Classic. Is this the whole clip? Prior to being on DVD, it seemed like the Mike character got back into his and had to turn around and drive back to sing his part. Whatever the case, I laughed the first time I saw this and still do. RIP (the comedy of ) Rick Moranis.
Every time I hear this song, I smile and giggle because it always reminds me of this sketch. It's one of the main reasons I LOVE SCTV! Keep up the good work, guys!
SCTV... All the members have gone on to do some great projects, but when I see their names I always remember these times. Does anyone have a clip of Gerry Todd's clip of (bing)Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young performing "White..dododododo Christmas"?
@tooheys1968 Found it! I searchrd a few months ago, and it wasn't here. Now here it is. Flaherty, Levy, Thomas, and Moranis! Rick Moranis, as Gerry Todd, gets to watch and 'critique' his own performance.
Proud Canadian here.....well except any month that has an "R" in it, and just wanna say cheers for uploading this. This was classic back then as it is now.
Just watched Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald do this song last night on Jimmy Fallon with The Roots and it reminded me of this hysterical bit. Cracks me up every time.
It's still funny as hell! The laugh track sux! The cast didn't like it either. They supposedly had the best laugh track guy in the biz doing it, but that's like being the world't tallest midget.
@imtheslime2 Uh, didn't they say on one of the dvd's that in Edmonton he was a chicken farmer by day, and didn't get the humor, so he just put it in during pauses?
i work in retail and on many of the songs piped in , its crazy how many songs he sings back up on. it pokes fun at that and how he probably makes a decent living at this.
Ahh, Michael McDonald... at that time period he was always providing great back-up vocals for great artists such as Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, et. al. Because of this, this spoof seems so realistic....Michael running from gig to gig to record backup vocals. Hilarious!
Harry Shearer wasnt on SCTV. It is definetly Rick in the clip. I am old enough to remember the original airing of the episode so I know this to be true.
Today, 106.9 is pretty much the typical price you see at the pump around town in Vancouver.
I really have forgotten how cheap gas used to be. Filling up never used to be a a real budgetary concern for me. Nowadays, I have to think about how much gas I can afford for the next two weeks.
Over the same period of nearly 30 years, payday has risen far less in relation to the prices of everything.
I don't think it is the real Michael McDonald or Christopher Cross portraying themselves on the SCTV and Yacht Rock clips. Anytime it is a parody, the real individuals are never involved.
If you type in the phrase 'Yacht Rock Episode 4' and view the clip from 1:43 to 2:19, it shows a parody of Christopher Cross viewing the SCTV video and having a laugh about it.
What is so funny about this video, is that Rick Moranis looks more like Michael McDonald in this clip than almost everyone else who's imitated him... LMAO @ this video still.
No, I don't think so. Michael McDonald is a bit taller, facial features are a bit finer, and when he talks his voice doesn't sound the same as when he sings.
Last couple comments about the datedness or lack of it are interesting. I'll bet the MM joke dated (though there was that reference in the 40 Year Old Virgin), but I think the freaky perfection of the Gerry Todd character probably still works for current senses of humor. SCTV was incredible sometimes, really subtle.
@MillBelater It's still funny as hell. especially the end where he talks like he sings. i'm so happy i found other people who find great humor in mr. mcdonald's vocal style but also enjoy his music as much.
@rudobuquadrant - I love Mike McD, too. But I agree that it was really funny hearing 'him' talk the same way he sings. Search youtube for the clip of Rick Moranis on SCTV doing 'Gordon Lightfoot'.
It's amazing how obscure SCTV's comedy was, yet still works. This is funny all by itself, but it's twice as funny when you realize they were making fun of Michael McDonald's near omnipresence on the radio in 1981-1982 doing background vocals for practically every other song. (Earlier in this skit, too, they had him doing background vocals for a carpet commercial.)
He goes all the way there just to sing a few words! LOL! I do voice over work and once had to travel across town to deliver three words. "Aw hell no!" They liked the first take so that was it. It was a 2 hour round trip for 3 seconds in the booth.
And now Scott Shannon is doing True Oldies from his basement, and e-mailing it in. Actually probably using the automation software remotely. We've come a long way from calling in a second pair of hands to hit buttons in realtime on 4 cart machines, 3 cd players, the 2nd reel to reel and the turntable just for a 30 second wonder production. And then getting to :28, and being late on the last effect, and having to try take 74. /lawn, off it.
What .. no fart, sex, toilet, dildo, sperm jokes .... Oh Yeah .. I forgot ... this was when comedy was funny .... instead of degrading, base, and lazy ...
You, sir, have just made my week. I grew up watching SCTV, and a buddy of mine and I knew half of it by heart. He passed away not too long ago, and watching your ups brought a tear to my eye. Thank you!!!!!
