  • It has the sweetest folk tune i"ve ever heard in my life

  • Big Macintosh's Theme?

  • this is my favourite song by jethro tull too

    this song is a prophecy

  • Thanks for the awesome slide-show of lyrics. This is a very cool song,.......and that is severe understatement. =)

  • @jonnybgoode007 your welcome :) and you're definitely right.

  • love heavy horses xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • I Have heavy horses and its a great song ! as are all from "Songs of the wood" - masters of music and language - not like "Crap": music today

  • This is by far my favorite Jethro Tull song. Wind Up is close too, and certainly quite a few others, but those two are the first I think.

  • @JonOfTheShred i can totally understand. :)

  • Love you, Jethro Tull, your the best ever rock 4EVER!

  • thanx for this classic

  • Jethro Tull is the most complete band i've ever heard. Ian Anderson has a wonderful voice and plays the flute with such a technique, Martin Barre is one of the greatest guitarists in the universe, Clive Bunker, and excelent drummer, and the rest of the band are just genious, you will be surprised and won't think the same as me because you only hear the typical music, Iron Maiden, U2, etc (great bands too), but you won't think the same of Jethro Tull, because they choosed to be less commercial

  • I just left my dad's balls and I love this song!

  • It's not just a song, it's a complete feeling. Thank you for uploading!

  • @142Zoli szívesen ;)

  • @willicat441 - this IS a poem, and it's not originally by Ian. He did it a great service setting it to music though.

  • Almost all of Ian's lyrics are poetry set to music. He obviously is a great reader, his articulation is spot on, and has fun playing with juxtaposition of words and meanings...

  • Thank you for the video. Love that song!!

  • i tought i heard everything music had to offer dylan beatles stones van morrison tom waits patti smith bruce, bowie ...... And then you hear this!

  • Budapest, he must hear it.!!!

  • One of my favorite songs.

Fast paced, mix of the orchistrated instruments and the Guitar, Bass, and Drums makes this perfect.

  • ez igazán anderson-os..

  • best song if him in my opinion

  • I saw them live yesterday (16th july) for the 5th time in my life and I recommend to any who thinks to see them in the upcoming months to go and buy the tickets immediately, because Ian is better than the past years in my humble opinion. I saw them also in 2008 and 2007 to mention the most recent years, but that 2011 gig was the best among the recent ones, so go and see them!

  • Well music like this simply is'nt made anymore....well of cause we have Lady ga ga, but.....eehhh...noo....never mind! ;)

  • I've always loved Tull - but for me this is their best ever song! The lyrics based on a poem called 'The Horses' by the Scotish poet Edwin Muir - I love John's bass playing on this track. Sucj a great band - their class shines through on every album.

  • 3 heavy horses' asses

  • When I hear this song, I always think how well Anderson would've fit in with Steeleye Span.

  • @endora60 Funny that, since he has played with StSp many times...

  • @molealto Really? I didn't know that. Very cool--I'll have to look it up and listen. Thanks for the heads-up, molealto.

  • There was never a band like Jethro Tull BEFORE they stepped on to the musical/pop/rock pantheon........and there has NEVER been a band like them still to this day in June 2011!!

  • Heavy horses ftw <3

  • This songs got the lot, fantastic lyrics, makes you visualize the entire song - (well it does me), time changes and a great tune - got to be their best song in my humble opinion.

  • He is a whirling dervish on stage. Love Tull

  • trés bonne chanson assez mediéval du Jethro Tull pure.

  • My dad hates Jethro Tull, he thinks Tull's just got 2 good songs: Aqualung and Locomotive Breath. Oh when will my dad see the light?

  • @TheFrickinPope good luck with your mission :)

  • @NaudaOfTheSilverHand Why like these two songs and the other ones not? I don't get it :D Anyway, everybody loves his father and mine doesn't even know J.T.

  • @TheFrickinPope at least your dad likes the same style of music. My dad can't even get into rock. And my boyfriend only "likes" too old for rock ' n roll...

So I am always alone listening and rocking to this great music. =(

  • @TheFrickinPope I agree with what you say. You also have an awesome YouTube username.

  • @TheFrickinPope

My Dad loves Jethro Tull, he think all his songs is good and specially this one.

I do like this song but not all of them. When will I see the light? :O

  • The back-to-back double of "My God" and "Budapest" put the crown on a great concert in Sydney...Not too sure what Doane was doing in Aqualung!

  • Have tickets for Sydney concert on 26/04/2011..can't wait!

  • listening to jethro tull around christmas gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

  • @pjiskool yes! hahaha

  • This song is truly beautiful. No better word to describe it, I don't think. Nope. Beautiful will do.

