Did you change the switch at the side from being on mute to screen lock? If you did then change it back and mute/unmute it when something is playing audio, the sound will come back on and when it does, change the switch back to screen lock.

What happens is the iPad still thinks it's muted when it's not. Hope it works for you.

It sucks that this happened to you, but don't worry that you'll get a brand new one and better indeed. Talk about luck, I bought a 13 inch Macbook pro i5 and the first one came out with a dead pixel , then the second one was perfect with the exception of the left side on the bezel which was slightly opened, third one perfect and pristine :) When I buy Apple products I turn them on at the store and make sure that everything is perfect and inspect them well. Apple has great customer service.

It's most likely a weak solder joint that happened in the factory, I'm sure Apple has really high quality inspection protocols to prevent this kind of thing from happening, but sometime problems slip under the radar without detection, this happens with any product cheap or expensive, but unfortunately because Apple is always in the spotlight, people make mountains out of mole hills like this. It's happened to me once with a set of Christmas lights I bought years ago.
