Those dips in the water are hardly going to weaken the rat, maybe if it was under water a little longer. The Heron is more likely trying to dispel the taste of the rats urine. Rats will squirt piss out when they're threatened and I think this is what is happening here.

It is so sad and cruel a fate for the poor creature. This heron can give fish quick deaths, but a poor mammal has to suffer. The heron needs to eat, but it still breaks my heart to see.

Rats are so sweet and cuddly and mine become unhappy if they cannot snuggle up close to me as they can. I never let them out of my sight when we play outside for reasons like this!

@raw415 Well actually the reason why grey herons such as this one is dipping the rat in the water is to weaken and exhaust it, they don't really have the equipment to kill like a hawk since it really comes from fish eating birds...it swallows unusual prey alive whole because its of it. Fascinating but pretty cruel to see as well.
