  • If all fansubs did their work as psychoKORPS did with macross 7... and that was on a time when PCs weren't easy to find and use as today. I wonder what PsychoKORPS staff is doing these days... those news fansubs had a lot to learn with these guys...

also, i'm watching Macross7 right now and i find their translation and typesetting very good!

Also, I share the same opinion as @GetterRay and @AirCooledMan2006

  • Great video, this is the kind of subbing I aim for in some of the fansubs I work on.

Why is it that people embraced sub styles like this when they were getting fansubs on degraded VHS tapes, but when a groups do similar styles on modern digisubs (e.g. We Suck's Karin and Story of Saiunkoku), there's a shitstorm of leecher complaints?

  • No way, people actually complain when a sub is barebones like this?

  • Yes they do, sadly enough. You should see the complaints on R1 anime DVD-rips that dare to use the same subtitles that were on the DVDs. Because apparently yellow subs look "ugly, like someone pissed on the screen." As opposed to green subs where somebody sneezed on the screen, red subs like somebody bled on the screen, white subs where somebody jizzed on the screen, etc.

  • @Conchobhar don't you know? anime has to be watched in 7000x3000 pixel resolution, with a different font and colour used to subtitle each character's dialogue!

  • Have you ever considered that it's a different bunch of people that watch different things or that in todays age people are spoiled and can't enjoy something

  • for what it is. Damn it didn't do that on purpose.

  • Why the hell would you want kanji on kareoke? If you can understand the kanji then you don't need the subs.

  • Of course, over the top flashyness is bad, and showing song subs in scenes other than the OP and ED is just distracting and usually unneccessary.

  • On a totally unrelated side note... this song is amazing. totally gets me excited :D

  • Nothing Firebomber-related is EVER unrelated!

    BOMBER!!!

  • I think Dattebayo (Naruto Fansub group) should take a look at this. Cause they need a bit of help.

  • @DarkJak2050

Hell yeah!! I totally agree with you

    on that one.

  • Now THAT's how fansubs are supposed to be done! Yes, fansubs ARE the cancer that's killing the anime industry, but if you're going to do a fansub, translate the dialogue into SMOOTH English, don't use any shitty karaoke effects, don't use any crazy fonts, and don't smear your e-penis all over the show!

  • Well done. I respect Otaking's point, and even agree with him up to a point (on certain matters, I agree with him 100%), but his argument seemed to be that there are no good fansubs. Which isn't true.

  • As far as the whole old Macross vs new Macross goes.. I'm enjoying watching Macross F up to this point (ep. 10; Shinsen's fansub is actually good), but it doesn't compare at all to older Macross, nor does it feel like it.

For the record, I'm not a huge fan of Macross 7. lol

  • But the budget is humongous for Macross Frontier, and the quality is amazing compared to any other series out there. So what if it doesn't compare to the older Macross. Look at what its like compared to EVERYTHING ELSE out RIGHT NOW.

  • I had this same debate you had with a person I know who has kept up with and worked with media for the past 60 years and I'd have to tell you your arguments while legitimate would be shot down only to show that you are too picky and stubborn. Do you realize now nice the art work and at least some of the storyline is going right now for TV budget in japan? They are slapping this out like once ever week? Usually tv series like this have bad art work.

  • I mean 10 years ago story and plot used to build slower. Ever notice in Hollywood compared to 20-30 years ago how movies now adays are all bang boom action and speedy and don't have the slow build up. It's a culture change, I admit this culture change to this new generation may be harmful to the creation of new masterpieces, but Macross Frontier works.

  • . HELLO?!? Cells are no longer used. Of course quality isn't going to be the same. I'm going to say this right now get over that one argument on how art is slipping. Times change with the era. While story can be debatable. Art changes over time thats a given reguardless.

  • Actually, cels are still used, albeit in only one anime: Sazae-san, which has been airing since the late '60s.

Then agian, Studio Ghibli's Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is also cel-animated.

