  • this is my type of the music.

  • One of the GREAT bands ever! great lyrics, beautiful singing,heartfelt,romantic,calming,sweet,tender..Everysong perfection<3

  • Klimber1000

Yep, it is with regret, but it has been a long time, yeah, I guess there aren't time for regrets in life, but giving him up was and indeed still is, a BIG regret, and though I shouldn't I still wonder.. "What If"... he never married, and I married late... makes me wonder.. Yep, I too LOVE Bread

  • EVEN KISSES ARE SWEETER when you give them listening to this....

  • That picture look VEERY 70ISH.

  • i couldn,t agree more, David Gates is pure genius

  • I so love this song, I was maddly in love with my boy friend, and had visions of me surrendering to him... I never did!

  • god I wish they were touring still - come to Ireland and im there - memories of my first love on this one

  • This is so sweet and mellow. David Gates just has a very sweet, melodic lead voice.

  • No matter what is said, it is unarguable that this is one of our great talents.

  • Gates and Bread were icons of the 70's.Glad to have grown up with them.

  • I can never get enough of this song...So beautiful So smooth

  • Ah, yes, the time that people with talent made music, not just pretty people with some make-up a mic and autotune ofc

  • Thats the music.wonderful.

  • It's nice to have easy listening songs without the wise ass attitude of today's rap and hip hop!

  • What year was this released...... .

  • @violatormark I think '71

  • @violatormark hi, sweet surrender is from 1972. it,s on the guitarman album.

  • if only i could turn back the time,,,i prepare to stay in 70s,,,,,

  • again so many great memories.. parents gone, uncles and aunts gone , friends gone....sad

  • Great make out music

  • I loved growing up in the seventies. they dont write music like this anymore

  • @fishkabby You got that right!

  • Holy cow...I remember LOTS of high school snuggle time to BREAD -- mid-70s...when I see them in concert, it brings back all those great memories...of course, recent memories with BREAD playing in the background aren't too shabby! Thanks, guys!

  • @hisdrowningange Totally feeling you on that. These kids have garbage for music. Thats why I raised my daughter on all the old school music. Now she prefers it to todays JUNK! Of course none of her friends really know any of the music she does...lol!

    David Gates was a MASTER!

  • @daToinado I felt the same as you but just lately, she turned a 180 on me.Im losing my baby, shes 16,but my youngest.the only one of my kids i could communicate with in a rational way.HELP.

  • @daToinado Classic songs, timeless and plan to let my kids hear this too!

  • 5 dislikes :O :O what is wrong with them 5 people!! :O great song :)

  • David Gates' voice just makes me melt. You can keep all the junk that is turned out today. Thank goodness I was born in The Bread Generation.

  • @ markmc99 - you're right on ... music back in the era of Bread had an actual 'talent component' as opposed to today's 'contractual obligation' rubbish and record-company clones with their sequenced back-beats and such .... modern music is (mostly) crap

  • Here's to Bread and David Gates! Absolutely lovely music...every generation has their own "thing".... of course, we are attached to ours and feel we are superior.. this music evokes another time and place and I'm sure we all miss it! God Bless Bread and all the fabulous music they made and the wonderful memories we have to enjoy it by....peace to all

  • pure genious, David Gates and the rest of the band. timeless music that has no end..

  • Ahhh...a sweet surrender to pure music at it's finest. Thank God I was alive to hear and feel this...I'm from the 50's....this IS timeless.... :)

  • There's a reason why we have Legends - sound, melody, words, and meaning - something that they've lost today

  • The drop in standard and taste of popular music is trully appalling.

When I look at the top of the pops each year over the last 50 years, there has been an obvious and steady decline. How much lower can it go?

  • Butefull what a great groop .u go bread thums up.

  • its called "TIMELESS" it still sounds good today....thats what separates classic from shit.......just my opinion, but this still sounds fresh today, nearly 40 years after it was released.....again just my opinion

  • @chazrjr couldnt have said any better great group all thier songs BG

  • @chazrjr yes, yes, yes--that was the golden age of song--not repeatable today or the future--unfortunately....today the song writers are out, the synthesizers are in.

  • @chazrjr you got it still sweeyyttttt

  • @chazrjr you cant do better than great BG

  • @chazrjr sweet surrender i have the album

  • I truly enjoyed being a DJ during this ERA! Music was fit to listen to and you could actually hear the words to a song.