  • i can listen to this song on repeat all day <3

  • @LeakenaDoll It's quite obvious you're a teenager, but, how on earth can anyone like Avenged Sevenfold and Jethro Tull?

    Avenged Sevenfold are terrible.

  • @Pasalaqcua LOL I admire all kinds of ROCK.

  • This song literally squeeze the tears from my eyes. Especially since the fourth minute. I love this song just like the whole CD for the amazing atmosphere and a profound message contained in this text.

    Very, very good job. Thanks.

  • Been a while since I listened to this one. Gave me bloody goose bumps all the way through!

  • this the best lyrics i herad in my life

  • You have to admit, 1:53 - 2:07 sounds just like "the best part of waking up... is Folgers in your cup!"

    ...a subliminal coffee ad? :)

  • Brilliant lyrics; about something real, something other than love, lust or macho posturing...what a refreshing change. If you've ever had a chance to see a big draft horse up close, any breed, their magnificence will take your breath away.

  • u can't make better music than this..

  • A heavy horse and a tumbling sky, brewing heavy weather... Yes Sir!!!!!

Mr. Anderson at his magnificent musical quality.

  • Brilliant band, brilliant album, and brilliant track. Dont tou hate it when people think Jethro Tull is one guy, its a damn band!!!!

  • @TheTwinSeasons Yeah it is the BEST band ever, who took their name from a guy ;) look for it on wikipedia.

  • @NaudaOfTheSilverHand

Imeant that ppl think jethro tull is a solo artist, nd thier wrong; its a band. im well aware that jethro tull invented the seed drill. ;)

  • @TheTwinSeasons Yeah i know i was just joking around :)))

  • @NaudaOfTheSilverHand

lol, well thats ok then :)

  • @TheTwinSeasons Nah, people just think the leader singer's name is Jethro Tull. :P

  • @SabbraCadabra I'm from Poland. I know a man who for many years he was convinced that this is not band, only a single man and that his name is Jack Rothal. :-D I never was too bright.

  • @NaudaOfTheSilverHand for some reason they took their name from an English agriculturalist.

  • @NaudaOfTheSilverHand Yeah he invented the seed drill, which revolutionized agriculture around the world :-D

  • @HeyZeus096 Wow I just noticed someone already said that WHOOPS

  • @TheTwinSeasons Jethro Tull is one guy...Ian Anderson's gym teacher.

  • @TheTwinSeasons Yes.. it is, i agree!!!!

  • @TheTwinSeasons By the way. Which ones Tull? : )

  • @TheTwinSeasons Well... actually, it WAS one guy in the renaissance... the band is just named after him...

  • @TheTwinSeasons Yes! and that they don't know Jethro Tull was an artist!

  • @TheTwinSeasons "the band is just fantastic that is really what i think. oh by the way which one's jethro?"

  • @Tullvideoclips

    Why Pink Floyd?

  • @Tullvideoclips He's a guy from a long long time ago

  • amazing song. amazing lyrics, music, composition. what I like the most about Jethro Tull is that all of their songs are so well made in every aspect that it makes it hard to classify them in only a frame. there are so many excellent songs like heavy horses, witch's promise, bungle in the jungle, locomotive breath, living in the past, my god, hunting girl, bouree, thick as a brick...

My respect and admiration to Jethro Tull. Love your music!

  • This track is one of the best of the whole rock. Greetings from Poland

  • That "1" dislike must be an oil baron.

  • @fatheroflatus i think it's a misclick :D

  • @NaudaOfTheSilverHand There's two now; Mubarak?

  • Comment removed

  • @fatheroflatus I lol'ed

  • @fatheroflatus hahahaha

  • move the land under me...~

  • its been awhile but twas worth it....xcellent..

  • great video and amazing song very powerfull lyrics!!!

  • @urielginat If you think these lyrics are good, you should see Jethro Tull's forty-minute song "Thick as a Brick" There's so much metaphor in that, I can't tell what the song is actually about! These two songs are my competed favorites.

  • I love how the fiddles are used at 4:01 and 6:20

  • this is wut the woods, horses, air and trees would sing.

  • @crollo22 this is what they do sing. you only need to stop and listen :)

  • Oh yeah, i love this song. I had the comfort to see those times with my own eyes

  • brilliant! The modern music scene needs to hear this song - THIS is real music!

  • i love the beginning where the bass harmonize with the guitar :)

  • classy piece. but prove me wrong. wasn't plaughing with heavy horses a very modern method just a couple of years ago?.

  • classy piece. but prove me wrong. wasn't plaughing with heavy horses a very modern method just a couple of years ago?

  • I've been listening to this song over and over, there is so much to hear, the classical melodies, it's just awesome!

  • Enjoy your country around you where ever it maybe, look for naural food that has major health benefits to you and is good for the earth. One day you will be too late, think on!!