  • You are just too hung up on the past. Macross is still Macross. So far Frontier has lived up to the Macross franchise. You mention Clamp and how their art quality has slipped. Umm, remember Clamp's early work RG Veda and Tokyo Babylon was done with Cells

  • Plus to say Macross Frontier has shitty art makes you look like an ass. The art is done well. It's art style maybe different, but that is due to the difference in the era that macross 7 and Macross Frontier. I mean even Super Fortress Macross in 1982 had a fairly different art style compaired to Macross 7 and Macross Zero.

  • *sighs* i admit that nothing can compare to the art of the original macross but Otaking I think you are beign too narrowminded. One, anime now adays no longer is drawn with cells. Its mostly CG, or done by computers.

  • @Haiyami Yeah, you tell 'em! I see reason and agree with pretty much all of what you said.

  • That was done intentioanlly... in case you didn't notice, they translated the staff names and positions and placed them over the original kanji, so as to NOT CLUTTER THE SCREEN WITH GARBAGE.

Who cares about the original Japanese credits being visible when likely over half your viewing audience can't read it anyway? Plus it's being translated and proper credit is being given. Most fansubbers put their own names over/next to the original Japanese instead, often w/o translating the original staff

  • This seems to make some of your other comments hypocritical though, OtaKing. They clearly cover over the Japanese credits with the English translation. Yet you were complaining about similar situations in digisubs as far as signs were concerned.

(And if you like this, you should see the a.f.k. Zetsubo-sensei OPs ... they do a wonderful job converting the stuff to English, yet maintaining the feel of the original Japanese text)

  • Oh, and incidentally... LOOK AT HOW NICE MACROSS 7 LOOKS! It's my favourite TV show of all time for a good reason. And the music is insanely good. ANd the opening sequence is probably the best I've seen.

  • The music in the show is great, isn't it? And the OP/ED themes are awesome, too. I especially love the 2nd ED theme("dakedo baby!!").

Doesn't this all make you feel like an oldfag? It kinda does for me, but then when I compare digisubs to oldschool VHS fansubs, I don't feel so bad about it. lol!

  • Well, when I compare this masterpiece to the shitty new all-CG Macross Frontier, I want to weep. Also, the music in the new Macross is totally forgettable. I can't remember a single song... and that's after 8 episodes! And don't get me started on the horrible character designs and confusing, badly directed fight scenes...

Macross 7 is Macross incarnate. All that's good about Macross.

  • Hey ! I like the new show.

  • It's bland though, isn't it? 8 epsiodes in and still no edge-of the seat drama like Mac 7! Also, the art is highly inferior to, say Mac Plus or the movie. And the music is very very bland.

Just listen to this Macross 7 opening song! He has the voice of a god!

  • Well, I guess the newer anime do have less meaning or that feeling of intellectual superiority and genius plot. But for me if it's enjoyable that's all I need. Though I really liked Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I also think it might be more of a generation thing. I wasn't around when the older ones were on.

What do you think about anime like Code Geass then? I think the plot doesn't lose that much to Evangelion although it doesn't really have that "theme" if you like.

  • Um... Code Geass.... the art is too bland for me to watch it, is the problem! Have a look at Clamp's earlier work (especially RG Vega and Tokyo Babylon) and you might be shocked at how low their art has slipped.

Plus I wouldn't want to watch it dubbed! Haha!

  • Personal preference I guess, I like to new style of drawing XD

  • to think about it, You're the guy that was mentioned on Geek Nights ! Come on the show !

  • Who was mentioned on "Geek Nights?" Me? Or Otaking? If it was me, cool, I'm famous lol. I wouldn't mind coming on the show.. send me a private message?

  • @OtaKing77077

Code Geass is not made by Clamp.

Clamp only worked on the characters

    design.

I woudn't watch it dubbed either.

Some things are just better off not being

    dubbed. Gundam comes to mind.

  • Well, I think you said it all in the description.

    Fansubbing at its best!
