The drama of the scene is really enhanced by having the top and bottom of the image cropped even more than the already extremely rectangular 2:35 original aspect ratio had. It makes the acting so much more effective and emotional by having the top of her head cut off.

I agree! I haven't seen "Monster" so I don't know how Charlize Theron did, but for now my vote for the Best Actress Oscar for 2003 should go the amazing and unforgetable performance of Keisha Castle-Hughes in "Whale Rider!"
