@chazrjr yes, yes, yes--that was the golden age of song--not repeatable today or the future--unfortunately....today the song writers are out, the synthesizers are in.
groups like bee gees, bread, carpenters, abba, nazareth, the temptations, cliff richard, they're just gonna be legends, living through our radios eh. all mostly love inspired songs. But look at the songs made now, all mostly sex inspired songs. good luck with that.
4 guys with amazing talent. David Gates has a super sweet voice that can hit any all notes. What a talent. These guys were just fantastic. They will always be one of my all time favorites
I love how the strings come in at :38. What a great touch. And did anyone notice the contrary motion at :49 thru :53 between the strings and the vocal line? Very well-crafted. Strings go down, David sings up. They are the best.
"I'm giving up myself to you, but I didn't really lose at all". Brilliantly phrased line, and it works so well in this song. I'm a huge fan of Bread's simplicity. They crafted short, yet catchy melodies with smart lyrics.
I was one of the promotion team at Elektra late 60's early 70's. Bread was a pleasure to work with. As to Davids pants, I don't get it, he was a Mormon if that has any bearing. Maybe he was just WELL endowed. I loved them than and I love them now. They just wrote and recorded great songs. Jac Holzman (founder and Pres at Elektra) had the best ears in the business.
@JonKonLA Yeah, Sailcat, "and we'll take a ride on my Harley" We also has Swamp Dogg's album "Rat On" as well as the Doors, Paul Siebel, Harry Chapin, and The Stooges. It was the coolest label to work at at that time.

Lyrics that could be understood unlike today's crap that is out there on the market today. Listen closely to the recordings can you hear each instrument being played and not this overlapping crap. Can you hear the words clearly? When music was music. Each instrument has their own recorded space and fits very tightly together. Makes it blend so well doesn't it. You don't get that as much today.
@jaybird197122 Today's 'performers' have replaced yesterday's 'artists' and the public seems none the wiser. Would you believe an orchestral cover by Andre Kostelanetz brought me back to the original?!!! My channel's got 111 playlists for every year since 1900. You'll hear the sounds you described so well on them! chuck
Thank you for posting this David Gates/Bread classic among ALL their classics! Margie Joseph did a respectable cover in 1974. Check out another overlooked Bread classic later turned into a dance anthem: "Hold Tight." DAVEDJ
i always love this band. in the philippines during sunday or even weekday nights they play this kind of song.. i miss my place.. ;c no offense but im kindah fed up with the new songs nowadays.. i like to go back to the old time ;c..
Simple song, pure greatness. Bread will be playing on the radio 20 years from now. Can you imagine Justin Bieber or Lady Gag on an oldies station 20 years from now?
@markmc99 my point exactly i am 17 and i tell people that these so called artists will be popular for 5 years at the most and then disappear off the face of the earth real musicians last forever and are timeless in their music and talent
@markmc99 How bout this? It's 2053...the rest home has a young white kid, we'll call him "Rabbit", comin in to do Emimem tunes (did I say tunes?). I can just see all those Octogenarians dancin around to "fuck you mutha fucka", with the hand signs and shit, while they pass out the roid creme....kind of like they do now with Jolson...only different. ; ), "Hey grandma! your favorite, 'Bust yo ass Bitch', is comin up next! Man I be one cynical mofo ya'all..."word"...whatever the fuck that means.
@markmc99 Yeah man...music was sublime back then. This is a great song. Thank God the sound track of our lives was this, and not what they're getting now, very sad.
I agree with previous comments. This is one of the most underrated bands of all time.
their music had kick ass lyrics and the harmonies were just to precise. the way they brought in the violins on someo of their music still blows me away. I'm so glad I was fortuante to be born when I was to really enjoy the best of the best in good old rock and roll!
Bread is an underrated band. When I hear this, I remember hearing it on FM dial at the beach with a warm breeze and the scent of coconut oil in the air. Their compositions/lyrics of many of their songs were masterpieces.
add on to my last post, I think it was considered cool to like stuff the Sex Pistols and the Clash not that the music was all the great anyway. Well maybe the Clash was good but the Pistols really weren't all that anyway.
That is the thing, it wasn't cool to like this stuff but I always did. But back in the 70's if some of my friends were going through my albums and, along side Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, and even Kiss albums if there was a Bread album or even the Carpenters, I probably said they belonged to my sister. But guess what folks? They were mine and I am proud to say so now. A little after this the Sex Pistols and Clash fans probably didn't like Nugent, etc either but I like that and Bread better too.
It's funny, I'm 38 and was brought up in a culture created by trendies and Punk-oldies who told us to hate this stuff. But I realise now that I much prefer bands like Bread and stuff like Jackson Browne, The Eagles and ELP than music like The Sex Pistols and The Clash - which truth be told, hasn't dated well at all.
To answer SioPopu's question "where are they now?"... Alas, David Gates (far left) is the only member of Bread shown in this photo still living. Larry Knetchel (2nd from left) died last August of a heart attack, and both drummer Mike Botts (2nd from right) and guitarist Jimmy Griffin (right) died of cancer in 2005. Great guys, great group. Their music only improves with age.
the 8 people who dislike this, i would like to hit them in the face with a pie