  • There is simply no music like this today! A beautiful blend of lyrics and softly enduring strings...

  • groups like bee gees, bread, carpenters, abba, nazareth, the temptations, cliff richard, they're just gonna be legends, living through our radios eh. all mostly love inspired songs. But look at the songs made now, all mostly sex inspired songs. good luck with that.

  • 4 guys with amazing talent. David Gates has a super sweet voice that can hit any all notes. What a talent. These guys were just fantastic. They will always be one of my all time favorites

  • I love these guys.

They inspired me to leave metal and play acoustic stuff. lol

  • I love how the strings come in at :38. What a great touch. And did anyone notice the contrary motion at :49 thru :53 between the strings and the vocal line? Very well-crafted. Strings go down, David sings up. They are the best.

  • I learned the simple, yet elegant solo of this song in about a half an hour. I love Bread's simplistic, catchy melodies. <3

  • David Gates has the voice of an angel.I remember listening to Bread tapes when i was 7 or 8 and I still love their music now

  • I LOVE BREAD!!! ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL! - Helen - Oakland, TN (just outside Memphis)

  • I'm from 1969, so I was a baby. But I love this music. It's timeless. And oh so beautiful.

  • why does he have to surrender, was he finally put in jail for leaving her?

  • I LOVE THIS SONG and all of BREAD'S songs!! Thank you for sharing it!!

  • Bread hit #15 in Billboard, 12-30-72. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • Just so pretty - pretty chords, pretty voice - WHAT A CONCEPT!!!! Thank God for 70s music!!!!!!!

  • I LOVED the "caterpillar" cover used for Elektra's 45s in the early '70s!

  • "I'm giving up myself to you, but I didn't really lose at all". Brilliantly phrased line, and it works so well in this song. I'm a huge fan of Bread's simplicity. They crafted short, yet catchy melodies with smart lyrics.

  • oh my god had t come back to this..love it so much xxx

  • never like the bread they were sort of cheesy for me!

  • I was one of the promotion team at Elektra late 60's early 70's. Bread was a pleasure to work with. As to Davids pants, I don't get it, he was a Mormon if that has any bearing. Maybe he was just WELL endowed. I loved them than and I love them now. They just wrote and recorded great songs. Jac Holzman (founder and Pres at Elektra) had the best ears in the business.

  • @nilessiegel1 how lucky...you had CARLY SIMON & JUDY COLLINS, too. Not to mention SAILCAT!

PS. I bought this 45 back in '72.

  • @JonKonLA Yeah, Sailcat, "and we'll take a ride on my Harley" We also has Swamp Dogg's album "Rat On" as well as the Doors, Paul Siebel, Harry Chapin, and The Stooges. It was the coolest label to work at at that time.

  • I like bread if i was young and there is change

  • Gorgeous. Thanks very much!

  • 53 yrs old and grew up on Bread . . . how great they are!

  • bread is one of the best american bands of all time! they were original, their songs were written from the heart and not copied....

  • I have loved Bread for forever !! This is wonderful ! David Gates is brilliant as are the rest of the group ! Thank you so much for putting this song up!

  • 39yrs old......OH WHAT A SWEET SURRENDER

  • 51 now and this still sounds current to me today, of course I am bias towards the 70's AND the 80's too, classic sound and lovely harmonies too.....

  • David Gates and Bread ..... as brilliant today as they were all those years ago ...

  • David Gates is one of the greatest pop songwriters.I dare someone to write songs like he did.

  • Loved this song as a teen, 51 now and love it as much as back them.

  • It's songs like this that make one look back and wonder how they came up with the utter SHIT for music we have today

  • @hisdrowningangel So True! Todays music is not like this!!!!

  • @hisdrowningangel -- isn't odd how when we're kids we think the generation preceeding us has utter SHIT for music, and then as we age, suddenly it's the genreation after us?? Hmmmm ....there's some amazing music today -- go google "Jar of Hearts" or "All I wanna do is Rock" by Travis ...

  • @hisdrowningangel I like this song *and* I like a lot of music we have today. The young people today make awesome music. Just turn off that god-damn radio and the corporate crap that's fed to the masses.

Folks...stop dissing today's musicians en masse. God hasn't given up on music.

  • @hisdrowningangel @shariphil infairness to the kids u are talking abt lady gaga is one hell of a kind lol...bt im still up to the 70s and 80s lol...i love bread and if i hv to choose i will still be inlove and die listening to this kind of music......peace..

