Jethro Tull is the most complete band i've ever heard. Ian Anderson has a wonderful voice and plays the flute with such a technique, Martin Barre is one of the greatest guitarists in the universe, Clive Bunker, and excelent drummer, and the rest of the band are just genious, you will be surprised and won't think the same as me because you only hear the typical music, Iron Maiden, U2, etc (great bands too), but you won't think the same of Jethro Tull, because they choosed to be less commercial
Almost all of Ian's lyrics are poetry set to music. He obviously is a great reader, his articulation is spot on, and has fun playing with juxtaposition of words and meanings...
I saw them live yesterday (16th july) for the 5th time in my life and I recommend to any who thinks to see them in the upcoming months to go and buy the tickets immediately, because Ian is better than the past years in my humble opinion. I saw them also in 2008 and 2007 to mention the most recent years, but that 2011 gig was the best among the recent ones, so go and see them!
I've always loved Tull - but for me this is their best ever song! The lyrics based on a poem called 'The Horses' by the Scotish poet Edwin Muir - I love John's bass playing on this track. Sucj a great band - their class shines through on every album.
There was never a band like Jethro Tull BEFORE they stepped on to the musical/pop/rock pantheon........and there has NEVER been a band like them still to this day in June 2011!!
This songs got the lot, fantastic lyrics, makes you visualize the entire song - (well it does me), time changes and a great tune - got to be their best song in my humble opinion.
@NaudaOfTheSilverHand Why like these two songs and the other ones not? I don't get it :D Anyway, everybody loves his father and mine doesn't even know J.T.
@TheFrickinPope at least your dad likes the same style of music. My dad can't even get into rock. And my boyfriend only "likes" too old for rock ' n roll...
So I am always alone listening and rocking to this great music. =(
This song literally squeeze the tears from my eyes. Especially since the fourth minute. I love this song just like the whole CD for the amazing atmosphere and a profound message contained in this text.
Brilliant lyrics; about something real, something other than love, lust or macho posturing...what a refreshing change. If you've ever had a chance to see a big draft horse up close, any breed, their magnificence will take your breath away.
@SabbraCadabra I'm from Poland. I know a man who for many years he was convinced that this is not band, only a single man and that his name is Jack Rothal. :-D I never was too bright.
amazing song. amazing lyrics, music, composition. what I like the most about Jethro Tull is that all of their songs are so well made in every aspect that it makes it hard to classify them in only a frame. there are so many excellent songs like heavy horses, witch's promise, bungle in the jungle, locomotive breath, living in the past, my god, hunting girl, bouree, thick as a brick...
My respect and admiration to Jethro Tull. Love your music!
@urielginat If you think these lyrics are good, you should see Jethro Tull's forty-minute song "Thick as a Brick" There's so much metaphor in that, I can't tell what the song is actually about! These two songs are my competed favorites.
Enjoy your country around you where ever it maybe, look for naural food that has major health benefits to you and is good for the earth. One day you will be too late, think on!!
what a powerful and symbollic piece of music. One day this will become true, people will realise how the past methods are reliable especially when the oil has become dry. Todays life has lost the traditions that made every country great. How we rely on modern methods and technology, pre-packed food and convience foods that are only made from chemicals. When was the last YOU took a drive or a walk in the countryside and look upon natures gifts to us.
@DrPlum i absolutely concur. people are so fragle and vulnerable who rely too much on the products of civilized society and the modern technology.
You asked about me, so i must answer.
I live around 100 m from a huge forest, and whenever i go to the city, i go trough it. So, basically i'm close to nature whether i want it or not. I enjoy it... mostly.
@DrPlum I love this forest, when i was a kid, my brother took care of me a lot. He is 15 years older than me, thats why. And he knew very well what to do to make me enjoy the time i spent with him, so he took me to the forest for long long walks.
@DrPlum Then when i was 9, i became a scout, and since then, i spent a lot of time close to the nature.
Nowadays, i'm a little bit busy, but still, i don't like being inside buildings, whenever i can, i go outside. And in the summer i sleep on the balcony. :) It is wonderful to wake up after breathing the sweet clear air all night.
So, thats how i live, however i'm not a horseman, but i totally feel the song's power. That's why this song is my personal favourite.
I was introduced to Jethro Tull thanks to one YouTuber by the name of AqualungGameReviews. Great music. This is one of the first Tull songs I heard, next to Aqualung, and while I barely know the lyrics, I like the melody of both of them.
This is one of my favorite Tull toons. I would also recommend Minstrel In The Gallery, Songs From The Wood, and Stormwatch as albums to check out. As for the eulogizing of the heavy horse, it is premature. Last summer I rode a Clydesdale and I have seen Percheron's and Shire Horses at local shows. While they may not pull plows, these wonderful animals are still very much with us. Check the internet and find a show in your area. Believe it or not I have seen Shire horses at dressage events.
Thanks for posting Nauda! I became a JT fan after the Aqualung Album was released. Saw them in Birmingham and Atlanta a few times in the late 70's. Thanks again, one of my favorite YouTube videos.
This isn't a song so much as a beautifully emotional euology to the the most wonderful animals and a time past. Mind you, the music's bloody good too. ;-)
@MaxDaMedic It is far to soon to give a euology to these great horses. In Saint Augustine Florida and Brookville Florida, Avalon East and Avalon west still still use Percherons and some Clydesdales for there carrage tours. More and more draft horses are finding a place in dressage and pleasure riding, there day is far from over.
@jevicci I didnt hear about that, but considering that Ian likes classical music and he based some songs on classical music, i say its possible. (Bouree, Pavane, We Five Kings, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Aqualung for example)
I have a bit of an odd request: I fell in love with this song when I heard it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I would like to find more songs that are like this. (Rock n' roll meets Irish balad) Does anybody have any recommendations of songs that are like this one that I might enjoy?
@groovinonfunk Check out some other Tull, of course. Also take a look at a newer band, Tempest. And, from the same period as Tull, Fairport Convention, whose album "Lief and Liege" is typically considered the seminal British folk-rock album.
thanks for posting this lyrics version. it´s one of my favourite songs ever. it was also my first album - i was 12 and totally blown away by i.a.´s amazing voice and their unusual musical style... the raw power of the heavy horses is very much palpable through the song.
They were ahead of their time though! What a brilliant band.. Sadly, they are getting old, but the spirit of their music will fortunately never die :) This is my favorite Jethro Tull song. Fortunately I got to see them last year, hehe.
good lyrical work - jethro tull is a great band and worth seeing in concert if they should tour again. i never heard this selection before but it is really good
I think this is Tull's best song. Opening up it's so delicate, it almost feels like it would break if you held it too tightly, but then it dives right in and sweeps you away. One of my favorite songs. Long live Tull!
i remember seeing the video of this song for the first time. i think (don't quote me on this or I'll deny the whole thing) it was on the 20th anniversary vhs tape. went ape over it. since then the whole album has become my personal favorite tull album
I had the opportunity to ride the tallest draft breed, the Percheron, on a trail ride. I expected each foot to hit the ground with tooth jarring thud, but he was smooth as silk! And what a vantage point for photography!
if i remember correctly it is about ian's dissapointment over the fact of how a certain kind of farming horse (cant remember the breed) was on the decline.
and its saying that we look at the horse as a vehicle. when a better one comes out we disband it. the tractor replaced the horse so no one cared about it thriving. ironically Ian believes this will come back to haunt us for we will run out of fuel for man made machine and turn back to our now declining work horses...

