If we all make chain letters then we can spread the word at fast rates.

We all need to pitch in, it's only one hour.

  • It's called Climate Change now for some reason not global warming

  • A meat eater riding a bike leaves a bigger carbon footprint than a vegan driving a Hummer. Our best personal action is to adopt a vegan diet & lifestyle to address global warming. Google "Livestocks Long Shadow" & UN 2006 report "Cattle rearing worse for global warming than all automotive industries combined". DEFRA (UK) now suggests to the public to adopt a vegan diet. Green groups need stop ignoring this crucial issue and begin to educate the public. For all sentient beings - Go vegan

  • Peace

    Love

    Life

    From Israel

  • we can make it,by means of our unity..even we came from different countries and races we can make it sucessful,i believe in that,,we will sacrifice for just one hour and that 1 hr. can help too much on our earth.i know it was hard to do due to many reasons but its better to action as early as we can than to realize if we are all vanish..people!let us unite!earth hour, philippines is with u

  • I think everything is possible! We can make it only if we want to...

And perharps the turn off lights thing its something impossible but you say it because you don't have an open-mind...

    everything is possible!

    I'm with you guys...

  • There is a lot of bogus hype and deliberate omission in this current global warming scare. A little internet research on alternative explanations will show the holes in his story. He is just getting richer from it and we will all get poorer if they introduce carbon tax and carbon trading.

  • I will be doing this. Not jumping the bandwagon just doing what I have always known is right. It is great to see these types of things finally catching on with the younger generation.

  • Absolutely.

  • Christians have become pure capitalists . They no longer help the poor . They invest in oil companies , drive SUV's , and encourage wealth above values . Christians have destroyed native cultures around the world , and in doing so taken the will from the people to better themselves ! Christians caused global warming !

  • I hear what you are saying here but if I could point out, these people pushing exploitation of people are not christians. By their fruits will you recognize followers of Jesus ie what they do and the oil mongers definitely are not!!!

  • well ure all pricks then you should be wanting to do something to stop global warming.

  • power plants cant just change there voltage within an our. It take about 24 hours for one to start up and 24 hours to shut down. Cant jus say lets turn down the fire for a hour.

  • Sorry that's not true. Earth Hour will not cause power plants to shut down. They just drop load for a while and they cando it quickly - just like putting less fuel on the fire. The voltage does not change! That is regulated by electrical companies and remains constant, except on the occasion when it is very hot and the power plants can't keep up with the demand. Voltage change could occur if the climate shifts and becomes too hot in major cities when everyone runs the A/C.

  • Not true. You don't have to shut the plant down just drop the load. The voltage will NOT change. And yes you can just turn down the fire for an hour, it's not that complicated. Earth Hour will not impact the voltage and will not require power plants to shut down.

  • this should happen more often around the world! it will make a change

  • What a load of crap earth hour is! If the Yankee and Australian governments were serious about carbon emissions they would be dumping fossil fuel usage or at least keeping it to a minimum. Why aren't they funding electric car and compressed air car technology. Both of these are available now. India is buying the MDI compressed air car for use this year. Where does the electricity come from to make this earth friendly. Wind Tidal Nuclear Solar Geothermal Hydro and minimal fossil fuel usage.

  • In response to rplende's comment, i do agree with you about governments need to get their acts together, but i don't believe earth hour is a "load of crap". earth hour was not started by governments, but by the public. that one hour last year made a huge impact on the public, and the energy saved was equal to i think taking 48000 cars off the road.

  • That may be so missfets85 that it was started by the public. Albeit a brainwashed public. I must admit that the idea and practice isn't all that bad but what I was trying to get at is that the real issues are not being tackled. It is a feel good exercise by ordinary people but the power wielders and government officials don't really give a crap. And Al Gore is just spreading complete bullshit with his scaremongering.

  • Yeah i have to agree, but i suppose every little act counts.

  • word

  • I can assure you that I will be sure to turn on every light in my house to protest this stupidity.