  • @hisdrowningangel I sort of agree with you, but back then (I am in my 60's now) my father would once in awhile tell me about my music back then, and would say it was all "crap", each generation I guess is different in its taste for music and we just got to let each generation be! But I have to say, our music back then was some good music..I am just glad that I grew up during this time..

  • @hisdrowningangel

Thats simple...they can't sing, they don't play their own instruments, they can't write their own music...but they can scream, rap, and make millions...glad I grew up when I did....

  • @tezukahervin Thats funny,I just finished fucking Gretchen Alcontin in her fat ass,can you bring us back a six pack of beer were both very thirsty?

  • Comment removed

  • absolutely adore this song,,,,xxx

  • love this. My tape is pretty near dead; now for a CD!

  • this band brings back memories of my dad singing to me when i was young...makes me cry..happy tears...i love him sooo much i hope he knows it xxx

  • my friend david got me into this band before he passed away. RIP david

  • i cant even imagine how many girls these guys fucked.

  • David Gates just makes me smile! Every song is better than the last.

  • ....... I wish he would leave my head, get out of my mind, while I curl up alone in my bed wishing I was beside him, i know he isn't alone......and never even thinks of me. Life is unfair, to really love and care for someone for years who doesn't love you back, it hurts like nothing else...then i close my eyes & Dream of him.

  • @wickedwahine76

sweetheart, don't give him any more of your life. The chance that you have met the only person in your life that you could ever love is negligible. It's just not mathematically possible, even taking into account the shared values that come from geographical proximity...Eek, I sound nerdy, but you get what I mean. THERE IS ANOTHER 'HE' OUT THERE, go get him, Tiger. Good luck xxx

  • @Ninevah77 Thank you - but I just don't Date anymore. I run on the Beach, Dance & love on my Dog :) maybe I'll run into a Dog loving, Beach running kind of guy :)))

  • @wickedwahine76 yeah who needs relationships, just let the mexicans create the next race after all living in a third world hell hole has its perks now doesnt it?

  • @okrabay - Love Love Love , Love Love Love, Love Love Love .....It's easy....... All You need is Love, All You need is Love, All You need is Love Love, Love is all you need :)))

  • @wickedwahine76 I kwow what you mean, I have not dated in a year, women are not what they used to be. And on dogs, when I visit my old hometown, Charleston SC. I love to run with my Bluetick on Isle of Psalm beach.

  • Lyrics that could be understood unlike today's crap that is out there on the market today. Listen closely to the recordings can you hear each instrument being played and not this overlapping crap. Can you hear the words clearly? When music was music. Each instrument has their own recorded space and fits very tightly together. Makes it blend so well doesn't it. You don't get that as much today.

  • @jaybird197122 Today's 'performers' have replaced yesterday's 'artists' and the public seems none the wiser. Would you believe an orchestral cover by Andre Kostelanetz brought me back to the original?!!! My channel's got 111 playlists for every year since 1900. You'll hear the sounds you described so well on them! chuck

  • Congratulations to Bread, they managed to get me more chilled than ever :)

  • bread really knew how to write great song!

  • truly treasurable and man so glad we had them in our lives...

  • Thank you so much..this is one of breads classics..!!!

  • Thank you for posting this David Gates/Bread classic among ALL their classics! Margie Joseph did a respectable cover in 1974. Check out another overlooked Bread classic later turned into a dance anthem: "Hold Tight." DAVEDJ

  • They were among the very best then.

  • Linda demais, Ah!!!! Saudades de vocês filhos do lado da mamãe ouvindo bread e América.

  • This is my favourite by Bread. A lovely record.

  • i always love this band. in the philippines during sunday or even weekday nights they play this kind of song.. i miss my place.. ;c no offense but im kindah fed up with the new songs nowadays.. i like to go back to the old time ;c..

  • Another fabulous song by the great group Bread. For those of us who are old enough to remember what good music was and will be forever.

  • My little girls used to tell me 'play Bread mommy!" just a few years ago. Glad they appreciate the 'golden age' of music.

  • Absolutely LOVE this track !!!! :)

  • @lakeladymel, Right?! LOL hahaha

  • Love the Band... I think Dave forgot his drawers that day for the photo shot. Although, it was the seventies.

  • The pepper in David Gates's pants, no girl would believe that! ha ha ha ha Like the song though... Really, don't have to impress me. LOL

  • @TheCandaceH OMG,Candace ! I can't stop laughing. Between the pepper & that sweet voice, how could any girl resist him . Very gifted guy !