Thank you very much for this upload. Now I'm able to enjoy this track anywhere! I was lucky enough to see them live a couple of days ago, and it was life-changing! This is my favorite track, and I can't stop listening to it. The lyrics, the music and everything go so well together. Pure musical genious!
good boy... it iis sicker than any music to come in at least the next 3 years 2012 or not. here we go though, jethro tull,Gentle giant, Goblin, Yes, King Crimson, Saga, Camel, Van der Graaf Generator the prog and most powerful and purely progressive. we enjoy

I come from a family in which these horses were....family?
My grandfather was the "best teamster in the woods" when teamsters had teams of horses and a love and pride to be named teamster.
Love this tune.
My uncle, a singer of traditional tales, often from his schooner building greats and great greats... brings this one out if enough ale comes his way.
And does it justice, as he does all the old work and play songs of my ancestors. And it fits.

prog rock ruined it all, huh?

completely ruined it all... who wants INVENTIVE music?!?! Thumping bass is all you need!!! The more repetitive the better!!!

Well then they were ahead of their time if it sounds 80's since the song is from 1977

They were ahead of their time though! What a brilliant band.. Sadly, they are getting old, but the spirit of their music will fortunately never die :) This is my favorite Jethro Tull song. Fortunately I got to see them last year, hehe.

Another October comes and this song still touches me. Just like it has done for decades.
Some of you must be way younger than me, yet you like it. Which apparently means it is a real classic.
Thanks Nauda.

good lyrical work - jethro tull is a great band and worth seeing in concert if they should tour again. i never heard this selection before but it is really good

In my opinion, Ian's best work as a lyricist. Thanks for posting.

I think this is Tull's best song. Opening up it's so delicate, it almost feels like it would break if you held it too tightly, but then it dives right in and sweeps you away. One of my favorite songs. Long live Tull!

I had the opportunity to ride the tallest draft breed, the Percheron, on a trail ride. I expected each foot to hit the ground with tooth jarring thud, but he was smooth as silk! And what a vantage point for photography!

Hello,
What is the song actually saying? I'm sur it has some deeper meaning. Thank you!
SyrianeKT 2 years ago
if i remember correctly it is about ian's dissapointment over the fact of how a certain kind of farming horse (cant remember the breed) was on the decline.
yogaman1919 2 years ago
and its saying that we look at the horse as a vehicle. when a better one comes out we disband it. the tractor replaced the horse so no one cared about it thriving. ironically Ian believes this will come back to haunt us for we will run out of fuel for man made machine and turn back to our now declining work horses...

The lyrics are fantastic, but its his delivery of them that makes the whole experience so brilliant.

Thank you very much for this upload. Now I'm able to enjoy this track anywhere! I was lucky enough to see them live a couple of days ago, and it was life-changing! This is my favorite track, and I can't stop listening to it. The lyrics, the music and everything go so well together. Pure musical genious!
