@veniels the 7D 720p slow motion is quite difficult because there is alot of aliasing, the jaggies make it almost unusable in many cases. The Panasonic GH1 (with the firmware hack) has the best 720p and most detail of all the DSLRs. However, the GH2 was just announced and from the specs will most likely be the new DSLR king in this regard. Of course if you are a bit more serious about video the announced $4,999 Panasonic AF100 is coming too. The 5D is still the only one that is full still frame.
Hi, was just wondering what compression you used for the upload of this video. I use compressor and and having trouble achieving the same quality. Another problem I'm getting with footage from this camera uploaded to youtube is a slight jitteryness and horizontal flickering lines occasionally.
If the camera can only record 60fps at 720p, how would you go about integrating that footage with the normal speed 24fps at 1080i? I'm assuming you could just scale down the 1080i, but there would be a considerable quality change right?
Oh and your footage looked very well done. Good job.
Wow this is great. What an insane camera right? I've filmed at 720 at 60fps with a 7D, but I was wondering how and what program did you use to change it to exactly 24fps? The only way that I've figured out is to stretch the clip in the timeline. I'm using Sony Vegas.
What's the process for make a slow motion video like this. I have a 7D but I have no idea how to slow down the video in a way that is smooth and looks right.
this is true for a lot of young videographers I'm sure, I will let you know there is a great little hand held camcorder by Kodak called the Zi-8, it shots 1080p .MOV files. (which easily transfer to computer for editing) and the unit cost about 200 bucks....its a great little camera for young videographers and want to be film makers.
I really want to take pictures as well, but you're right, it is expensive for a young guy. I'll wait untill after my confirmation, maybe I'll get a camera then. Do you know what confirmation is? It seems like no one knows. And I'm one year late with my confirmation too :P
Confirmation? Isn't that some type of thing you do after you're able to get communion and all that? I did it in the 7th grade but I didn't know what I was doing, my parents just made me do it. lol.
It's like you say that you belive in God, Jesus and the holy spirit (Or what it's named in English.) Because the church wants it to be up to you and not your parents weher you are Christian or not there for you have the Confirmation.
@MaxMultimediaHD Yes, the basic concept is slowing the footage down properly (from 60p to 24p, 60p to 30p, 60p to 25p PAL, etc.). Different scenarios are explained on the Vimeo description. Not sure why I got a thumbs down for my reference to the tutorial. That's the only comment I made here on YT about my tutorial...so it's not spam.. :-/
Stunning! I would be interested to see this spliced together with the full-speed version. I mean, I understand 60fps to 24fps means it's a little less than 50% speed, but I'd still like to see the direct comparison.
24p has been used ever since sound was introduced to film. Before that it was 16-18 fps. 24p looks great because of it's film look. 30p and 60p are good for documentaries. Plus if you make a good film and want film prints, than you need to go with 24p.
My 60p doesn't look like 60p when I go to edit. I slow it down but there are no extra frames providing smoothness. When I do a playback in slowmo in camera they are there. Can any 7D owners give me a step by step of what to do? Thanks
You shoot in 60 frames per second, and when you go to edit, you make a project in 24p and slow the video down until it is slow but but still clear and not motion-blurry.
@McKIllaG5 It sort of looks a bit colour-corrected judging by all the saturation of the video. I'm not sure if this is raw footage so the actual thing may be slightly different but I agree. It looks a bit gross.
The SONY,Panasonic and JVC companys don't like videographers, they make HD camcorder for rich people. Why they don't make a 1/2 3CCD Shoulder Mount HD camcorder and record on a cheap media card around $6,000.00 dollars, but not, all that 6k to 8k camcorder come whit 1/3 stupid 3 CCD cheap. I make videos for living. This is the best HD video footage I see in Youtube and is NOT come from a camcorder, but a DAMM photographer camera.
This was one of the first high fps slow-motion clips I saw from the 7D. Thanks so much for putting it up here.
Question, did you ever find a good solution to the aliasing (stairstepping) in 720p? It seems most evident on the near railings on the diagonal high contrast areas.
Blurring the chroma channel helps get rid of rainbow moire pattern issues on small detail shots but not jaggies so much since it's the way it pixel bins to reach 720p. The only way I know to reduce the alias jaggies is to up-res and experiment rendering footage to 1080p and then scale back down and render that footage back to 720p using mark's supersampling method watch?v=FDTCa8mXZOk a pain but it seems to work
i have a 7d,it only shoots 50p, not 60p, but its ok.i cant seem to make decent slowmo i have FCE 4.0.1, and i've tried to download twixtor plugins, but they dont work (it says twixtor failed to render). is there a way i can make decent slow motion? when i slow it down using the 'speed' setting, it jerks and becomes unsmooth.
@mimisico0417 you have to cram the 50p frame rate into a 25p timeline to get 50% perfect slow motion. what the speed option in FCE does is just stretch the clip out frame by frame, making it jerky and choppy. FCE doesnt have a way to compress the 50p to 25p, but i know that final cut studio does. it's called cinema tools and you gotta run it through that and have it play back at 25p
the bigger the better, will hold more video clips. I use a 32gb card. You just can't shoot for more than 12 minutes straight without stopping and starting shooting again.
None of us knew what compression was before we knew what compression was, right? Let a newbie be a newbie. Soon enough that person will know. It has nothing to do with dumb or smart.
cool, I this is always the kind of stuff I like to see when looking at new cameras so glad I could help out. Also check out my anamorphic lens test with the 5dmk2 in the video response spot.
this was taken with a pre-production model, not by me. I only converted to slow motion and re-colored it. Links to the original footage are in the sidebar.
yeah the higher the frame rates compared to your base frame rate speed, in this case 24, the slower the motion. The new 7D will do up to 24/25/30/50/60 at a nice high bitrate.

i have a 7d,it only shoots 50p, not 60p, but its ok.i cant seem to make decent slowmo i have FCE 4.0.1, and i've tried to download twixtor plugins, but they dont work (it says twixtor failed to render). is there a way i can make decent slow motion? when i slow it down using the 'speed' setting, it jerks and becomes unsmooth.
i'd appreciate any help at all
thanks
mimisico0417 2 years ago
@mimisico0417 you have to cram the 50p frame rate into a 25p timeline to get 50% perfect slow motion. what the speed option in FCE does is just stretch the clip out frame by frame, making it jerky and choppy. FCE doesnt have a way to compress the 50p to 25p, but i know that final cut studio does. it's called cinema tools and you gotta run it through that and have it play back at 25p