  • @JesusChristsuxCocks

    lol too funny

  • One of their best. They were on the downslope of their career when this came out, so it wasn't as big as earlier hits.

  • Simple song, pure greatness. Bread will be playing on the radio 20 years from now. Can you imagine Justin Bieber or Lady Gag on an oldies station 20 years from now?

  • @markmc99

    no

  • @markmc99 my point exactly i am 17 and i tell people that these so called artists will be popular for 5 years at the most and then disappear off the face of the earth real musicians last forever and are timeless in their music and talent

  • @markmc99 How bout this? It's 2053...the rest home has a young white kid, we'll call him "Rabbit", comin in to do Emimem tunes (did I say tunes?). I can just see all those Octogenarians dancin around to "fuck you mutha fucka", with the hand signs and shit, while they pass out the roid creme....kind of like they do now with Jolson...only different. ; ), "Hey grandma! your favorite, 'Bust yo ass Bitch', is comin up next! Man I be one cynical mofo ya'all..."word"...whatever the fuck that means.

  • @markmc99 Yeah man...music was sublime back then. This is a great song. Thank God the sound track of our lives was this, and not what they're getting now, very sad.

  • @markmc99 - nope, not a prayer mate .... they need a film-clip to sell the song. Writers like David Gates did not ;)

  • @markmc99 maybe not bieber or gaga but in 20 years i want to hear Coldplay or Keane in an oldies station

  • @markmc99

    In a word? NO!

  • I LOVE IT NOW AS MUCH AS WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT!

    helen

  • Who are the two jackholes who voted "dislike?"

  • I have just bought the best of Mainly for "Gutair Man"

& I love every song on the cd including this one ;-)

  • I agree with previous comments. This is one of the most underrated bands of all time.

their music had kick ass lyrics and the harmonies were just to precise. the way they brought in the violins on someo of their music still blows me away. I'm so glad I was fortuante to be born when I was to really enjoy the best of the best in good old rock and roll!

  • These guys were the creme de la creme. They could still be making sweet music if it was up to me. I LOVED them.

  • Bread is an underrated band. When I hear this, I remember hearing it on FM dial at the beach with a warm breeze and the scent of coconut oil in the air. Their compositions/lyrics of many of their songs were masterpieces.

  • @KyrieEleison46

You hit it right on the head. Masterpieces!

  • add on to my last post, I think it was considered cool to like stuff the Sex Pistols and the Clash not that the music was all the great anyway. Well maybe the Clash was good but the Pistols really weren't all that anyway.

  • That is the thing, it wasn't cool to like this stuff but I always did. But back in the 70's if some of my friends were going through my albums and, along side Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, and even Kiss albums if there was a Bread album or even the Carpenters, I probably said they belonged to my sister. But guess what folks? They were mine and I am proud to say so now. A little after this the Sex Pistols and Clash fans probably didn't like Nugent, etc either but I like that and Bread better too.

  • @kentaappel

Ha, ha.. that's funny... I could dig Black Sabbath & a few minutes later, put a Bread album on.. I'm right there with 'ya !

  • Hey look at the guy with the stripped pants....I think he has a couple pairs of socks in his undies... LMFAO

  • It's funny, I'm 38 and was brought up in a culture created by trendies and Punk-oldies who told us to hate this stuff. But I realise now that I much prefer bands like Bread and stuff like Jackson Browne, The Eagles and ELP than music like The Sex Pistols and The Clash - which truth be told, hasn't dated well at all.

  • To answer SioPopu's question "where are they now?"... Alas, David Gates (far left) is the only member of Bread shown in this photo still living. Larry Knetchel (2nd from left) died last August of a heart attack, and both drummer Mike Botts (2nd from right) and guitarist Jimmy Griffin (right) died of cancer in 2005. Great guys, great group. Their music only improves with age.

  • This photo set-up is awkward. They are standing in front of a tropical plant wearing winter clothes, it does not flow... like this tune does.

  • This is an awesome tune!

  • What a fuck.

I was thinking that Bread was bad and stupid.

    Where are they now ?????

    This is beautifull.

  • @ hjbpnb : yeah ur right I really hate the songs now.

  • wow nice audio good stuff got 7 0r 8 now on my playlist

  • Why can't songs like this be made anymore ???

These guys had TALENT !!! now ...nah !!!
