i was on the test that tested these things for the company that designed the raven at ypg. this was before the military picked them up. it was a boring test. well i guess you could say it was training seals to use it.
Yeah, it is actually supposed to land like that. It is designed to absorb the impact and distribute it throughout by falling apart. Pretty genius actually. No runway needed and you have to dissemble it anyways, especially when Oscar Mike...
I'm an RC pilot and going to build my own UAV in a few months, but I hope I can let it land using a laser slope. If I let mine land like this it will be toast :p (wingspan at least 3.5meters)
that was a little high for autoland. come in low, into the wind, and with the bird about a foot or two off the ground, hit autoland.
we actually made skids from chemlights and taped them on the landing muffin, then bring it in like a normal plane on a paved road. even packed gravel. worked great, many landings without the camera even coming off.

The funny thing is that this plane costs the military $25k for 10KM. I can get out to 15 MILES for $1500.

@traderdmb
what are you using for ENCRYPTED data transmission and retrans capabilities at around 13,000 miles?
tapper45 11 months ago
@traderdmb But you cannot do it in Karbala

Wow, there are autopilots available for under $2k that can auto land far better than that. Overpriced piece of crap, lol.

With nearly 2000 hours flying the Raven and other small UAS, there's not a landing technique I haven't seen...better or for worse :)

@ErichF Hey Erich, I was wondering does the Raven have any autonomous controls? eg. can it fly hands off?

With 100x100m landing zone you can do much better automatically