  • I will be BLINKING my lights in protest against this insanity.

Environmentalism is anti-technology/-humanity, scientifically bogus, in essence a philosophic/political movement implying totalitarian power over every aspect of our existence. Its leaders are openly value untouched nature over human life and comfort.

EH's darkness should be noted as a symbol of what is to come if environmentalism continues unopposed.

Someone has to blink--let it be us.

  • Cool :D

  • if too many people turns off too many mashines, the voltage will rise and demage all the devicec, plugged into local electrisity supply..

  • Not true. When you turn off your lights the power plants back down their load to meet the electrical demand. The voltage will not change.

  • 1 lamp is a drop in ocean.

nuclear power stations are regulating the speed of uranium fissions, which prowides power, proportional to speed. if suddenly many mashins turns off, the power must go somewhere - rising voltage...

  • The majority of electrical power is base loaded with nuclear power plants. However the fossil fueled plants handle the swing load. But even nuclear plants can raise and lower load, so the voltage will not change. The voltage is regulated by the electrical industry and the system can handle any swing. There will be no damage to electrical devices that are plugged in.

  • i think we should do this every month :)

  • Portsmouth in the UK is doing this.

  • This is beautiful. I can't wait to start living like the people in Africa, walking 5 miles for some water (nice exercise), having an open fire in the bedroom (nice), and treating illness with herbal medicine (good for you). Soon we will all be just like we were 900 years ago, wonderful! who wants to join my tribe? :)

  • This ad has a chance of winning for Australia at the Cannes International Advertising festival. Let's hope it does.

  • No body was stopping people outside of sydney from joining in! They also had a similar thing they asked EVERYONE in Australia to participate in. It was advertised daily on a Melbourne based morning show. Anyway it's not about SYDNEY..it's about tryin to help and it did!

  • hey omg, we like saved the earth for one hour, kind of. Yeah because that really matters. Go on, read about how much energy your great friend Al Gore uses.

  • Hi there. The point of Earth Hour is not to save energy for one hour - it is the beginning of a campaign to reduce Sydney's energy consumption by 5% in 2007.

That said - during the hour the Sydney CBD reduced electricity use by 10% for the hour - that's a lot of power saved.

It goes to show that individuals and companies, each doing their bit, can make a significant difference.

  • From my point of view in the US, this movement started in Austrailia - which makes all of Austrailia years ahead of the rest of the world in addressing the issue of global warming. Austrailia should be extremely proud as a nation for taking the lead.

There are over 6 billion people on this planet. We must do SOMETHING soon to stop its destruction or there will be nothing left to save for the future.

  • Sorry - typos. Australia!

  • good idea hope it helps. what is the music used?

  • FANTASTIC, Everybody please support this great idea...

  • Good to see these kinds of things happening where people can participate, and make a difference.

I know I' am going to join in, and it's the best night to actually go out and look at the stars, and hopefully its completely dark. lol

wonder if anyone can record the city lights from like, sunset to actually 8.30 pm and maybe could give me the original vid, so I can have a go in making a response vid ...

but anyways looking forward to it!.. Someone feature this vid lol.

  • Yeah, why is earth hour only for Sydney?? It should be an Australian thing... very disappointing.

  • Everybody is encouraged to participate (as per the website). The plan is to go global.

  • They could have easily made it a national event instead, however the organisers are based in Sydney and did not wish to share the limelight, so to speak. I'm sure other cities will follow in future years, but it mattered to the organisers that everybody knows which city they are following - Sydney. It was only a symbolic event, after all.

  • We need more adds that show the impact of what global warming has and will do in australia... The younger generation(my generaation) needs to know how serious this is and what we can do to stop it...

  • really sweet? How bout 139 degrees in the summer! or try to have almost all of the fish in the see gone! Or even 60% of the land animals gone. Think of that

  • we can eat man-made meat.. It's actually a growing biological tissue made in a lab

  • im going to put this on myspace.. ive told heaps of people bout this! well done !! :)

  • Thanks Lizzy :)