  • what a powerful and symbollic piece of music. One day this will become true, people will realise how the past methods are reliable especially when the oil has become dry. Todays life has lost the traditions that made every country great. How we rely on modern methods and technology, pre-packed food and convience foods that are only made from chemicals. When was the last YOU took a drive or a walk in the countryside and look upon natures gifts to us.

  • @DrPlum i absolutely concur. people are so fragle and vulnerable who rely too much on the products of civilized society and the modern technology.

You asked about me, so i must answer.

I live around 100 m from a huge forest, and whenever i go to the city, i go trough it. So, basically i'm close to nature whether i want it or not. I enjoy it... mostly.

  • @DrPlum I love this forest, when i was a kid, my brother took care of me a lot. He is 15 years older than me, thats why. And he knew very well what to do to make me enjoy the time i spent with him, so he took me to the forest for long long walks.

  • @DrPlum Then when i was 9, i became a scout, and since then, i spent a lot of time close to the nature.

Nowadays, i'm a little bit busy, but still, i don't like being inside buildings, whenever i can, i go outside. And in the summer i sleep on the balcony. :) It is wonderful to wake up after breathing the sweet clear air all night.

So, thats how i live, however i'm not a horseman, but i totally feel the song's power. That's why this song is my personal favourite.

  • @DrPlum You are also made from chemicals (Na, O, Mg, N...), but you don´t know.

  • @DrPlum pre packaged foods are not made from only chemicals. They may have chemicals in them, but are far from being only chemicals

  • sorry for my english...... much respect for this guys!!!! one of the greatest musics of all time!!! greatings from Brasil

  • I hope this doesn't make me sound sad, but it really brings a tear to my eye.

  • Thank you Jethro Tull for one of the best songs ever made

  • The song started to suck at 8:59

  • @brandinator22 Yeah, know what you mean. Excellent song.

  • @brandinator22 lol true!!

  • @brandinator22 that gave me a chuckle lol

  • @brandinator22

was about to "dislike", then realized your genius.

  • @brandinator22 no, jethro tull never sucks! NEVER! ^_^

  • Thank You. I enjoy this very much.

  • I come from a family in which these horses were....family?

My grandfather was the "best teamster in the woods" when teamsters had teams of horses and a love and pride to be named teamster.

    Love this tune.

My uncle, a singer of traditional tales, often from his schooner building greats and great greats... brings this one out if enough ale comes his way.

And does it justice, as he does all the old work and play songs of my ancestors. And it fits.

  • I was introduced to Jethro Tull thanks to one YouTuber by the name of AqualungGameReviews. Great music. This is one of the first Tull songs I heard, next to Aqualung, and while I barely know the lyrics, I like the melody of both of them.

  • This is one of my favorite Tull toons. I would also recommend Minstrel In The Gallery, Songs From The Wood, and Stormwatch as albums to check out. As for the eulogizing of the heavy horse, it is premature. Last summer I rode a Clydesdale and I have seen Percheron's and Shire Horses at local shows. While they may not pull plows, these wonderful animals are still very much with us. Check the internet and find a show in your area. Believe it or not I have seen Shire horses at dressage events.

  • Thanks for posting Nauda! I became a JT fan after the Aqualung Album was released. Saw them in Birmingham and Atlanta a few times in the late 70's. Thanks again, one of my favorite YouTube videos.

  • This isn't a song so much as a beautifully emotional euology to the the most wonderful animals and a time past. Mind you, the music's bloody good too. ;-)

  • @MaxDaMedic It is far to soon to give a euology to these great horses. In Saint Augustine Florida and Brookville Florida, Avalon East and Avalon west still still use Percherons and some Clydesdales for there carrage tours. More and more draft horses are finding a place in dressage and pleasure riding, there day is far from over.

  • Does anyone know if they intentionally based the verse melody on Dvorak's "Humoresque" as some kind of homage or something?

  • @jevicci I didnt hear about that, but considering that Ian likes classical music and he based some songs on classical music, i say its possible. (Bouree, Pavane, We Five Kings, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Aqualung for example)

  • @jevicci Thank you for indicating it. You are absolutely right! Thanks again.

  • @jevicci Yes, the melody in the strophes is very similar to a part of Humoresque, but I think it´s a random, it often happens to composers...

  • One of the greatest songs ever.

One of the greatest bands ever.

    Masters of symphonic rock.

  • Fully agreed, awesome song by an awesome band!!!

    5* + fav

    \m/ö\m/

  • I love this, and I agree Flogging Molly is amazing! They are great in concert too!

  • I have a bit of an odd request: I fell in love with this song when I heard it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I would like to find more songs that are like this. (Rock n' roll meets Irish balad) Does anybody have any recommendations of songs that are like this one that I might enjoy?

