I went there last Thursday and he was nice enough to give me a short show of the console and let me watch him practice his recital pieces for the 4th. When he was done (waiting for another guest organist) he let me play a few pieces on it. It is amazing organ and a spectacular organist!
Does anyone happen to know the title of the music he is playing in the background. I have played it before and am drawing a complete blank on what it is.
I think this guy is the outstanding organist I have come across anywhere in the world. Its great to hear him talking so down to earth. Anyone like me who has heard him play Hymns at a joyous 115 Sunday Morning at the Cathedral gets a treat- I flew half way round the world to hear it- a magnificent performer who did much to make the whole experience unforgettable. I flew from England a couple of months ago especially- Never has a trip been more uplifting
DELIGHTFUL to encounter the personality of Scott Dettra. His Dad and I were in college together in the '60s, his Dad played for my wedding, and my ex was best man for Scott's parents' wedding. A charming person, unaffected by his superb talent. Long May He Reign Over the Great Skinner at The National Cathedral!!
Why are they rebuilding this famous Skinner Organ ? On the Church's website two Organ builders who are specialists in mechanical action have been approach and u mention the fact there will be a Organ at the east end containing most of the pipes in a new case from the Skinner Organ and then at the West End a four manual organ by another builder. This seems rather over the top to me !
The main reason prompting the rebuilt is a sound projection problem mainly due to the organ being design and built before the church's massive nave begun construction. In other words the organ is meant to be in a space less than half the size of the church as it stands. However despite the motives many organ buffs disagree with the rebuild citing the instrument's historical value. Ether way the last I heard the WNC has postpone the rebuild due to budget shortfalls.