Thank you for posting this David Gates/Bread classic among ALL their classics! Margie Joseph did a respectable cover in 1974. Check out another overlooked Bread classic later turned into a dance anthem: "Hold Tight." DAVEDJ

Another fabulous song by the great group Bread. For those of us who are old enough to remember what good music was and will be forever.

My little girls used to tell me 'play Bread mommy!" just a few years ago. Glad they appreciate the 'golden age' of music.

Love the Band... I think Dave forgot his drawers that day for the photo shot. Although, it was the seventies.

The pepper in David Gates's pants, no girl would believe that! ha ha ha ha Like the song though... Really, don't have to impress me. LOL

@TheCandaceH OMG,Candace ! I can't stop laughing. Between the pepper & that sweet voice, how could any girl resist him . Very gifted guy !

One of their best. They were on the downslope of their career when this came out, so it wasn't as big as earlier hits.

Simple song, pure greatness. Bread will be playing on the radio 20 years from now. Can you imagine Justin Bieber or Lady Gag on an oldies station 20 years from now?

@markmc99 my point exactly i am 17 and i tell people that these so called artists will be popular for 5 years at the most and then disappear off the face of the earth real musicians last forever and are timeless in their music and talent
loveanddeth1994 7 months ago
@markmc99 How bout this? It's 2053...the rest home has a young white kid, we'll call him "Rabbit", comin in to do Emimem tunes (did I say tunes?). I can just see all those Octogenarians dancin around to "fuck you mutha fucka", with the hand signs and shit, while they pass out the roid creme....kind of like they do now with Jolson...only different. ; ), "Hey grandma! your favorite, 'Bust yo ass Bitch', is comin up next! Man I be one cynical mofo ya'all..."word"...whatever the fuck that means.
Waszma 7 months ago
@markmc99 Yeah man...music was sublime back then. This is a great song. Thank God the sound track of our lives was this, and not what they're getting now, very sad.
Waszma 7 months ago
@markmc99 - nope, not a prayer mate .... they need a film-clip to sell the song. Writers like David Gates did not ;)

@markmc99 maybe not bieber or gaga but in 20 years i want to hear Coldplay or Keane in an oldies station

JustAGuyNamedSteve1 1 year ago
These guys were the creme de la creme. They could still be making sweet music if it was up to me. I LOVED them.

Well maybe the Clash was good but the Pistols really weren't all that anyway.
kentaappel 1 year ago
That is the thing, it wasn't cool to like this stuff but I always did. But back in the 70's if some of my friends were going through my albums and, along side Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, and even Kiss albums if there was a Bread album or even the Carpenters, I probably said they belonged to my sister. But guess what folks? They were mine and I am proud to say so now. A little after this the Sex Pistols and Clash fans probably didn't like Nugent, etc either but I like that and Bread better too.

Ha, ha.. that's funny... I could dig Black Sabbath & a few minutes later, put a Bread album on.. I'm right there with 'ya !

KRLA1110 1 year ago
This photo set-up is awkward. They are standing in front of a tropical plant wearing winter clothes, it does not flow... like this tune does.