    Thanks in advance

  • Rock n' roll meets Irish balad = Flogging Molly. I recommend 'Float' and 'Wrong Company' to start with. :) have fun!

  • thanks a lot for the suggestions! keep 'em comin.

Flogging Molly actually isn't my favorite band but I like Wrong Company quite a bit.

  • @groovinonfunk Check out some other Tull, of course. Also take a look at a newer band, Tempest. And, from the same period as Tull, Fairport Convention, whose album "Lief and Liege" is typically considered the seminal British folk-rock album.

  • @groovinonfunk, Focus, Horslips, Mumford and Sons, Fleet Foxes, in the order ;)

  • @groovinonfunk try listening to some of Mike Oldfields older stuff

  • Ian Anderson is in a class all bye him self! His music is some of the very best music ever produced!

  • @bud4207

very best.. ding ding grammar alarm :P

just kidin i agree with you in that one

  • thanks for posting this lyrics version. it´s one of my favourite songs ever. it was also my first album - i was 12 and totally blown away by i.a.´s amazing voice and their unusual musical style... the raw power of the heavy horses is very much palpable through the song.

  • No, the chorus is kickass.

  • prog rock ruined it all, huh?

  • completely ruined it all... who wants INVENTIVE music?!?! Thumping bass is all you need!!! The more repetitive the better!!!

  • Well then they were ahead of their time if it sounds 80's since the song is from 1977

  • They were ahead of their time though! What a brilliant band.. Sadly, they are getting old, but the spirit of their music will fortunately never die :) This is my favorite Jethro Tull song. Fortunately I got to see them last year, hehe.

  • hell yeah!

  • Fantastic

  • Man, I was at the Ian Anderson concert last night in iceland...the crowd went CRAZY when he started playing this song!!! LOVE IT!!

  • Great song!

Heard it live last week in Warsaw, Poland.

    Great concert!

  • Another October comes and this song still touches me. Just like it has done for decades.

Some of you must be way younger than me, yet you like it. Which apparently means it is a real classic.

    Thanks Nauda.

  • Thanks!

  • good lyrical work - jethro tull is a great band and worth seeing in concert if they should tour again. i never heard this selection before but it is really good

  • In my opinion, Ian's best work as a lyricist. Thanks for posting.

  • I think this is Tull's best song. Opening up it's so delicate, it almost feels like it would break if you held it too tightly, but then it dives right in and sweeps you away. One of my favorite songs. Long live Tull!

  • i thik the same. its the best. :) magical. Ian is a true wizard! :D

  • i remember seeing the video of this song for the first time. i think (don't quote me on this or I'll deny the whole thing) it was on the 20th anniversary vhs tape. went ape over it. since then the whole album has become my personal favorite tull album

  • Couldn't have put it better myself - so I won't!!!

  • I had the opportunity to ride the tallest draft breed, the Percheron, on a trail ride. I expected each foot to hit the ground with tooth jarring thud, but he was smooth as silk! And what a vantage point for photography!

  • 4:00 to 5:35 moves me

  • Hello,

What is the song actually saying? I'm sur it has some deeper meaning. Thank you!

  • if i remember correctly it is about ian's dissapointment over the fact of how a certain kind of farming horse (cant remember the breed) was on the decline.

  • and its saying that we look at the horse as a vehicle. when a better one comes out we disband it. the tractor replaced the horse so no one cared about it thriving. ironically Ian believes this will come back to haunt us for we will run out of fuel for man made machine and turn back to our now declining work horses...

  • The lyrics are fantastic, but its his delivery of them that makes the whole experience so brilliant.

  • Thank you very much for this upload. Now I'm able to enjoy this track anywhere! I was lucky enough to see them live a couple of days ago, and it was life-changing! This is my favorite track, and I can't stop listening to it. The lyrics, the music and everything go so well together. Pure musical genious!

  • you speak from my heart, friend!!!

  • That sounds great, pal! I made some stuff of my own, although with a slightly different style. Check out my channel, if you feel like it. Rock on!

  • since i was 15 i love this band.ian anderson is really great.

  • It just doesn't get any better than this. Sheer genius.

  • i can´t get enough from it and i can´t make it loud enough.........

  • I have the same problem. It's never loud enough!

  • Thank you for this beautiful song!!!

    This vid is so great!!

    I love Jethro Tull <3

  • good boy... it iis sicker than any music to come in at least the next 3 years 2012 or not. here we go though, jethro tull,Gentle giant, Goblin, Yes, King Crimson, Saga, Camel, Van der Graaf Generator the prog and most powerful and purely progressive. we enjoy

  • and its ours to enjoy. :)

  • Stunning stuff, brought a tear to my eye.
