  • Sounds like wrong chord in the intro

  • Hi CroissantOrange

You mean the Bb to F should be Bb to F minor?

A sheet music transcription of the chord voicings at songtrellis(dot)com and also 'The Real Book II' use Bb and F.

But as for chord changes during the solo for the A part, it starts with F minor. The A section chords are F min, Ab9, G7, C7 according to The Real Book II.

  • Very nice!

  • I've learnt almost half of this from watching your video now! This is so good! Its really useful for a relative beginner like me to see exactly where your fingers go as I still struggle to hear the notes sometimes. Just wondering what simple chords or scales would be good to improvise with on this.

  • Thanks bemaniac!

It's good to hear that you found this video of use for your own playing.

I like too see hands movements myself, and I record with an overhead camcorder view in case others also do that.

To get you going improvising I would suggest you to use the modern dorian scale in the key of F during the A part of the song. For the B part you can go for F blues pentatonic, but remember to play directly against the Gm7 and C7 during the last two bars of the B part.

  • Why are you resolving the two chord response in the right hand to a major?

  • Hi overlordspencerman

Do you mean those two Bb and F repeated chords in the A section of the song, where both the Bb and the F are major chords? My answer is that those chords are what I hear in the song. I hope I understood your question correctly.

  • @rounder2u If I remember correctly it is Bb major and then F minor. Your version sounds fine though, it's just that, to me, the song is in a minor feel and groove. I base this on my opinion of how it sounds - apparently though the idea for the song came from so what.

  • Thanks overlordspencerman!

You got me curious and I just checked out if I could find some chords for Moanin'. First I found a sheet music transcription of the chord voicings at songtrellis(dot)com and then I also found the song in the 'not so official' The Real Book II. Both places use Bb and F.

But as for chord changes during the solo for the A part, it starts with F minor. The A section chords are F min, Ab9, G7, C7 according to The Real Book II.

  • Hello again!

l just want to give you a little advice. The organ sounds better without using the tonewheel mode vintage 2. l have dowloaded some of your songs in mp3 and put it in my mobile phone to listen at them but in headphones it doesn´t sounds nice. most when you don´t use the drive.

  • Hi glamheden

I like the Vintage 2 setting, and if there was an even more road-warrior dirty Vintage 3 setting I'd be using that :-)

The main problem as I see it, is the way YouTube encodes audio. It could be done much better by YouTube, as audio is not a bandwidth hog.

Anyway, send me a message to my inbox here at YouTube if you want me too send you the high quality MP3-version of this take :-) Then check it out in you player without applying any EQ or adjustments.

  • Wow! great playing. This tune is always in my head, and you did a great job highlighting this classic standard.

    Thanks!

  • I have to say...I prefer Mingus' version of Moanin'. Being a baritone sax player how couldn't I?

Anyway, you played this great Rounder. I enjoyed listening.

  • Thanks gnasher!

Almost every great jazz cat has played Moanin' wich means we might all have our own favourite :-)

My top two versions of Moanin' is the original version from 1958 with the Jazz Messengers (it has such a mighty and dense but still swinging athmosphere during the melody parts), and the other is the Rhoda Scott version (she has such a joie de vivre in her version).

  • I meant the Mingus tune Moanin'. It's a completely different tune. It's almost as though he heard the original and went "Hey, that aint Moanin'!" so he wrote a Baritone sax shout piece...

  • Yes! She is playing it in a very nice beat or how you say. but then if you hear how nice jimmy smith hammond sound is on that song you will like it too!

  • Hi glamheden

Oh yes, I have listened a number of times to Jimmy Smith's great and mighty big band version of Moanin' here at YouTube!

I just happen to like Rhoda Scott's version even more :-)

PS. I was pretty sure that I would find a number of versions of Jimmy playing Moanin' in my J.O.S. collection, but I didn't found a single one to my surprise. I just searched the net and could only find one record (Black Cat) of him with Moanin' - and I don't have that record.

  • oooh, l love this! l have listen at it so many times with rhoda scott and jimmy smith, it´s a very flexible song!

  • Hi glamheden

    Thanks!

I have Rhoda Scott's wonderful version of Moanin' in my list of favourites since long. Her version is the best I've heard of this song.
